RE: Castor oil - A final word?
Hi!
Well I dont know...haven't tried it!
I only express my experience....and that is that the oils I mentioned are superior to castor ...sad to say ...as I love the smell of castor oil.
But no one over here in our club (130 members) are using it (castor) any more...and think its the same all over Europe. 10%-15% allsynthetic oil or less is what people use.
Regards!

In light of that rather surprising admission I find your adamant insistance as to its' inferiority even more, shall we say, surprising?

Jaka
I think if you go to this forum thread you will find that quite a few people in Europe are using castor oil and insisting on it.
The thread is on a German forum and discuses at lenght the same oils that are discussed here but with a lot more technical information and a lot less emotion.

RE: Castor oil - A final word?
Hi!
I try to be honest!
No I have not tried every oil on the market...but I do know that the French Motul "Micro" and the two German oils Aerosynt 2 and Aerosave synthetic oils work better in ordinary sport engines than Castor oil (Castrol M). And I suppose that Castrol M is like your Klotz (Castor oil).
I only refere to what I have seen and experienced myself.....no more! And I do know that over here in Sweden most flyer's use 15% or less synthetic of the above types.
The problem with Castor oil (and I suppose Klotz Castor) is that you will after avail have an engine that is black inside from carbon build-up! ....if you call that a problem..... because most engines run fine without you knowing that they are black inside....the problem is... I don't like my engines black inside! So when I tested the above oils ...I was amazed that they worked so good and that my engines ran so clean.
So.....have anyone of you tried the above synthetic oils...???
Regards!

Jaka, it would help your credibility in this discussion if you knew what you were talking about. Hint- Klotz is not castor.

i now use fuel with 20% klotz benol and see none of this carbon you speak of. my engines run very cool and can sit unrun for months without any after-run and never get "sticky".

....I'm sorry my friend.....no one has shown me one bit of proof, that synthetic
oil will out perform castor....
....in any way, shape, or form.
And I'm certainly not going to hold my breath untill someone does.

RE: Castor oil - A final word?
I guess we might as well keep this "final word" going
The only synthetic I've ever dared to use was Mobil Jet Oil 2 and I found the head temp was 10C higher than with straight Castrol M. However this was just a quick check and could have been caused by a slightly different tune or because I was using 18% synthetic compared to 20% castor.

Hi!
Fly-Boy !
well you should try the oils I mentioned (Motul"micro" etc !
Klotz benol ...isn't that just Castor oil .....or Klotz name for it......same as Castrol M??!!.
Or do you say that Castrol M is "crappy" and Klotz is better.......Think Castrol M has been used much in international racing...wouldn't they know beter than using such "crappy" oil.
Castrol M surely will give black carbon deposites in all engines I have seen.....both my own pylonracing engines and all sport engines I have.

RE: Castor oil - A final word?
Jaka, your dedication and devotion to Micro Motol is incredible. At the very least they should send you a case of their product.
Benol is just one Klotz product BTW, one you should give a try. Klotz also produces a variety of synthetics.

RE: Castor oil - A final word?
Jaka, by your own admission you have not tried the modern castor blends. Before you continue to denigrate these products about which you know nothing, why not try some? Despite your bias you may even find that, like so many thousands of modelers the world over, actually find you like them.
Why not give it a try, then report back?

RE: Castor oil - A final word?
This endless discussion becomes kind of boring.
On the one hand the Europeans do favour their products, on the other hand the same applies to the US/Canadian/Australian etc. pilots.
Well, I think it should be worth a try to send a gallon of each
1. Motul "micro"
2. AeroSynth 2
3. AeroSafe
to the US (maybe to one of the forum moderators)
BTW, Aerosynth2 and Aerosafe are the most popular oils here in Germany being the largest R/C market place in Europe.
http://www.aerosynth.de/pages/pdfs/ASynthEngl.pdf
http://www.aerosynth.de/pages/pdfs/ASaveEngl.pdf
This could be a job for JAKA since he's in model hobby business.
And of course JAKA should receive a gallon of
1. ? please make a recommendation
2. ? please make a recommendation
3. ? please make a recommendation
from the US.
What do you think, guys?
Personally, I don't want to miss the beneficial properties of both synth and castor oil. I practice it like those modellers treating their glow engines by far the hardest: the competition R/C marine pilots (ever listened to a MAC .84 or CMB .90 screaming at 27K ?)
Just mix synth/castor 60/40% and you'll have a great time

That seems to be the prevailing and certainly the most practical view.

the industry. I would use straight castor perhaps in a racing Nelson, but the
blends are the correct answer. I would not, however, use straight synthetic
oil in anything ....but perhaps a weed whacker.

RE: Castor oil - A final word?
I have 2 brands of USP castor oil where I live... CVS castor oil (generic) and Walgreens castor oil (generic).... they both say 100% castor oil.
If the ingredients on the USP castor oil say 100% castor oil.... would this mean there is no sugar?
