RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
This is from the OS specs.
"REQUIRES: Fuel: Aircraft blend 5-10% nitro content with 8-10% lubricant
content (it is suggested to dilute commercially available 15%
nitromethane and 18% lubricant fuel with methanol half and half to
make a 7.5% nitro and 9% lubricant fuel"
Quote"In A Alpha 4 stroke you would use say 18% oil in the fuel. During combustion a very small amount of oily fuel isis injected past the ring as well past the ring gap. This minuscule amount of oil , but at say 7000rpm, the amount builds up rapidly and this is the sole lube for the engine below the piston.
obviosly quite adequate supply for your Alpha ( any other 4 stroke)is not blowing up due to lack of lube. Ok then, one cly supplies enough oil for one engine so....here we have 7 cly's all carrying out the same lubrication deal. NOW it is easy to understand why 8% to10% oil contentis quite adequate and you will see the proofof this when you note the efflux of oil from the breather nipple." End Quote.
Make sense to me...

Ok Guys what fuel mix are you running?? More so the oil content?
just supprised on how much of a mess there is on the saw horse.. the fuel Im using has 20% oil with 5% nitro....Then again it did use 1.5 lts of fuel today.
Here is the 1st true run up with full controlls and the Keleo ring..

Your engine sounds great jaav! Did you happen to tacho it? It sounded like you are getting some serious rpm's!
Well, you basically have five .80 four-strokes running in one spot so yeah their is going to be copious amounts of oil out the exhaust. But oil is a good thing. Better than not enough and ruining the engine.
I personally use fuel that has an 18% oil content and then I add a couple ounces more castor oil to the gallon can.

The original foursrtoke fuel has 10% oil because more made them run erratic. Saito has done away with rod bushings so they need as much oil as possible. These radials spinning 7k-8k rpm are loafing along just like the early OS fourstrokes when 10% was deemed appropriate.

Is that the master rod hex head bolt you are asking about? Might have to have a machinist friend make one for you out of brass hex stock.
Parts are notoriously difficult to source. Have you tried Conrad in Germany? Or is Conrad UK the same thing?

hi guys, long time no see. As you may recall my 400 radial died when the bolt in the crank came out. Well tomorrow is the day i can finally get the spares (its been over a year).Alsoin my new job i am verylucky as i build model engines all day long.I am also very lucky becuase i have an egineering workshop to play with and i amhoping to give my 400 a bit of a makeover. Not to that standard of kmot's effort, but i hope it will be an improvement on the standard finish. Time will tell!

True, but....sigh. very annoying.
Also, i know its not a radial but i have a video of a very nice engine i made at work. My throttle rod kept falling off which is why i keep fiddling about, but it sure goes well!

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
The answer to most of those questions is yes, i made the engine at work, i am lucky enough to work at laser now (shhhh, its a secret :P ), and the engine is totally awesome. It was the first Laser V i had used and it was a doddle to set up and very powerful, its always great when your own product exceeds your expectations! Since this video i have switched to an 18x8 Menz wooden prop, rpm is now around 8500 but with greater thustand prop noise much reduced . The engine is destined for an ESM P39 (build log of myself and others found here http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...399741&page=18 ) that is slowly progressing.
With regard the black finish its a special, we dont do them very often, althogh i have a few ideas that may see more of them like this in the future as i think it looks really nice. I will try and get some more detailed photos for you guys if you like, the engine is all dusty at the moment with rags in all its ports as i have been building the model round it, i will give him a clean and a bit of a photo shoot!

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
I picked up my spares for the 400 on friday and there is a huge improvment in the quality of the parts. the old conrods look like they were made by hand, the new ones are not bad at all. i will post photos later

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
I decided to was to lazy to re finish all of the parts of the engine so i have just rebuilt it and tried running it this weekend. After alot of problems with burnt out starters i have got it running half decently but am having problems with the slow run adjustment. I am going to have to install it in a model and play with it some more to get it set right. But for now at least it runs

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
Yea it was nice to be deafened buy the sound of a radial again, my issue with the slow run was that i tuned it up for best performance/response and all was well. I stopped the engine and refueled and upon restarting found it would only run for about 15 seconds before running down and stopping. The low end had to be richened back up by 3 turns to get it to run. Then i retuned the low end again with the enginerunning well off glow and had to go back in those same 3 turns to get my performance back. I have not tried to restart it but i can only assume it will play silly buggers again.
My saito 450R3 on the other hand started first flick by hand after 6 months idle, but it is much higher quality so its not suprising really.
