RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
Just another quesiton. When Itook my engine for a checkup, I noticed some sludge around the bearing at the very nose of the engine. Ihad spread Mobil 1 Synthetic oil on the internals while it was not being run, and upon reassemblyI coated it again. Is using Synthetic motor oil bad for the internals of this engine? Does it sludge up, or only in certain conditions? Any help would be appreciated.

What seems to be the best combination of on-board glow system, fuel, glow plug type and prop size that gives consistent in flight performance without dropping cylinders? Doc

Since these are general questions more so than being specific to this engine I will try to help out.
Tom will be along with his thoughts shortly

I noticed some sludge around the bearing at the very nose of the engine. Im going to step out on a limb and say this is grease that it was prelubed with at the factory. If you hava run a lot of fuel through it then it might possibly be a build up of castor.
Is using Synthetic motor oil bad for the internals of this engine? Bad? No. Doesnt hurt a thing. However, using Synth does not accomplish the protection you are trying to accomplish. Synth has great shear qualities (when engine is running) and great heat resistant qualities (as far as breaking down) but it has poor "wetting" qualities. (aka: "break free" properties) You can compare this to water running off, or beading up, on a waxed car. Synth does the same thing inside while the engine is at rest. This is where castor really shines, it has wonderful wetting properties, and if left for years, forms a hard water tight shell that protects your internals. These engines are usually called "gummed up" which is actually a good thing. Normally a heat gun and a tank of fuel restores the engine to its full glory.
This is the protection you are looking for while inspecting and reassembling. For the proper lube/wetting qualities you need to switch to ATF. (Not the ford type though because it has grit in it. Use Dexron)
Does it sludge up, or only in certain conditions? No, not in the way you are thinking (normal running) It can be burned up to a sludge but it takes so much heat your motor would be long since dead.

Personally, I would not use automotive engine oil in my model airplane engines. That's just my preference.
Marvin, I have never flown my ASP400. I have only run it on an engine test stand. I use a Microsens glow driver and it works well. Never have dropped a cylinder with it connected. I use Powermaster 15% Sport Fuel, and a Master Airscrew wood 18x10 prop has run the best on my engine. With the Microsens connected, the engine will idle until I get bored with it.

For what it does, it is too expensive, but it works.
For a fraction of the price, you could easily make a servo operated switch mixed on the throttle channel....just activate golw from 0-50% throttle.
4 C size nimh batts in parrallel, and it will last for ages.

Ok Guys. has any one thought about converting the engine to spark ignition. The ignition will be the biggeset pain.

Actually, yes I have thought of it. Ihave located 1/4 32 spark plugs:http://sparkplugs.morrisonandmarvin....ex.cfm?menu=v3
And some sort or ignition module, good luck if you can figure out how it works (page includes 3,5,7,and 9 cylinder ignition modules): http://www.becker-fm.de/shop/group/Z...f_Sternmotoren

that the ignition timing no longer relies on a delicate balance between nitro content, needle setting, compression ratio and plug type.
with spark ignition you could run on 0% nitro and get a lower and more reliable idle, better transition and (depending on the engine) maybe even more power.

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
I was thinking more along the line of better fuel consumption and a clean air frame and that low slow idle rumble.
Yes the C/R will have to be lowered, 1 or 2 head shims.
For the time being Id be using std Rexel ignition modules.
Yes a bit more weight but I think it will be worth it..
he plane its going into is a scale 30s mono so its a slow bird.
Chop down 5 hall effect sensors and mount them on a ring on the crank...
Still playing on the idea. as I have a few spare ignition floating around...

Setting the 5 hall sencors will be a pain..Nice to fit a scale dizzy. http://www.cncengines.com/snowengine.html
Just have to find some head shims..Or make some. Will have to do a dummy set up..

I doubt that the material which it is made from will change the sound.
But changing the shape an dimensions will probably make a difference......

I just remember in my younger days we used to fit a copper tail pipe on the Holden ute to give it some bark. the copper pipe resonated louder than the steel.

Just been watching Kmot's #4 vid, Love the low idle..Oh and thanks for showing the fuel tank...Flying cost just for the fuel $12 a run!!!
Know they drank the fuel, but not that fast..

Ello gents..
Just got my microsens glow driver and it works like a charm with the high quality leads they sell. I just have two questions if anyone can answer them. They are:
What thread is the crankshaft of the FS400ar?
and
Does anyone know of a clutch that would fit this crank? I've seen it done on other airplane engines but I have no experience with clutches whatsoever.
Thanks

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
Any one droped the oil %? Reading in one of the Mags doing a review on the new OS 7 cly they were using 8-10% oil...It makes sense having a multi cyl basicaly having 5/7 cly blowing oil into the crank case
