well I did remove them back when I put the engine together. I hay have mixed them-up,I'll look to see. but I will hate to admit LOL if I did because my eyes are getting worse.

my lathe is apart again. it's about the same part/Slide Nut but for the Compound Slide this time. the nut was made wrong 28 years ago, and they are still made wrong today for Grizzly lathes. so my Compound Feed screw has a lot of backlash in it. so I thought I would finely fix it.

the Nut #906 in the Pic should have a slot cut in it so the backlash in the threads can be removed. but no slot.
part #907 is named the "Adjusting Screw". it's pic looks as it should have the slot, but I have found a couple at Jet and they do not have a inside threads or the slot.
my plan is to make a new nut about 3mm longer and add the slot.
my other idea is to make a new Adjusting Screw and add inside threads.
either way all threads are right hand so no $100 fancy tool in needed.

Jim

OK, here's the skinny. the big stink. the big boo boo.
when I found that the Valve was leaking on that 91 I got from Capt, I bought some 91 gaskets off RCG. when the gaskets came they came with a new ring and a set of use, very low time rockers, but one rocker looked to be damaged from hitting it's valve tip in a crash, and that is the one I put on my engine. but to add, when you sold me that Cylinder I bought new rockers, so I put one new rocker and one used rocker on the engine. LOL
today the rockers I ordered popped up, so now I have an extra set. maybe I will just get some bearings and put that GK 100 together. if you remember way back, I was telling how this frozen GK100 I bought has a scratch in the liner I could feel with my finger.

Rebuilt Saito 56 2nd run, the first run did not go so well, it would not idle below 3,000 and full throttle was all,over the place, this run went perfectly. The spray bar had a sliver of Teflon tape in it.

Saito 56 with new RMJ ring, new Boca Bearings, new rocker arms.

Prop========HY, formerly Bolly Clubman 12 x 6, perfectly balanced
Fuel Wildcat 10% with 18% full synthetic
Exhaust======old style long muffler
Plug========Sonic Tronics 4C Special for Saito and Enya
Max rpm after 8 oz of fuel burn=====10,080
Idle==========================1,370, it would barely accelerate at this LS needle setting
Idle after retune,================1,770, rapid hiccup free acceleration at this setting.

This rpm was rock steady for a good 5 minutes.

Poor acceleration at this setting.

After rebuild, today's picture didn't take for some reason.

She is a good looking engine! I hope you can find a home for it on an airplane it deserves.

That darn Teflon tape has a way of going where it shoudn't!

Need some more test stands so all the engines can have a home.

Which Saito, that's a great looking plane.

The Saito 66 is almost too much engine for the LT 40, it takes full down to go full throttle. Speaking of full throttle, I fly with this guy he formed a company called Full Throttle RC they assemble and sell these planes as turn key planes. He delivers or they can be picked up. His house and business is near the north end of our flying field.Flat out crazy guys fly those. Between him and Frank Noll it's interesting place to fly.

You and Dave G would have made great friends!
Bet you have put quite a bit of methanol through that beauty, no needle changes? Sounds about right. Is this your third or fourth season on that one?

IIRC, it was already well trimmed at your first flight too!

Hobbsy, I used about 4 degrees of initial downthrust with the Saito 62 originally on my Kit Built LT-40. Helps tame that balooning as the throttle is advanced.

Strangely I can't say for sure. It has never given me a reason to remove the cowl and inspect it. From the day it was added to our family it has been the true example of if it ain't broke don't fix it. The exposed section appears to be a black knight. Size wise probably a 180 or maybe larger. It is so well baffled all you can see is the cylinder and pushrod tubes..it has never needed tappet adjustment and the muffler has never loosened up. It leaves great contrails with my home brew and uses copious amounts of it.
All good things have to end but hopefully not for a long time in the case of the Claude.
Maybe Gary has seen the magic under the cowl?

Cases of gallons of Heli 30% cut with fives of VP-1 and Klotz. All the surfaces have remained neutral since it's first flights by Brian and myself. I have only replaced the set of aileron servos as I caught one acting poorly on a routine pre flight inspection..
I wish I had met Dave Gary. Before his passing you asked me to stop in and meet him, didn't get that done in this life, bet I will in the next, in a land where we'll never grow old. His gracious widow is a testimony to the man he was while he was here. Good people. As are you my friend.

hey guys, I haveanother one of,,,, "those",,,, type stories for you, and I know you will enjoy reading it lol.

so I'm going to make a new "round slide nut" for my Compound Slide's Lead Screw. yeah, a round nut I call it. cause it's simply a bushing that is threaded inside. it has a half moon 3mm slot on one side of it for a Rolpin to hold it in place and to hold it from turning as the lead screw turns..

Ok, so I need a few tools. I ordered a drill, #10 drill for the threading. and a 3mm end mill for the rolpin slot. the end mill needs a 3/8 shank for my Sherline Mill.
keep in mind that the slot needs to be cut less than 2mm deep. about .060".

BTW, about 2 months ago I replaced the Gibs on the Sherline Mill and I replaced the Table, so it's cleaned up and tight, and slides smooth. ready to mill.

so when looking at 3mm end mills on-line I found 2 things,
1) many of the 3mm end mills had too small of a shank, so I could not use them.
2) the ones I could use with a 3/8 shank cost $27 and higher. well I didn't want to buy an expensive end mill cause I was only going to cut brass about .060" deeo, once.

well I found LOL, a $7 3mm end mill with a 3/8 shank and I thought,,,, "Emmm,,, what's $7, I'll bite",, so I ordered it LOL.

I got the order yesterday. so last night I test mounted the end mill in my Sherline Mill and the shank has a loos fit in the head stock. so I got out my trusty new Calipers. and I found the shank was under sized .004". so I got out my new standard size end mills and checked their shanks, and all 7 of them were .001" under sized so they fit the Mill's Head Stock. 3/8.

keep in mind,
1mm= .0394".
3mm= .1187". EDET> very-very close to .119".

OK, so I bit for the Chinese $7 end mill and I got it, and it may over cut the 3mm slot by .004 because it's shank is offset .002" as it's mounted in the Mill's Head Stock.. but I want the slot tight so I wont have play in the slide as I adjust the Lead Screw.

so for a test. I re mounted the end mill in the Sherline's head stock and milled a hole in some brass. I measured the hole and it's,,,,,,, .119". yeeaa baby.

too add, the hole in the Base Plate for the Rolpin is also .119".

so knowing the shank is under sized .004" and off set in the Head stock by .002", it should cut the hole over size by .004", but it doesn't. so LOL are the fluts under size, LOL, so it cuts an all most prefect hole, LOL I don't care LOL, I love my new $7 Chinese made End Mill LOL.

BTW, a few months ago I ran out of Cutting Inserts for the lathe. they are for a 1/2" holder. the ones I had were Swiss made, I paid around $50 for 10, that was 27 years ago. today the sames ones are about $24 each. well I saw some Chinese made inserts on Amazon. a 10 pack for $12, their revues were great. so I bit, what's $12. and bought a pack. I broke one, but they cut fantastic. I even cut drill rod, cut it clean at .025". that's a good cut depth for a small lathe cutting drill rod.

thats my story, and I'm sticking to it like glue and a 1 inch OD bolt threw it.
finely, the end.
Jim

I was checking on prices for a Saito FA 40-a this AM, I checked MacGregor's first thinking they'd have the better price, not so.
Mac's======274.96 pound Sterling===348.01 USD
Horizon=====259.99 USD
I don't think I messed up in the way I looked.

Looks like the exchange rate between Pounds Sterling and Yen is working against the Mac's option!

I bought a brand new one on eBay in the box never been mounted a few weeks ago.
Offered the fellow $175 shipped and he accepted. He even included a new aluminum mount and a Du Bro spinner.

Found a lot of good deals on eBay over the years.
Just a few years ago I would often get some great prices on five gallon cans of nitromethane (Torco Brand).

I wasn't busting Mac's for it, the finances are just more than a little upside down right now, hopefully they'll improve. I have an FA 30-s crankcase back ordered from them and is still 33 USD.

An interesting plane from OSMW, a great ride for a Saito 50,56 or 62. I'd probably mount an FA 40-a. The drop box could be fun for candy drops etc. I've got enough going right now, I have started covering the Minuette and the Mambo.

Gary, I hope you don't recommend me for the looney bin, I paid $249.00 shipped for this FA 30-s a few weeks ago, but as Handsome Harry Clay said," I gotter boy".

notice where the breather barb is, right where I moved/mounted mine on my sliver 100, but opposite side. mine is on the same side as the 100 twin. I have to wonder how much time Saito takes to research where is the best place to mount it.

As long as it is somewhere between the front and rearward bearings
