"virchlich" sounds like "wirklich" in german, what translates almost to "OS are truthly not to bad" or something (*grin*).

"Veleicht" schould be vieleicht what is like "maybe".

I don't like OS engines, for me they don't have a face or personality...if you know what I mean.

Regards,

Holm

"Perhaps Webra was the best. Enya is very good too."

I think. Certainly makes sense to me!

Yes Holm, Deutche is not my first language....so we're even LOL! Ja ja Wirklich is what I meant (really..in English), also vieleicht ..which means maybe (I was close on spelling there).

What I intended to say was (and for all who now wonder): O.S. are really not that bad. Maybe Webra were the best. Enya is very good also. I like them.

Well, I thought I'd have a little fun with German with Holm....hope nobody minded? Thanks for the corrections Holm!

Nothing to thank, I understood what you meant and it was funny too :-)

Iv'e don't see it that often that a natural english speaker tries to write something in german, I really know
that my english is not the best also, no wonder, never learned that language (really)..

I don't even have a Webra, think OS is ok, but it is something like mainstream, Evryone has one.
Enya's are fascinating me in a way that I can't describe...

I think I'll buy a Webra some time, just to have one.

Kind Regards,

Holm

(It's 1:08 PM now, coming from a friend (neighbor), had some beers....)

The Enya 60 & 80-4C engines are among my favorite engines ever made. Yes, there are lighter engines. Yes, there are smaller .60 & .80 (actually a .74) size engines. There may even be more powerful non supercharged engines in the size ranges mentioned, but none possess the magic of these two engines. I own the Saito, OS, Sanye, Thunder Tiger and HP equivalents, and none are quite like the Enya .60 & .80-4C engines. A 13x6 is a terrific sport prop for both sizes of this engine. These engines will also be perfectly happy swinging a 14x6 +-, or a 15x4 +-.

I'm a technical kind of guy. When I buy an engine that is sold as an .80, I want it to actually be an .80, not something else. Is that too much to ask?

Ed Cregger
Ed my math shows that it is a 12.6cc (0.76 cid) engine, so by rounding convention it is an 80. Besides the prop has no concept of displacement. All it cares about is torque and RPM. The Enya has these in spades.

All the best,
Konrad

I did the math manually, using a pipefitters guidebook for formulas that utilized bore and stroke to find the volume of a cylinder. I stand by my calculation. And that is too much to round off anyway, as far as I'm concerned. The difference between a Class B and Class C engine can be approximately the same amount that you are willing to dismiss.

Math is FUN.
Also done manually
Ï€*R^2*L
Ï€=3.14159
R=2.7/2=1.35cm
R^2=1.82258cm^2
L=2.2cm
3.14159 *1.82258 * 2.2 = 12.5962cc (0.768 cid)
Rounding to significant digit displacement = 12.60cc

I know of no engine that is advertised at its true displacement. Most rule books give an upper limit. So if I wanted to use a true 6cc displacement engine in say FAI F3D pylon that would have been fine as long as I wasn't over the 6.5cc limit set by the rule book. So if building to a rule measure the displacement don't follow the nomenclature on the engine.

What bothered me was that the OS FS-20 was actually a huge 3.563cc (0.217 Cid) engine. (I think they did this because they thought the market for the engine was actually looking for a cute small engine not a large power house, Gee marketing!)
While the HP Vt-21 was a true 3.463 cc engine (0.211 cid) engine. Really the smaller engine even though the name is larger than the OS's. One company was much more honest to the actual size with their nomenclature!

All the best
Konrad

I just use Pi x the radius squared x stroke x number of cylinders (where applicable )

I get .7686628 cu. in. (close enough? )

Is there a way to get this site to recognize Unicode characters such as F070 for Pi?
Are the servers this site is using Unix based?

I have an Enya .60 two stroke that I bought in the late 60's and put it in a Royal Products P-51 Mustang that I built. At that time I had to put together the kit of the Royal 70 RC radio system. Came in kit form and had to hand build all the servos, rec, retract switch and trans. Sent it back to Royal in Colorado for alignment and adjustments. Worked great. The P-51 has aileron, rudder, elevator, flaps, throttle and retract gear. Flew it twice and it has been hanging on my wall every since. I still love my Enya.

If we a writing code another way to come up with the displacement of a cylinder is as follows
Bore^2*stroke*.7854

I have and old SS40 that I would not get rid of for anything! It has never failed me and just keeps on going. LOL seems like the engine keeps outlasting the planes! The only thing I don't like is finding the perfect airplane for it anymore. It is hard to find the older style .35-.40 size kits or ARF's. The best plane I ever had it on was an old Airtronics Warlock kit. If there was a better supply chain in the USA, I would definitely be a buyer!

Blindsides, I love my SS40BB! It is in a Sig Kavalier. I also have a Sig Four-Star 40. Both are excellent platforms for your beloved engine! Go to the Sig website and by a kit! I love that they are still around, provide great parts...particularly balsa and finishing materials, and old school sport RC models at a cheap price. That's the ticket. I am not a Sig employee BTW, or friend thereof (and LOL), I just love the older simple hobby..and plenty of fun with their easy to build kits (the way it was meant to be). I like building, but even those that don't could learn a little about our hobby as it used to be. That is seeing something that you built proudly take to the air and return unharmed! Good luck!

P.S. You did mention: "If there was a better supply chain in the USA, I would definitely be a buyer! I have given your answer (Sig), so no more excuses!

I'M trying to say that there is ZERO reason to get all pissy about CC's or Strokes, or who knows what all. After just a bit over 45 Years in this Hobby, I see no reason to be concerned with the bits. I enjoy this Sport / Hobby and find it difficult to understand why anyone would get twisted out of sorts over Numbers / Brand Names / etc. For me, this is still an enjpyable Hobby and I've more various and sundry Engines than most. They are all pleasing to me for reasons of their own.

G'day

I'd second the Four Star 40 as a place to put an SS40. I have two of them and recently I was flying my Sig Kadet LT-40 with the SS40. It flew it really well.

I have just added a pre-loved Enya CX-50 to the stable. It came from eBay. I wrote to Ken Enya and got some new bolts and bearings for it and I also put the crank case and head in the Crock Pot for a couple of hours. Looks like new now and has plenty of compression.

My Enya Stable now is SS40 x 2, Enya 53 4c, Enya CX-45 and growing. I think I am looking for a good 15 next.

Steve, I doubt anyone intended to take the fun out of it for you. Modelling draws a technical type crowd often (including me). You really shouldn't worry so much. Your point is fine though...all us smart people on these threads do like to jab a bit. Consider it fun sport as long as it isn't personal (didn't seem like it was). I used to race motocross, and all their machines were not exactly 125, 250, or 500 cc's! So what! I agree with you. -Eric
