I always said that I would never own an MDS engine too, after reading so much bad about them, but I now have an MDS .48 that came on a built and well used Sig 4*40. The owner assured me that it ran very well. I haven't ran it yet, so I don't truly know, but I think I saw this model flying at a club event once and remarked that whatever was powering it sure did wail. It was probably the same engine.
When turning the prop back and forth between compression, it feels as smooth as a Rossi. It even looks a little like one too.

OS does NOT paint their engines except for the blue LA series. The Gold and Blue heads were anodized. None of the FP series were painted. All natural aluminum.

Hi Ed
Isn't it funny, I've never had a problem with the OS40 FP. I've had two, both bought second-hand and both ran well. One had a slight castor stain on the cylinder. In an attempt to soften the oil prior to cleaning I put the engine in the oven. I then forgot about it. When I took the engine out of the oven, the oil had gone but so had all of the silver paint which OS use to paint their engines! Yet it still ran well.

It is my understanding they have painted several models with silver paint. Mostly low budget models.

I have a friend of mine that I hope doesn't read this. I am just about all Enya and have never owned a Fox but there are some folks VERY loyal to Fox.

RE: worst engine ever
I went flying with a friend who was using a very old Fox .35 on a CL plane. He doesn't attend to after run oil and only runs the engine dry and drains the tank when he puts it away. It hadn't been run for one year. He primed the engine and it strted on two flips. I recently attempted to start a new Cox (Estes) .049 Sure Start and it took me two hours to get it to start. If I owned a Fox .35 I would not take ten .049s in a swap.

Well, I'm not a big OS fan but I have heard nothing but positve things about the LA series of engines. They are nicely priced also.

RE: worst engine ever
I have tested a lot of .46 size engines against the OS46LA and everybody else makes better power.
I have to believe the statement that "one of the best .25 size engines is an OS .40LA".

The Fox 35 is closer to an LA 25 in power and weight. IMO its not comprable even to a .35 of that era, it was made for slow speed torque and a good 424 break.

All of my 1/2A's are a piece of cake to start, no different than any other engine if you feed them right. My .010's generally start in 2 or 3 flips of the spring starter. In two hours you could strip and rebuild about 11 Surestarts and have time for tea. What took two hours.. what was the problem after all that?

RE: worst engine ever
Once I got it started it ran pretty well. I was using Sig 25% nitro fuel. The engine was an Estes/Cox Sure Start. One of those $11.95 auction site wonders. I suspect that the piston/cylinder fit was loose and as nearly all of the Estes engines, had a very loose small end con rod fit. I threw in the towel and gave up on my second new Estes wonder. Loose piston fit I can't fix, loose con rod I can. I have an old 1959 Cox .049 and a new never run Texaco. I suspect that since these are genuine Cox engines they should run very well. Someday I'll fire one of them up just to see how well they do run. I don't recall my 1960 Cox P-40 being such a nightmare. Are your engines Cox or Estes? I'd advise you to be careful buying the Sure Starts. I really don't care anymore because I have all Enyas now.

Bill

RE: worst engine ever
Worst engine ever huh? I would say the Thunder Tiger Pro .46.
Oh wait I got that mixed up. Thats the best engine I ever used! Worst engien I have ever had was an old K&B .20 that I got from a friend for free. It never really ran right but I think that had more to do with its age. The few times I got it to run good, it was a beast of a little motor. I got tired of messing with it though and sold it. Kinda wished I kept it now. Probably a little love and it would have ran alright.

I don't think the Fox will turn faster than 10,000.
I loved them back in the 60's though

Back during the past summer I ran several Fox .35s and McCoy .35 Red heads on the same old-style Top-Flite 10-6 prop to see if any would have an advantage for Foxacoy competition. With 5% nitro, 28% castor all of them averaged around 10,200.

I don't have an interest in the Fox .35 but thanks for the heads up.

Actually - I do own one Fox 35 because I believe every C/L flier should have at least one Fox in his engine box. It'll probably end up in a Bi-Slob - a plane in which any engine other than a slobbering rich Fox 35 would be sacrilege. I own a McCoy redhead 35 for the same reason - it is a piece of our C/L heritage.
On the other hand, if I were to build a serious classic stunt ship for competition purposes (way beyond my current flying skills), the only period appropriate engine I would even consider using would be the model 5224 Enya 35-III.
As far as "worst engine" experiences go, by far the worst I have ever owned was a Cox babe bee .049. I'm not saying they are junk 'though - just temperamental when something isn't quite right. A good running Cox .049 is a real pleasure - right now I have two .049 powered control liners (one with a TD, the other a Black Widow) which are great fun and easy to handle.
cheers,
Colin

RE: worst engine ever
I stumbled across a Babe Bee 049 for $3.49 in fall of '57. It was certainly a lot more friendly than the other engines that size back in those days.
I remember about 1962 the neighbor kid was buying them for 50 cents and a quarter from other kids at school. He had a paper sack full. He flew control line too but was about 6 yrs younger than me.
