Default pitts muffler problem

I purchased a Bisson Pitts style muffler for my Evolution 1.00 engine. Once the engine was mounted I went to install the muffler.
The muffler hits the engine mount just enough that I cannot tighten it down.
Is there a spacer available that will go between the engine and muffler flanges?
If not, any ideas?

Depending upon what material your motor mount is made of, and how much material you would need to remove, you can simply grind away some of the mount until the muffler will fit. Great Planes actually suggests this in the manual for one of their ARFs that I built. That mount was made from a plastic-like material so it would have been easy to grind it.

Obviously, you would not want to make the mount too thin or it could fail. Also, make all your cuts with a large radius because cracks will tend to start at a sharp edge or corner.

I've had this problem in the past with my Super Skybolt but I used a metal mount. I'm a bit apprehensive about grinding the plastic mount.
I think I'll have to make an aluminum spacer from some scrap landing gear I have laying around.

Thanks

Tom,
Been there done that, the black plastic mounts are a glass filled composite, I had to grind mine big time when putting a Pitts on my ST G90, should be no problem[8D]

Go ahead and grind it. Make a nice rounded cut away that is just large enough so the muffler is no longer hitting the motor mount and can be tightened. Won't hurt a thing. I've done it several times in the past.

Thanks guys:
I made up a spacer from some old landing gear (from a crashed Morris hobbies Balsa Nova ARF) I had laying around. Gotta love a DREMEL.
Turned out great. I now have about a 2mm space between the muffler and engine mount.
Your suggestions of grinding for clearance would probably have worked out without compromising the integrity of the mount, but i feel better .
It also gave me more clearance for the throttle pushrod.
All this work going into my new CMPro 75.5" Corsair.
The cool thing is the entire engine and muffler will fit into the cowl with only the exhaust stacks exiting the bottom which I will probably cut off flush with the cowl in case of nose over!!
It just IRKS me to no end that a muffler DESIGNED for this application would not fit properly in regards to engine mounts. They do realize that a 1.00 engine would require a wider mount than a .40 DON"T they?????
Now I have to enter another post about Evolution Engines.
Happy Flying!!!!!!!!
