Hey Tom,

Thanks so much for sharing your valuable experience. Can you describe the process for removing the valve lifter follower? Does one have to readjust the valves each time they add after run oil?

Thanks,

Roger

Roger, Very sorry to take so long to reply but I did not see the post. Removing a lifter is done by simply compressing a rocker that is not "on a cam" then remove the push rod and with your fingers just pull out the follower. Thats it!

To all; Last sat evening I took the Robin Hood with the 9-90 (which I now call "Old Reliable") out to the field and flew it 9 times! Some observations.........
1) The fuel cost for these engines is just not really a consideration. OK a gallon of Wild Cat fuel with 16% oil and 15% nitro costs about $18/gal and an additional gal of methanol is $4/ gal so 2 gal costs $22.00. Now with a 20oz tank (but not run empty totally for each flight) I flew nine times for about 10-12 minutes each and used just over 1/2 gal. Now that is a bunch of flying for about $6.00. Remember this is evo's biggest glow engine! No I was not at full throttle all the time but who is???
2) The events happening in the engine after the end of the session. Many of you have read about my 9-90 getting "crunchy" overnight regardless of using much after run oil the previous day. Well last evening i did my usual oiling with the engine still pretty warm and then I thought hey remove a bottom follower and catch the oil and inspect using a white bottle cap I had. The oil was full of water globules! So, I added more oil until it ran clear. Then I did the usual cleaning of the plane and went home. While driving home I thought Hot engine cooling down to 70F=more condensation. So At home I pulled the bottom follower again and yep! more water globules. So I oiled even more till the oil drained clear. This morning the engine turned over slicker than ever. So do we have to jump through this many hoops??? I propose at the end of flying wait till the engine is cold, drain the oil from the bottom, add some fresh oil like usual till running clear, replace both followers top and bottom and hope this does it. Followers and push rods are easily removed even from most cowls. I will report on the effectiveness of this procedure. This engine now has 70 flights on it and shows no wear or other troubles. -Tom

Hello Tom
I just got three more flights on the Corsair this weekend and still have a problem of the two bottom cyl. filling up the glo plugs, so after each flight I pull the plugs out and blow the oil out relight them before I put them back in and after putting them back in I get great performance out of the engine , however I am still using the 9 1/2 % oil yet and have a gallon and a half of this fuel left and then I will switch over to the right fuel of 7 1/2%, but the after run oil I am putting in is as you suggested earlier in this thread, and I am still having a smooth feel of the rotation on the bearings so, so far so good, engine is running still pretty strong and am thinking of adjusting the valves soon, but will try your method of the flow through on the after run oil and see if there is any moisture, seems to start even better by hand what a great engine so far.-Steve

Hey Steve. You could cut the last 1.5 gal. of fuel with some methanol to bring the oil percentage down.Dont ask me to do the math.Got a sillouete of the Mustang and Corsair from the link you provided.Very nice, thanks. Pete

Lars, Nice to have you back! Sorry for the loss of your field. I have lost three over the last 30 years. How many flights are on your Stearman? -Tom

Hello radial engine lovers, Question, I just reset the valves on the engine went very smooth, and now went from a 24x12x2 blade @ 5,400 to 5,500 rpm (Corsair flies very good with that combo), to a 22x10x3 blade and it is turning 5,900 to 6,000 rpm on the ground, so am kind of worried about over revving in the air since the manuel says max rpm at 6,300? cause it will unload in the air, maybe ritchen it up a little? or possibly a 12 pitch or what? still has real good pull with the 3 blade! just asking?-Steve

Steve, That is the size prop on my 7-70 powered corsair so yes, too small! I bet a 22 x12 would still be small. 24x10 3 blade would be OK but I prefer more pitch. Not to sound silly because I bet they do not make them would be a 23x12. -Tom

What Tom said^^^

When jumping from 2 to 3 blades or back its normal to change ONE of the prop factors but not BOTH.

IE: from the 24x12 to the 22x10......you lowered BOTH dimensions. Normally you would only change ONE in order to keep your engine RPM in the same basic range and to maintain your PLF (prop load factor) say a 24x10 or a 22x12 (x3)

Still waiting for my Microsens on board glow system and LiPo battery. The glow system is in customs at New York and I don't know where the LiPo is as yet. I ordered an XOAR 22x10 three blade prop from Valley View. Now I need to talk to Tru Turn about a prop hub for this baby. The prop hub will probably be the next thing I order.

thats what I thought, I have a 24x10x4 blade and that one is too much only got 3,600 rpms out of it, and the 23x14x4 is also too much, I will probably try and find a 23x12x3 or try a 24x10x3, I really like the looks of the 3 blade, TBM models has sent me a email saying they have come up with the Biela prop size for the 9-99 in the 4 blade and they say a 20x10x4, but that sounds too small to me,but I will keep experimenting til I get the 3 blade I want,-Steve

I received my XOAR 22x10 three blade WWII prop today. The Microsens on board glow system is now in California and it should arrive within the next few days. I should be able to start assembling the Corsair in about two weeks.

The Microsens on board glow system arrived today. The glow system LiPo battery is in route and the Tru Turn prop hub has been ordered. I hope to have this engine running in just a few weeks now.

Someone at our LHS is installing a Evolution (UMS) radial engine on their big RC plane. He has a Keleo exhaust setup on it too.
The engine sure does look good too.

Yeah starting a year or two ago, they setup a area in the back of the store where some folks get to build up their planes at.
I think the plane is a Hangar 9 Suikoi SU-26MM giant scale size plane too.

I started assembling a plane for my EVO 7-77 today - I can't hardly wait to hear that engine run for the first time. I received my prop hub from Tru Turn the other day and I may have ordered it a bit small. I ordered an 1-1/4 hub and it appears that the 1-1/2" hub may have been a better choice. What size prop hubs are some of you folks running on the 7-77 engines?

Best wishes and good safe flying.

A 1 3/4 A style hub works nice with 22" props. The hub dia. is 2",same size as the prop hub on the flat. You will have to order an adapter kit #TT-0100-A for the 10x1mm prop shaft and get a 10/32 x 3/4" socket head. Pete
