RE: UMS Evolution Radial Care and Operation
Orion 09 your Corsair looks very cool, and the engine sounds real good, I would like to know how you uploaded your video? I have some of my 9-99 video on my computer but can`t seem to upload on RCU, anyway I just test flew a friends EMS smaller Corsair, yesterday he has a Gas banger on it, a 2.4 first place engine with a biela 18x10 3 blade and it looks real nice and flies just fabulous, I was surprised How well the EMS electric retracts worked, very slow but looked good and flew better than I thought, just waiting to get my Corsair out, maybe tomorrow? -Steve

For all you corsair lovers, there is on youtube a truly inspiring movie on the corsair presented by a gentleman I met at an airshow. He was a pleasure to talk to and he acknowledged what a privilege it is to fly one. The video is vought f4u corsair.mov That will be motivating for us radial guys. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I have. -Tom

Thanks slskn. You have to upload the video to a video sharing website like dailymotion, vimeo or youtube. Then copy the link here.Glad to hear the Corsair flies well.I like to see that 9 cylinder. As for the gear,Troy Built sells upgrade boards which cut cycle time from 42 sec. to about 10 sec.Going to install mine this weekend.Has anyone gotten head temps? After a good run on the bench Ive gotten just over 200 deg.F .22x12 prop.

the Corsair is 36 1/2lbs. ( it was 35lbs. with the saito 450 in it), it has the air Robart retracts which work fine, but you are right there is some weight to that cowl, I will have to recheck the balance before the first flight.
but, as to the electric retracts, I was referring to is my friends EMS Corsair that I test flew had the electric retracts in it, EMS has a newer version upgrade to their retracts and you can preset the speed and cycle time as to which gear comes up first etc. my friends Corsair gear was so slow you could retire before they came up, anyway they worked great.-Steve

Looks and sounds great Steve. One thing I noticed in your last video was your rudder looked a little sloppy with the rpm up.Watch that flutter. Also like the silhouett of the plane on your trailer.Could you tell me where you got it?

Hello Orion09
yea, the rudder has a little play in it, we never had a flutter problem before, but does not mean it won`t happen, I will take a better look before it goes up I have more loose ends to tie up before the maiden, the graphics on the trailer is from www.kirbysgraphics.com they will cut and size which ever one you want, also check out Fritz Dezings/werk77 USA, [email protected], he has the airplane silhouetts, I have the Corsair on the back of my Truck window, looks cool!!-Steve

To Pete Bergstrom; On the Everything Radial Engines Thread someone posted a picture of the latest ad showing all 5 Evo radials. How about making a 36x24" poster for 5-10$ for us to put up in our workshops? I will take two! -Tom

well here is the maiden on the Ziroli Corsair (very poor video from my 13 year old) but, is the first flight on a very windy day 15 Gusting to 20 MPH winds, and right down the runway, not a good day to test but doing it while I had the time. a lot was edited out to skip the mostly sky, next time I will get a better video. I was surprized, had more power than I thought, fly`s faster than it did with the Saito 450 3 cyl. and with much more authority, again 93ins. wing 36 lbs. 24x12x2 xoar prop at between 5,500 and 5,700 RPM, robart air retracts, and was very pleased with the performance, I am walking on cloud 9 again. -Steve

Hey Steve,
The video is not that bad. Your son did well with the pictures. Flight was impressive, thanks for sharing. You guys just keep getting me more excited about my own Evo 7-77. I'm still looking for the right plane but I may have it figured out soon.

RE: UMS Evolution Radial Care and Operation
Here's what I have settled on. Ordered from Hobby - Lobby and they shipped it the next day. An excellent ARF. If anyone gets one let me know as I have some items worth talking about. The UMS 7-77 fit great. Only a small modification to the cowl and it goes right on. I still have some mounting changes for the engine plus fuel setup, radio's etc. and she's ready to go.
The engine is pretty well broke in and the valves adjusted. I just have a question that I'm sure someone can answer - when I removed the glow plugs I noticed that some had the washer seal on them and some not - which is correct and does it matter? - Thanks
Plus I noticed in the first picture the engine looks as if it is pointing down some. It is!! I only had the two bottom standoffs installed and it was sagging. That will change.
