UMS Evolution Radial Care and Operation

The latest UMS gas radial 5&7&9 cylinder engines released on the market last year are now sold under the UMS brand. They redesigned the pushrods to have a deeper capture to prevent throwing a rod as tolerances slightly change during break in. The cam followers are now heat treated to reduce wear. The cylinder heads are machined from a solid billet of aircraft grade aluminum. All engines are shipped with exhaust collector rings installed. The electronic ignition systems are high quality components and designed in collaboration with RcExcell and CH Ignitions.
These new engines are certainly a welcomed improvement over the previous models of several years ago. They range from 55cc through 260cc offering a wider range of options to fit many more model plane sizes. I own one and it runs beautifully!

Will to you kindly give more detail on your experience ongoing with the brand? I would like to maybe pick one up used when they start showing up. My next new motor will be a Moki 180, but that's a ways out.
The 55 would be nice for fifth scale bipes. I mounted my Evo 77 on a GP Military PT-17 test bed today. ( Sirius FR-300 down for parts). Sheech not another story, I digress.
The AUW of 12.5 pounds plus motor 6.5 with ring on the Sirius flew it sprite with a 20/10. The 77 will be a little heavy on power and mass. The new 55 would be a great fit on my 1/5 bipe test beds. ( GP Super Stearman, same as the PT -17. 12.5 pound AUW.)
Thanks for chiming in Clock Guy.

I would think a 55 would be more than adequate for a 1/4 bipe....but maybe the wrong diameter to look right on some models.
I run a Seidel 7-70 on my 1/4 Fleet bipe and it's perfect combo..overall a bit heavy but OK.

I have a really nice busa neupirt 28 to hang radial power on the bench
Was planning on the Evo for it cause it's true quarter scaled but very light.
Threw the Evo to the pt-17 quick just to get up again. So in the interim.
That old German patina Seidel would sure look good on the French bipe!
wouldn't have to be an everyday flyer....
Although it should have a rotary.....
Oh No

Has anyone mounted the 5 cyl 180cc in a warbird? I'm building a Meister Scale P-47 and this "seems" to be an option. Havent taken any measurements of my cowl just yet but wondering if anyone else has. From what I looked up, it is an inch larger in diameter as compared to the Moki 180. I have been looking for flight videos, reviews of the 180 but havent seen anything yet. If anyone has any video or info it would be greatly appreciated.

UMS 9-115 Ziroli 87” Stearman
Does anyone know of a modeler using this combination?
this Ziroli Stearman is commonly built at a flying weight of 35#. The UMS has an output of 7.6 hp, swings a 24/10 at 6000 rpm to produce 12.5 kg/ 27.6# of thrust, and weighs 7.7#.
the diameter is 10.2”.
i would be most interested in flying in a scale manner. Having more power than needed could be handy but I would most likely be flying about at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. I don’t want the plane/ engine combo to look ridiculous.
Do you fellows think it would be too much for this plane?

The Ziroli is a bit more “portly” than the Flair
I have read that the Flair kit could be built as lightly as 25#. I will be following the Ziroli plan very closely. There will be very little modification unless I build it as a Super. It would look better this way with a 9 as far as scale goes but it would be a little under powered for the weight.
I should just build it out as a Super in the colors I would choose if I had my own.
that way it would look right but appear to be flown by a timid Super owner lol.
i cannot afford an alternative power plant unless I went with the 5 cyl 125. It would definitely improve performance but I would rather not have the 5. I wouldn’t cowl it. Maybe a “Townsend” (sp) ring.
oh! I could end up with the 5.
I can build out the wings and tail before I commit anyway. Even cover and paint them. I have been out of the hobby a very long while.
either way, they are pretty toys. “ But honey! I must have a radial for this project. It just won’t work out any other way! We will get through this together like we always have. Come, sit down with me. We can push the BUY BUY button together”.
Thank you guys. The finish on your Flair kit looks great!

The point I was trying to make is Old Bill’s Stearman is 10lbs + another 7lbs including engine = 17lbs heavier than your Flair. Your 77cc glow engine flies your 25lb plane just fine, however Old Bill intends to use a gas radial so he needs a larger engine due to the fact it is gas powered, and his plane will weigh in at 43lbs including engine and fuel.

How to check ignition unit 7RU ?
I have a 7-160 evolution engine that will not run. I think I have an issue with the ignition Type 7RU, as I can not see a spark when turning the engine by hand.
How can I check the ignition unit ?
thanks

The safest approach is to contact Adrian at CH Ignitions who is an expert on these ignitions, and the factory authorized dealer. I would do this to prevent accidental damage to your ignition which would void your warranty.

Anybody remember the thread section pertaining to carb replacement/upgrade on the glow 770s?
#2547
Didnt want to bug you.
I was thinking of trying a different carb on the Seidel 770. Can't identify it's stock carb. Hoping to find a direct fit to it's intake.

Thanks Tom
As always
I was poking around and found the stock carb for the OS Sirius available. It would be a direct fit if the invert diameter is correct. Trying to get that data from HH. I don't have access to machine tools and my Sirius fr300 runs so sweet with it's oem carb. I am hoping the new design will be as good as the previous, even better.
And will not need adaptation to mount on the old German Beauty.
