RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
WooHoo!
My cam gears arrived today from the UK.
Ordered and paid for on Tue 26 March, in my letterbox today Thur 4 April (with Easter in between).
Not bad. Not bad at all.
Thanks heaps JEn - I must say, I'm very impressed.
Great service, great price, and great turn-around time

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
Well, I had a great day nice weather and my 400 was purring like a kitten....at 7300rpm dropped to a 20x8 menz prop and the engine is as happy as a clam (assuming clams feel emotion). Also with the drop in prop size the fuel consumption is down and I can get an easy 8 minute flight plus a minute to lineup/land and have about 1/4 tank in reserve. Also with the higher rpm I did not need to use as much remote glow power at mid throttle and in fact cut it right back to idle only. My only area of concern is black nasty oil coming from the front bearing, I think its vibrating in the front housing and I am worried its chewing up the ali. The crankcase oil is lovely and clean so its a localised issue. If there is a problem I think I can remove the front housing without removing the heads/backplate/crank. For now im just going to keep an eye on it. In any event, the chaps at the field were very impressed with the sound

That's more than likely. The fit of the bearings is so poor in my engine they just fall out. I had to glue them in with Loctite last time

When I can be bothered I will take off the prop driver and have a look. I may be able to coax the bearing out with the crank still in place (yes the fits are that bad) if I can do that I will then clean it, and go mad with the green Loctite I use at work. that stuff is designed to hold bearings on shafts etc so it will be fine. also if I need to change the bearing I can melt the Loctite with a blowlamp

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
Trying to get my replacement bearings sorted according to your list, Jon:
[ul]
- crankshaft front : SKF 6000 2RS ( sealed ) x 1
- crankshaft rear : SKF 16003 ( open) x 1 ( Nota : I think we could fit a 2RS type sealed bearing with no problem, as petrol engines)
- camshaft reduct gear : SKF 619 /4 ( open or zz or 2rs ) x 2
- Camshaft : INA K12x16x13-TV/0-7 (needle bearing)
- Master Rod : INA HK1012-B ( needle cage ext )
[/ul]
Not having a lot of luck with the INA HK1012-B
The closest my bearing buddy can do is a BK1012 ... nothing there with a "-B" suffix.
Am I looking for the right thing, or is there perhaps a typo there?
TIA
BJ

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
The bearing from asp/sc whoever is actually a good quality german bearing so I would have no issues using that one. the rest are pretty crappy though I think. For mine I am definitely going to try and remove the front bearing without taking the engine apart. I think I can do it if I am careful. the reason I don't want to strip it down is A: laziness, and B: the engine is currently working very well and I don't want to disturb anything if I don't have to.

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
Sea Fury T - 6 days. I will try out the fit of the saito 450 (I really don't think it will go) and will offer up the cowl to the 400 and see how it fits so if anyone is thinking about this model I can give you all the info. From the threads I have read it will need the weight of the radial in the nose to get the c/g right without lead. If my 450 will not fit, but the 400 will, and I can find a buyer for the 450 I will seriously think about another 400 for the sea fury. I am cautious because of the recent spate of issues reported on this thread here. Also the Fury is looking like a 22-24lb model and I am not sure the 400 has the power give a sea fury scale performance. Anyway, enough talk. when the kit arrives I will post photos and words about it.

Sorry I must have missed it, which Sea Fury is this please? The Black Horse Corsair ends up around 22lb with the 400 radial and performance is pretty reasonable so I would remain hopeful :-)

Hey gang,
been quite some time since I last visited. Too much work, too little play and a lot of stuff around the house to do.
BUT I am back in the FS400 game. I have started on my next test model with the neat 400.
Its the ESM answer to the black horse gilmore red lion. I already like this model more as it has a proper landing gear

Nice plane
Still trying to source something to put my 400 in that I can actually buy down here in Australia.
Who'd have thought it'd be this hard... ??
