Ah - nope.

Just the link posted - the vid didn't embed at all.

Will see if I can figure it out...

Ahhh.... if you "Go Advanced"... then click the "Insert Video" icon and paste the video link that way, it seems to work.

No aftermarket pipes, just what comes with the engine, plus a couple of O.S. pipes that replaced fractured originals.

Cool video Bob, thanks for posting. I like the B&W footage at the beginning, looks very authentic.

Watch out for those skydiver's!

We actually had one come down in the area where we fly. He had expired before he hit the ground. I believe he had a heart attack on the way down.

Hi Rev

I'm interested in the matter since I'm a happy owner of a new Laser 300v. So time to star testing some props, such as Menz 20x8 (which is Jon's favourite with the 300v) and APC 20x8. Apc is faster but i don't know which of these two pulls better. I guess I just need to acquire them both and test it..

But ok this is going to be off topic so let's get back to the ASP 400 theme..Thank you Rev

one of the main reasons I like the menz is because they are less than half the price of an APC and I am a cheapskate

Oh... so you're not running a collector ring then?

Just straight out exhaust headers?

Anyone ever tried to make their own crankshaft?

A bit off-topic re the ASP 400 - but I scored a half-decent ME 109 and would like to put a multi-cylinder (4 or 6) inline in it.

Kolm's just cost to much... so I have this idea in my head to use ASP 'spares' (top end - cylinder/sleeve/head + valves etc) and maybe turn up a crank and Mill an Ali engine block blah blah blah.

Too hard maybe?

BJ - it all depends what material you hope to use for the crank and what machines/services you have available. We have had people use Laser parts to make flat twins, V4's and V6's. Also a few radials have been done with our parts.

In any event I wouldn't fancy running a crank that wasn't hardened, then you need to do some grinding as well to get the bearing fits all nice. It can be done for sure, but plan it carefully before spending any cash

Default First flights

Hello,

as proposed and requested I post some pics and a vid from the first flights of my Gee Bee R3. The engine has around 2.5 l through and runs quite fine so far. No problems with hydraulic lock of the bottom cylinder of the rotated engine, but has some difficulties running on all five pots. Starts easily and I am happy so far. Here are the pics:

As you can see I designed a new, fully damped landing gear, which already proved to be worthwhile. No jumps on touchdown. And here is the video. I am no expert in video editing, so please forgive if it looks awful:

Good remark, Jon! Another thing is Menz has a wider selection of different size / pitch combos. Like 20x7 which is a bit special size, for instance

Ho-lee crap!

Is that a stock ASP 400 you've got in that?

What a magnificent deep, rich sound

Mine sounds rather pissy on the test stand with just the standard staight exhaust headers.

Must be the ring muffler? Keleo I'm guessing?

That thing sounds (and looks) absolutely killer, mate

Thanks BJ. Yup, it is a stock engine from HK with Keleo ring, but the exhaust is to the right and not the bottom. Maybe this adds to that sound. I am really happy with that. Before getting it into the air I experimented with a second stage, large volume muffler in order to get the high frequencies out, but now there seems to be nothing to change. And yeah, going WOT most of the time is really fun (and a must for a racer )

PS: Maybe also the quite low RPM helps too. With the 22x8 and around 6500 it doesn't create that much high frequencies.

EQ1, thanks for posting the photos and video.

Your installation is superb. Very clean and professional looking.

May I ask who makes the glow driver you are using?

The video is excellent and I have added it to my ASP400 collection on Youtube.

Thanks Tom. The glow driver is home-brewed. I originally did it for my Evo 999 and downsized it to five cyls. It uses a 3S LiPo and cuts down the voltage using PWM from the Arduino Nano. Because I prefer to have full access to my equipment I also wrote the software for it. One can connect the throttle channel in parallel and set a throttle point by a potentiometer from where the glow driver kicks out and additionally switch it on/off via the TX. If I have new ideas I can add them as I like. The board is also selfmade. The glow driver is able to fire the five plugs around 70 minutes uninterupted with a small 2500 mAh battery. It is comparatively large, but I did not want to go and use SMTs. If anyone is interested I can provide the schematic, board layout and program.

Cheers,
Olaf

Good job Olaf ! I would be interested in your schematic + board & layout

I suppose the parts are readily available in a electronic supply store ? Do you have an idea of the total cost ?
Thanks, Vasek

You can put me down for the details of how to make the glow-driver too, Olaf.

From what I've been reading, some of the commercial ones can be a bit flimsy and hit-an-miss at times - so something genuinely reliable would be a bonus

Danke.

BJ
