Default Saito 56 starting problems

Hi,

I've mounted my Saito 56 inverted and it won't start. When I give it some fuel directely into the carb opening ( not the normal inlet) it starts, but stops within a second or two.
This should be (based on my engine knowhow) a fuel feeding problem.
When I prime the engine according to the book there are fuel all the way to the carb inlet, but it won't start.

The only way I can start it ( but it won't for more than a second or two)is to give it some fuel directely into the carb opening

The engine has been in store for some years after breakin.

The high-speed needle valve is set 4 turns out. The low-speed is factory set.

What could be the problem? Any ideas?

rgs, Roar

It sounds like the spraybar in the carb has some gelled castor or similar in it.

Hi,

Just after sending my earlier email I rechecked the low-speed settings. It was completely closed!!!

I sure it will start after the low-speed neddle is turned out to normal position.

I just got a saito 56 and would like to know how or where I should start on the low end. I think yhe high end is ok. I tached it and ran it down 500 rpm from highest point,. Seems to sputter and die or needs alot a trim to stay running. Does a pinch test work on these?

A pinch test works as long as you don't cut off the fuel flow completely. That's because it doesn't have a crankcase load like a 2 stroke does. Pinch the line just enough to restrict fuel flow a little bit or it will die. Do you have the manual?

Brad,

Hobbsy just had shoulder surgery so I'll pass on how he explains tuning Saitos. Peak the high speed. Don't lean it back, leave it at peak rpms. The low speed adjustment is a process of leaning the low speed, and then checking by slowly advancing the throttle to check for a smooth transition. If it is smooth without wheezing, try advancing it faster. It is a good idea to turn and check in 1/8" increments. Also, it is good to go back and peak the hs needle periodically. You should be looking for the ls needle to be set around 1/16" to 1/8" rich from the point where it begins to not transition smoothly. Then, set your hs about 300 rpm rich. Test fly the engine around the field a couple of times and really listen to the engine.
