Brewer,

Why are you running just a straight pipe? Just curious.

It is what was on the engine when I bought it. Do you think I should put a muffler on it?

Did you see my post on what happened when I restricted the pipe?

J, is that a stock Saito pipe, all the stock Saito straight pipes I have here have the ends crimped a little, since it will draw fuel well at part throttle but not at full throttle more or less says it is lack of tank pressure. My guess is that if you open the throttle slowly it doesn't quit.

It is better when I slowly open the throttle but will still die within seconds. It will run the tank out at half throttle or idle. As I said a few post up, restricting keeps it running at full throttle. It just seems like somrthing is wrong if I have to restrict the pipe. I am just not sure about the stock pipe part as this is what was on it when I bought it.

Thanks forr all of the help!

Brewerjk,

Putting a muffler on it may resolve your problems. If you like the pipe, work it out and fly it. I bet it is loud!

Yes it is loud! Sounds really good though. I think I may be close. I have it now where it runs really good from top to bottom. Turning 9960 RPM's w/15x4W. Should do pretty good on the harrier 90. If the weather holds I may get to fly it this afternoon and really give it the true test.

I have run the needle in and out and no effect. I am running the engine inverted and the fuel tank is set right. I have a straight pipe on it and was wondering if I need more pressure from the pipe at full throttle.
brewerjk, there might be a blockage somewhere in fuel system serving to make the needle valve useless. Is it possible to try it with the muffler and normal tank pressure?

No muffler = no back pressure = lean and no fuel pressure. Just like the family car, if ya just remove the muffler, it will run lean due to the lack of back pressure. Saito has matched their muffles to their carbs and visa versa...

I’m running a SAITO .82 inverted in a World Manufacturer 1/5 scale clipped-wing Cub. The high-speed needle valve is difficult to reach for adjustment because it is covered by the cowling. I would like to extend the needle valve out the side of the cowling. Is there an extension available for this needle valve?
Thanks

Rick

I make extensions with a piece of music wire or left over pushrod wire

Just find a piece of piano wire that fits in the hole and bend the end at a 90, like an allen wrench.

Squeeze the pipe with heavy pliers a bit at a time till you get what you want. I have had 4 srokes that required muffler pressure because without that the rich HS setting due to no pressure would make the low end too rich. With muffler pressure (which reduces at low throttle) things were OK.

I noticed in the saito manual that saito recommends a 14X6 prop for the 65, 72, 80, 82, 91 and 100. I don't think I would use this size on a 100 or 65. Anyone care to comment on this?

The 12x6 is the benchmark prop for the 65 I believe. Thats what I run... I run an 11x7 on my 56, and a 13x6 on my 72.

I have been using a 13-6 APC on my 65. It turns fast enough.

The APC pull even harder... I think im turning 10,200 wide open, tied down, with my 65 and the 12x6. I have it on a 46 size Decathlon. (flying pig) My 72 is on a 40 size Super Stearman with a 13x6, and it's just right ! I only use Master Airscrew props.
Give me a 40 size biplane, over power the heck out of it, and im happy... lol

It's been three years since I used the 65 but I remember it turning the APC 13-6 at 10,000 even on 15% Rich's brew fuel.

I don't necessarily dislike MAS props, I have some. I just have more APC's.

That is exactly what I did. Pinched the end just enough for it to run good at full throttle. I dressed it up with a muffler deflector and it runs great.

I run a APC 14x8 on my 1.00's and the peak is about 9600 on CoolPower 15%.

I'll have a go with a 13x6 on the 65 and see how it does the next time I take it out. I know my 72 screams with one, but it's on a 40 size Stearman.

Can anyone tell me the total weight (with standard casted muffler) for the Saito 150 and the Saito 180? Horizon doesn't show the muffler weight. Many thanks!

rajul,

The stock 1.80 muffler, header pipe, and jam nuts weighs about 3 oz.

Jim, thanks for the info. Is this the machined (old version) or casted muffler (new version)? Do the 150 and 180 use the same muffler?
