Default evolution 61nx

Hi all. I just bought a big stick 60 and was looking at different engines and was wondering, does anyone know the horsepower rating on an evolution 61nx? I can't seem to find it. Thanks

I don't know of any honest hp numbers, but the engine should pull it around pretty good.

The NX is a modern ball bearing high power engine so it should pull it around just fine.

I'm curious because a 61 is the low end for this plane, and I was looking at an os 75 ax, until I saw this. I know the 75 is gong to be more power, but if this is even close power wise, for the price, and look of the engine, I would like to go with the evolution.

Of course the 75 will be more powerful. But not having flown the plane how can you judge how much is enough? It is a .60 size plane after all. It isnt like we are talking about trying to fly it with a .46.
Of course the general rule here is "too much is just about right"., "you can always throttle back" etc etc
I have bolted a lot of different engines on several of my planes to get a feel for them each and only you can be the judge of whats right for you.

Well the 60 NX engine is intended as a high performance upgrade for .45 to .50 size planes. It is basically a .52 that has been bored and stroked out to  a .60 displacement. It has a smaller crankcase size so it can easily replace .45 through .56 size engines. But it still turns regular 11x7 through 3x6 props good though.  So in answer to your question, Yes, the .60 NX would work OK flying the plane.  But since the engine weighs less than the regular sized .61 engines, you may need to add some more lead to the plane to get the CG to come out OK.

But a better choice would be the .61 NX engine. It is a little larger and heavier and would fit the plane better.

I have no doubt that the engine will fly the plane, however I have an os 91fx on my bigstick 60 with a 14x6 prop and it pulls the plane around well. If you want to go straight up vertical, the 75 to 91 would be better.

Evolution 2 stroke engines typically have a lot of power. They need A3 glowplugs.

Evolution .60 NX: There has been som reviews about this engine and reports say that the stock muffler is a real power killer, but the engine responds extremely well to the red Jett muffler and can then compete with the best of them (almost)

See the last post in this thread: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_91..._3/key_/tm.htm

The .61 NX is the older, heavier version of the .60 nx, it`s easy to mix them since the are almost named the same.

I`m really considering the .60 nx myself, 15200 rpm on APC 10-8 with the red Jett muffler is great. I wonder what it will do on APC 10-6 then?? The Jett .56 is said to turn that prop at 18000 rpm.

I would agree that the muffler is a power robber. The fix that I did was to cut the stinger off and JB weld a 3/8 piece of Brass tubing in the enlarged hole that i made. The engine now runs flawlessly.

I've had a couple Big Stik 60's and in my opinion the OS 75AX IS THE PERFECT ENGINE for this model. Run a APC 13X6 You'll be a happy guy.

MJD, I'm with you. I started this thread asking about the horsepower of an evolution 61nx, and somehow we got on the 60 nx. Oh and the 61nt is the older model, not the nx. Also, the 60 is a 46 case, bored and stroked pretty much. And, I've decided to go with the 61nx, if I don't like it, ill sell it at our yearly flea market, and buy an is 75. Thanks for all the info........I think

Buy what you like and have your own fun. It's a perfect engine if you like it.

You'll get a bunch of answers if you ask about horsepower - most of them along the lines that most published numbers should be ignored and the real answers lie in reports from the field that tell you how fast it will spin a particular prop. I agree with this premise, although generally the hp figures published are at a certain rpm, and based on the rpm and displacement I would at least consider that a clue about the engine's state of "tune". For example if a .60XYZ was listed at 3.25hp at 20,000 rpm, I wouldn't care about the 3.25 part but would infer that it is in a perky state of tuning and prefers smaller prop sizes. Whereas if the .60XYZ-2 was listed as 1.85hp at 12,000 rpm, I would infer that is designed for and would be happy with large shaft loads. Beyond that, I would search for real numbers for comparison.

He he he I didn`t realize that there are that many of the Evo`s in the .60 size category: .60nx .61nx and .61nt It`s kinda easy to order the wrong one if not carefull enough, I myself want the bored and stroked .60nx then (for smallish and fast planes)
Go with your choice and enjoy, it`s a hobby afterall[8D]

I use the 60NX for Control line work. Currently on a 63 inch 900 Sq in model. This is getting on the large size for a C/L model although weight is puny for R/C models at 66 oz dry. There is really no loss of power and in addition it is probably the most fuel efficient 60 that I have ever used. Doing the AMA pattern which is usually 6.40 minutes takes about 4.2 oz of fuel. Bear in mind that I'm also dragging 2-.018/66 foot lines around as parasitic drag and you can understand why I'm favorably impressed with this engine.

I have been flying the GP 60 size Stik with an OS65AX all last summer and since it was the smallest recommended engine I was not expecting much when I first flew it. (I bought it in a package deal ready to fly). The 65 pulled it with authority and while it did not have unlimited verticle it would go nearly out of sight. That said I think your 61 should do ok but I'm a firm believer in more is better when talking horsepower. A 75AX would be close to ideal on that plane IMHO. It doesn't hurt that the 65 is a miser on fuel too.

The OS 65, 75 and 95 AX engines are of the same case size. The 65 is the lightest at 25 ounces with muffler. The 65 is great for most 45-60 size planes as its a great running engine and I think it has more power than a Fox Eagle 60. The 75 has just a tad more power but weights more. The 95 has a bunch more power and is lighter than the 75.

So if you plan to get the 75 forget that an get the 95 you will be much more happy with it...

Yepp, ditto I have gone the .75 route myself (Tower .75) But I soon realised that once going past .60 size it`s better to jump up to the .91 engines. Almost identical weight as the 75`s but more power, I see no use for this "in between" size for myself and quicly sold off the Tower .75 in favour to my .91 FX, never regretted that[8D]

Ditto, ditto. But, depending on the plane, throttle management may be in order to hold it together.

My friend Bruce Fischer the owner of Brucercengines.com has tested a few Evolution glow engines and finds them quite acceptable.

Get the .61 nx and tell us how it performs on different props, I for one am curious about that[8D]
