Sorry it's 15% Omega, and it may be worth mentioning that I'm at altitude. I did cut about 1/2 inch off the prop tips before it was balanced so it's a 13.5ish prop.

I have torn my Saito 45 down to replace the bearings. I noticed a difference between the cam lobes. One lobe comes to a fairly sharp peak while the other has a less peaky profile, more rounded. The exhaust lobe has the peakier profile. I would guess the in valve would be held near it's full open point longer than the exhaust valve.
The lobes have a nice wear pattern, no visible smearing or streaking like a flat cam in a auto engine. Nothing abnormal looking about the lifters either. Before the bearings started getting noisy, the engine was making good power and running great. Is this normal, I'm assuming so. I have seen many other cams for auto's, motorbikes, small engines, but have never seen such a visible difference between ex and in lobes.
Any ideas why this is so? Thanks, MikeB

I just got a my first saito, a 100. The manual states that the low speed needle needs to be flush with the throttle arm, but it goes in about .5mm, is this correct or should I make it flush with the throttle arm?
Also, somone messed with high speed needle, can anyone tell me how to get it back to the factory setting for break in? I'm using a 14x4 K-Series for break-in, sound right to you guys?

leave the low speed needle where it is? The initial setting for a brand new Saito 100 is flush with the throttle arm. But after you get the engine broken in, this setting is way too rich. You well need to turn it in to a point about .5 mm below being flush.
Try your High speed needle at about 3 1/2 turns in the beginning. This will be rich enough to get it started You can re adjust it after it's running.
I use a 14-8 regular prop on my 100's It might over speed with a 14-4? Make sure you are not turning over 11,000 on the ground with a wide open throttle
Saito's like to start at about 1/4 throttle. They are difficult to get going at wide open throttle

As for the prop, it's only for break in on the ground and not for flying, thanks for the help.
By the way what afterun oil are you guys using? And how frequently do you use it?

I’m trying to get from the test stand to the air for a break in. I want to run it at max RPM – 1,000. How do you find the max RPM? Mine drops about 600 RPM in a couple of seconds after full throttle. Start is 8.800 then it drops to 8,200. Is max 8,800?
If so then how do I set the -1,000? Should I set it at so it runs at 7,800 after the drop?
I hope this makes sense.

"screw it in fully", be sure that you understand, just when it just barely touches and seems to stop. never tighten it, it will wear the surfaces. break in should be a ligther prop than you would fly with. instead of 14x8, maybe 14x6, keeping it rich, so that it doesn't over rev., keep below 10k at all times.

I usually peak them with the needle valve and then back off a couple hundred rpm. I do this by ear. But I've been doing it for 55 years too. Maybe if you had someone at the field do this for you or even use their tachometer to set it up, you could learn what to listen for and what it sounds like?

i went to the website listed, i submitted a question. i want to order ceramic bearings for my saito 1.00, .82, .72, os 70 surpass II, os 55ax. it lists a sealed front bearing for saito, os was something different. i wanted to ask what each meant. and i found no listing for 55ax. i have gotten no answer. i called the number, it is not in service.
anyone have any idea?

Saito engines blow oil out the front bearing unless you use a 2RS type front bearing (Rubber Sealed). You can use a shield bearing up front instead but it will be a little messy. I have one with the shielded bearing and it has run for years with the same bearings.
the OS engines seal of the front of the crankshaft is supposed to be a function of the fit between the crankshaft and the crankcase so they do not need the rubber sealed bearing. People usually use a ZZ (shielded) on these.

I want more 40 size planes, so I can use more 56's, I just love those little engine's. I have an 80, but I need to put the kit in the carb. It's going to replace a Magnum 70 that I have on a Super Skybolt that it came with. Just not quite enough power, and the Magnum although fairly new, so im told, hardly has any compression, and won't idle Saito slow. YUK !

Hello,
I'm new to the RC hobby, new to this site. Actually I don't own a thing yet, but my Dad is involved in the hobby and I am learning. Recently I purchased a used Saito engine for a birthday gift for dad off of Ebay. The discription was not even close to what it looked like when I received the engine, it was more scuffed up and beat up than expected. My major concern is this, I mounted the engine to a bench and placed an indicator on the prop shaft or crank and I could measure .0085" TIR. Is that too much?
