Cool; lesson learned for me about the 5% nitro.

I will once I get the radio installed, programmed and CG balanced. I'm bummed out that the plane needs 1.5 lbs of weight added to the nose (it's a Great Planes Giant Big Stick). I guess that shows how much a Saito is lighter than a gas engine.

Put this 1.82 on it and you may get away with just placing the battery up beside the tank. This with twin TurboHeaders would sound awesome.

I have a 182. It is a nice easy running engine.

Here in OZ it is easy to get all the components to mix glo fuel (nitro, methanol and oil both castor and synthetic and if you are good looking and have a silver tongue you can also buy ether to make diesel fuel.
It is considerably cheaper "to mix your own" glo fuel and given the cost of carf fuel (ULP)  (unleaded petrol).
I mix or get mixed (by my mate) all my fuels (diesel and glo) on an as needs basis so as it is fresh when used.
Re old farts post methinks he might have been sniffing some Bundy Happy juice (rum to the others in this world)

You've managed to get ether? I haven't, AFAIK it's a controlled substance as the druggies use it to make speed or something.

Don't even get me started on asking for amyl nitrate.

Yep in commercial quantities, you have to plug into the O/T network, and for amyl nitrate use IPN or diesel improve (as in trucks).  We also can get syringes etc to measure quantity of fuel going into tanks for Texaco.

No problem, I still haven't started the engine yet. I am working on the radio installation and then will work on rebalancing the CG. After all that, I will run the engine and see where to go from there: 5% nitro, 15% nitro, convert to gas....who knows. My MOOD might change by then. The long, cold Michigan winter will come soon and things change[&o].

The nitro % will not change the sound other than higher will add a few rpm, not enough to be worth it in my opinion.

When adjusting the valve on these mills, do you want a slight drag on the feeleer gauge like you do in full size engines or to you want the feeler gauge to slip freely? Ijust adjusted the valves in the 3 saitos i have and did them with a slight drag on the feeler gauge and just want to make sure i did it right. thanks

I would concur in that a slight drag is good when setting the valve gaps.

I guess the best to to explain it is to have a bit of feel in the guage when sliding it in and out perpendicular. A bit of grab is too tight, and feeling almost nothing is a bit too open.

Low compression, modern revisions of Saito four-strokes are sluggards in throttling and top end power without 20% or more nitromethane in the fuel.

This is one of the few subjects on which Hobbsy and I disagree. Then again, I suspect that he flies around at 1/4 to half throttle most of the time anyway, so he probably wouldn't notice the difference in engine performance using lower nitro fuels.

Ive run them on 15 and 30 and find no appreciable power increase...
May just be my style of flying.

More nitro? Forget that, you really want a roots supercharger on those low compression Saito engines. Except for a few exceptions, all my 4 stroke engines run perfectly fine off of 5% nitro fuel. All of my Saito engines that I have and have had work fine on 5% nitro fuel. Granted I have only used a couple of new FA-40A engines on my twin engine plane, all the rest are older designs.
