Default RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

I'm off ot a swap meeet at the weekend, hope to pick up a bargin or 2 ! A question to all in club Saito land. I run my 65 on 10% nitro an OS F plug and an APC 12 x 6 prop max RPM is about 9700 (peak rpm), fuel consumption is about 10 oz at F/T in 10 min. Valve timing seems ok ant tappet adjustment is ok. is this normal for this engine? also I dont see many references to the 65 in this forum, why? is this the black sheep of the Saito family? PS the engine has an "O" stamped on the mtg lug. PPS Keep up the good work great source of Saito info.

Garry:

With various tweaks you should be able to cut the fuel rate of your FA-65 by about 40% With an intake stack and a Bru-Line fine mesh air filter it should run around 0.6 - 0.7 ounces per minute at full throttle, usiing 15% nitro.

You don't see a lot of FA-65s because they are the oldest design still in priduction, and they are ABC enginies. This makes them also just about the heaviest of the mid block engines. The FA-100, an AAC engine, weighs only 1/2 ounce more. The FA-82, as an example, is three ounces lighter than the FA-65.

But the 65 is still a good engine, and a very smooth runner.

Thanks Bill. I presume from your reply that the rpm is about what I can expect, Am I right in my assumption?

Hello

I have been watching all the beautiful saitos for years now.
Finally i desaided to get my own saito. I have not started it yet, will do this weekend.
I look forward to test this beauty(Saito 100).
Can you give me some advise on which fuel to use?
The fuel i can get her is Byron,Jero, and Mrf.
I put an os f on it and apc 15*4w.

Garry:

You're doing fine for an FA-65. If you want more you can install the later cam, maybe 800-1000 rpm more.
-----------------------------
hestvikauto:

The 15x4 prop is a littlebit light for the FA-100, when you fly be very careful not to overspeed the engine. A 15x6 or 16x4 woulold be safer.

The engine will run on fuel as low as 5% nitro, but it's not really happy with less than 15%. Also, be sure there's an amount of castor oil in the fuel. If it's all synthetic add 4 ounces per gallon.

Finally, you're in Club Saito as number 195.

Bill.

Hey Hest!
I am sure others will tell you which of the available fuels is best.
I too have a 1.00.
I run it on a UCD 60.
It seems to like the 15 X 6 best.
I've only tried the Zinger and the APC.
Both performed fine.
A 15 X 4 would be a little underproped for my application.
I recommend following the instructions for breakin that came with the engine.
I've been out of the hobby for 20 years and came back this summer.
In my previous life I had three 4 strokes of another brand.
Never could get reliable idles and had a lot of dead sticks.
The Saito has been dead reliable and (knock on wood) never quit in the air.
Good luck!

Throttle response is great with the 15 X 6.
Wooden prop theoretically better than heavier "plastic" props.

I have herd some to claim the SA100 is really a 110. Is there any truth to this?

I'm looking at getting a Saito 45 for a smaller plane, or they as smooth as a 65 or larger? I have an X brand 40 and it vibrates terribly , I'm afraid it's gonna shake my glue joints apart

I don't have the bore and stroke of that engine, but if you do you can calculate it yourself. BORE X BORE X STROKE X .7854 = DISPLACEMENT.

[size=2][/size Bill , i am mounting a saito 125 on a Hangar nine 1/4 scale 100inch cub. Have any ideas on what a good prop size would work. I will be using wildcat 30 heli fuel as i do on my saitos. I was thinking a 16/8 apc or similar prop??

I run a 15x4 on my 100 and it's just perfect for the lightweight (5.25lbs) profile 3D ship it's in. Spool-up is almost instant and there's thrust to burn.

The engine will run on fuel as low as 5% nitro, but it's not really happy with less than 15%. Also, be sure there's an amount of castor oil in the fuel. If it's all synthetic add 4 ounces per gallon.
I'm using 10% nitro in my engine (which may be why a 15x4 is perfect) and it runs just fine. After a gallon of fuel I've been able to lean out the needles and it idles like a top -- but is still a bit of a jack-hammer at anything over 1/2 throttle - but that's a fact of life when mounting a big four-stroke in a very light airframe.

STG:

The Horizon listing says the FA-100 is a 1.10, but running the (also listed) 1.14 bore and rthe 1.02 stroke gives me a total of 1.04 ccid. Your results may vary, but not much.

Bill.

Yep!
Mine varied by .0011173cid...
I got 1.0411173.
One thing I didn't know was that the value of Pi had changed to .7854

Bas:

Sorry, skipped right over your question. To keep the air speed down I'd try a 16x6, but for looks on that plane I would also be tempted to try an 18x4 wood prop.

A problem with the 4" pitch is that at 10K rpm the air speed is only going to be 30 mph or so. If that is OK then try it, but if too slow dont evne buy the prop.

Larry, if you really mean an older .45 it is a very smooth engine, turning a Graupner 12x5 at the rpm you see.

Hey W, you got to be known by what you're known for, Dial-Gauge would work. How about "Caliper" and if John Denver were alive he could write a song about you. That .45 I think deserves a new flat bottom winged something or other.

Just to get back to in-general Saito appreciation for a moment....

My new Saito 1.50 arrived today. I bought it from Chief Aircraft. I could have had the 1.80 for the same price, but I didn't really need the extra cubes and would rather have the better fuel economy of the 1.50.

Anyway, it's the first new Saito I've purchased in a few years. I was impressed with the very nice white box with gold lettering and the white foam padded interior. It looked like a piece of fine jewelry in there. [&:]

It looks so nice, I'm going to bring it to work tomorrow to show my friends! Sad part is, none of them are into R/C at all and will just look at it, ask how much it costs, stare at me for a minute, then walk away shaking their heads. Maybe I won't bring it....

I know YOU guys would like it.

Good flying,
desmobob
