Heh, I like the DA wings on your OS sticker, Ryan

I find it hard to believe that the LA out performed the FX. One thing about the FX though, it's a boat anchor. Love mine though.

I've got the following 60's:

-OS FX61
-Magnum 60 XL

The one that idles the better and lowest is the Magnum 61 xl, it has tons of power and transitions awesome, I run 15% nitro on it. you need to do a carefull break in on it. Mine took about an hour. I'm so happy with it.

Be carefull with MDS, I have two that are new....don't run good.

Come see my 65LA pull the Fun 50 around, and you'll see why I like it. Don't worry about the MAN review - the guy that did it needs to learn that 60 size engines like to swing better than an 11x6 APC prop. I feel comfortable in saying that every engine in the test was under propped and the results do not reflect reality.

He tested the engines on all sized props. The peak HP came from a dyno, not props.

Did you settle for the Thunder Tiger?
Have one in the drawer. Didn't really need it for anything, but just liked the look of it.
Don't worry, its day will come!
(the price was pretty good too )

Are u talking about the Magnum XL91A, pictured hereafter ?
It produces 2.1 HP.

Apparently, a second version also exists.

The TT61PRO produces 1.8 HP....

Please don't post engine specs without reading the fine print. The spec for the TT 61 is with muffler, the Magnum is without. I own an ASP RedHead .91 which weighs about that, but weighs much more than the TT spec with muffler, about 29 ounces as I recall.

Ok, revisited my post. How can I find the fine print , i.e. weigh w w/o muffler ?

in reply to has anyone had experience with the irvine 72, yes. this engine is a little heavy but extremely well made quantum has them for about 154 dollars I think and worth every penny. idles like a watch. runs excellent on low nitro. has great torque for those big props, and is just overall a really high quality engine. chrome cylinder too.

get the super tiger g90, use a bisson pitts muffler on it- side mount the engine. put an idle bar plug- i use fox long plugs. use 10% fuel.. it takes break in to get the idle to settle down, but this is one great engine. use an apc 14-6 prop- forget master airscrew.

the idle misture will need to be adjusted as it breaks in. give it plenty of cooling air. use 10% fuel with some castor so if you run it a tad lean at times it won't hurt the engine. set the high end so you get some smoke from the muffler at first. then when it warms up fully in the air after a couple minutes the engine will really come on strong. - especially on those strafing runs .

god luck with the warbird- which one do you have?

As far as warbirds are concerned, I only have a little P40 for a .25, but I plan building a larger one, for a .91 engine (Magnum) or a.72 (Irvine)... It will be a F4U Corsair or a FW190. With the latter, I may be sure the engine won't detract the scale appearance, thanks to the huge cowl. But with the F4u... I will have to build custom exhausts...

MDS .58 or MDS .68 if you can spare the weight. Both less than 100 bucks new and much cheaper online. All of mine run great and never gave me any problmes.

If you insist on an OS, I'd go with the LA .65.

If you can, try to find a used ST .61. I also like these engines. A new ring can cost 3-5 bucks and you can get a good deal on one. Make sure you buy one with good bearings, I don't care for replacing them. They will last almost forever.

Chinooker,

According to what I've seen here, I wouldn't dare putting an MDS into a quite detailed warbird... I believe u when u say yours are fine, but apparently many encounter problems... I would rather trust the .65 LA, with no problem, but I will no longer put my Euros in OS engines (I own a .20FP, a .46SF, a .91VRDF, all excellent engines, but things have changed...). Today, there ARE real alternative solutions. Let's take this opportunity to question OS superiority and to discover other brands ! My favourites are : Irvine .72, TT .61, Magnum .91. The latter would turn this warbird into a missile IMHO...

Strykass, there's nothing wrong with the MDS .58 or MDS .68. Pay for postage and I'll lend you a MDS .58 long enough for you to realize its a good engine. Its one of my favorite brands and I'll keep buying 'em cuz people are offloading them cheap.

Don't knock the engine unless you try it yourself. The same applies for other engines that are supposedly hard to tune. I have an ASP .91 readhead that supposedly could not be tuned and had a bad reputation. Other engines in same catetory were the Royal 46, Leo .46, ASP XL engines etc..etc... Never had a problem with any of them though you can find hundreds of complaints online.

Yes you're right, I may give them a try to judge them myself, but not on "touchy" aircraft.

Yard-dart is right on. For the money the Tower 61 is great. Also the 75 'for a few dollars more'. Just take your time breaking it in and you'll love it.

I have an O.S. .61FX and I love it. I would rather have gone with the .50SX only because it puts out 1/10 less hp and is alot less heavier. Ive used Magnum, MDS, K&B and even Dinamite for cars. Ive used a lot of different engines and I can honestly say, besides saito, OS is the only engine I will ever buy. Ive never had a problem with any of them...
