how many engines
#2
is there such a thing? On my pylon stuff I usually have 2 engine per plane both fully broke in and ready to change at a moments notice. otherwise I don't think you can have to many.
#3
I have about 15 engines. 5 or 6 glow engines and the rest are gassers.
There are guys in this hobby who have litterally HUNDREDS of engines. I think a lot of those guys who have that many engines would be considered collectors at that point. Still yet, there are guys who have 30 or 40 engines in their inventory that they swap from plane too plane and use regularly.
Too many engines? No such thing. Thats like asking a woman if she has too many shoes, or too many bras.

2 x Gas Turbines (Wren MW54's)
8 Gassers ranging from a G26 to a DA200
25 x 4 Stroke Glow (Saito & Magnum)
20 x 2 stroke Glow - (OS, Evolution, Supertigre, MDS, Jett & Webra)
6 x Electrics
All get run regularly and 42 of them are mounted in planes that are fully equipped with all radio gear and servos and are flown regularly.
All spread across 3 countries (Good excuse to buy lots and lots of them.
And it's still cheaper to maintain than the wifes 22 Horses, but I don't complain about them because the empty paddocks make a great flying site.
So in total - 2 Turbines, 8, Gassers, 45 Glow and 6 electrics.
But the President of my Home club can beat me hands down, He has at least 75 Glow and 25 Electric - not sure if he still has his gassers though

OK... I'm just alittle outclassed here... I've got 9 glow engines...8 of which are in flyable airframes. The other is having a break after having taken a ... um... dirt dive.
I think is probably a variation on the, "How many is too many airplanes?, question so I'll answer it that way. You have too many engines when you have one more than the minimum amount required to for each airplane in your fleet plus spares plus engines for any future builds you have planned.
That pretty much leaves it wide open doesn't it?

I really don't know. If you count the engines in my collection of 1960's and older (pre-WWII) I have over 500. I collect OS engines too and have about 100 of them.Srarted with OS 4 cycles when I was stationed in Japan. My first engine was an OK Cub 049X that came on a Jim Walker Firebaby C/L airplane. Still have it.

Hello; I have just enough engines, until I see something I like, then I need one more. My wife understands. When I was a windsurfer, I had to have 8 of them and at least 12 sails. When I was into motorcycles ( still am) I had to have at least 5, One alone would never do. How much is too much? I don't know. I know how much is enough, but that's a moving target. I try to avoid counting how many engines are sitting on the shelf, the thinking is that I'll have enough parts for my running engines, no matter how many I crash.

Here, let me be a chauvanist for a minute: ask her how many dresses / pairs of shoes / colors of lipstick / pairs of slacks are too many, and see what she says! Or if she has a hobby, unlike mine, nail her on that instead...
I think you have figured out by now there is no such thing as too many. Mind you, if you had 73 $6.99 Cox .049's, I might change my tune.
Lessee.. I know I don't have enough, but off the top of my head.. this is an intersting exercise, never itemized the list before. Sure to make some mistakes here, but:
1 Gasparin G-6 CO2
1 Gasparin G-10 CO2
1 Gasparin G-24 CO2
1 Gasparin G-300 CO2
6 new style TD .010
2 original NIB TD .010
2 original TD .010, runners
2 PeeWee .020
1 TD .020
1 Pfeffer .036 RC diesel
Countless Cox .049's of various sorts, estimate 20
9-10 antique 1/2A's
2 VA .049 MkI
1 Va .049 R/C
2 Norvel .061
1 MK17 .09 diesel
1 Enya CX-11
1 OS FP .15
1 Cox Conquest .15 FAI
2 Medallion .15
1 AD 15 FAI
1 Old ST. 15 speed
1 KMD .15 team race diesel
1 McCoy RedHead .19
2 McCoy RedHead .35
1 Picco .40
1 Irvine .40 diesel
1 OS .46FX
3 MDS .40 (pre US distribution)
1 Sport Jett .50
1 West Euro .50V1
1 OS .61
1 MDS .61 FIRE (pre US distribution)
1 Merco .61
1 Mutunuc .61
1 Saito .72
1 Fox .74
1 ancient, anemic ST2000
1 Doylejet pulsejet (same dimensions a Dynajet)
Assorted small electrics
Hmm.. around 80. Now I see the problem. If I ever told that number to my wife.... egads! [X(] However it's obvious many of these are just collectibles.

Okay, how much is it going to cost me to keep this under wraps?..
Actually I was surprised at the number, I must root through the boxes to confirm. Likely I'll find what I missed and be more aghast. Jeez, if I had all that money now in one hand.. the engines I could buy. No! What am I saying? [sm=bananahead.gif]

We have over 200 plus boxes of spare parts. Why sell them? They don't eat any hay, easy to store and they don't get cheaper with time. I could fire any one of them up at any time. No need to try describing an old engine when you can get one out and run it. We have given away a few but I don't recall selling any. Don't have to worry about anyone finding out since what's his is mine and what's mine is .....MINE!

I am lightweight compared to you guys. In 2 strokes I have a .25,.36, 2 .46s, 2 .90s and one 4 stroke 91 plus one electric.
8 in total. Thats plenty for me I cant see buying any more anytime soon without selling or trading something of what I have.

Lets look at my Dad. He has 24 airplanes that are ready to fly at any time. That means at least 24 engines. Well 22 engines and 2 motors. He has several others because, as an examlpe, he doesn't have an airplane for 45 right now but there is always the possiblity. Same with his three hundred twin. The airplane was destroyed but as he has had two there is always a chance he might build another. He got it when it sold for half of what it sells for now. Just because one doesn't have a use for an engine right now doesn't mean one should get rid of it. Also collectors never have enough engines.

A friend had 110 complete glow engines a few weeks back. He keeps a list of inventory in a notebook. He also has countless partial engines and salvaged parts.

I have maybe a dozen that aren't in planes. I enjoy all aspects of the hobby: building, flying, and collecting. If anyone gave me grief about the money I've spent, I tell them it's cheaper than a couple visits to a therapist, and I've got something to show for it when it's all said and done. When I go flying, it cost me me a few bucks in fuel (OK, unless I crash, which aint too often, thank God). This hobby is very satisfying, and relatively cheap in comparison to others. If it brings you joy, and doesn't interfere with paying the bills, go for it!

Boy ain't that the truth.
My brother raises tropical fish. He has one that cost about 500 bucks and you KNOW it's going to die. All it does is eat goldfish. What a thrill. Gimme a model airplane anyday.

One of my problems is I like building computers too.
I've got 2 computers now. I use this one upstairs in the living room for most general surfing, email, and RCU.
The one downstairs is hooked up to my DSL modem so that while I'm building or assembling, I can run over to the computer and get on Tower Hobbies' website to add items to my wishlist as I need them. I used to make paper lists and then run upstairs to this computer--log onto Tower and then add items to my wish list. I would always loose the lists, or forget to add something. Then I'd place my order to Tower and remember what I forgot after the order was already shipped. So, I'd be screwed and be missing a part or a pushrod. [:@] I HAD to have a computer in the shop. HAD TO.
Now, with that computer downstairs so convenient, I just go to Tower and add stuff to my wish list. It has saved me time and helped me to not forget things I need.
I want to build a computer for my 5yr old daughters bedroom, so she can play her Disney games on it. No need for internet. But, I'm having trouble comvincing my wife that a 5yr old needs her own computer. [:-] She likes to play Disney games, but the software isn't always that great, and it causes glitches in the operating system on the computer eventually. I don't want her playing the games on either of the other rigs, because they have important stuff saved on the hard drives, and when the operating system gets screwed up from the crappy Disney software, I have to format the hard drives and reboot the operating system. That wipes the hard drives out. So, it's not convenient to have her Disney games loaded on either of the 2 rigs I have now. She really needs her own computer. Really she does.
Not to hijack the thread. How many is too many? How many pairs of shoes does one woman need? How many bras does she need? How many different shades of lipstick? It's all relative, I guess.

I know a guy at a club not far from me who has 300!! And he has 50 flying models.
His wife thinks it's excessive, but she's a most unreasonable woman.
