Dave,

That has to be one of the most difficult things that one will ever have to do. My and Janelle's hearts go out to you.

Dave,
My heart goes out to you, that had to be tough. My wife went thru a battle with cancer last year. She is in full remission and I am thankful. I can't imagine how rough it would be.

Dave, my sincerest condolences. My grandmother had intestinal cancer at 40, they took most of them out. Somehow she managed to live to 72.
My other grandmother got lung cancer. She found out to late, it took a year and a half for it to be over. My sister found out she had a tumor in her brain during a pregnacy. She chose the baby over treatment. I still have personal belonging's from all of them and probably alway's will. I'm not comparing them to a wife, for that I can't imagine, just the cancer part.
Once again, My sincerest condolences!

Thank you for the kind words, gentlemen. Now that the job is done, it's like a weight lifted from me. Having many close friends up here, (and all my new friends in the Brotherhood) has helped immensly. There has always been someone to help lift my spirits.

You have my sincere sympathies. I am fortunate, in that my wife is a cancer survivor. After 47 years with her, I cannot imagine the emptiness that would be there without her.

Several have completed their assembly of the Great Planes ARF. They are reporting good maiden flights with their models. I don't know how to feel about this airplane, other than to welcome any Waco of any type.

Note to Dan Hudson. I'll be seeing you in a couple of weeks. I hope Lakeland is ready for us, and that the weather cooperates with us and does not bite us as it did Sun N Fun.

Mitch Wants me to remind everyone to send him either a private message, or snail mail, or email for your wishes concerning Tee shirts. Mitch and I will be meeting in Lakeland for Top Gun and will make the decision regarding the color and possible design changes for the new shirts. So please don't expect him to be able to pull the requests from this thread for your shirts. Thanks for understanding.

Question for all you Waco fans out there Irecentlyreceived [most] of a Barth 1/4 scale YMF-5 kit (still awaiting the fiberglass parts and wingtubes... hope to see them by the end of next week...). Question is regarding balance - trying to decide on an engine for my Waco and wondering what any of you out there that may have built the kit had for "CGresults" what engine are you running, and how did it balance (right on, nose weight needed, tail weight needed.....).Curious about overall weight as well.

Only recall seeing one post that specifically mentioned the balance - seems like one fellow used a Zenoah G-62 and ended up adding 18oz of weight to the tail. Seems odd for a bipe, but okay!

Choices I'm looking at at the moment - Saito 300 twin 4C glow, Saito 57cc twin 4Cgas, soon-to-be-released Evolution 77cc 7-cylinder radial 4C (saw at Toledo, Ibelieve these are basically former Seidel designs going to be made in India for Horizon?). Lightest of the bunch is the 300 glow... plus Ialready own it (big plus!). Just not sure that the glow engines will smoke all that well, haven't had good success in the past versus a gas engine. That would lean me toward the 57cc gasser.... but it is a pound heavier than the glow engine. If Ineed nose-weight no problem. If it tends to come out nose-heavy, then lighter would be better. But a 7-cylinder radial would be awesome, even if it is glow and might not smoke so well..... but it's the heaviest of the three! Don't mean to ramble, just appreciate any feedback you may have on engine choices and resultant weight needed for balace on the Barth 1/4 scaler.

Oh - long time Waco fan - had a 1/6'th scale Pica YMFfor about 13 years before someone talked me out of it. Still have a NIBkit for the Pica 1/5th scale that I've been sitting on for about 10 years, but decided to hold off on that one in lieu of the 1/4 scale. Oh- and built the Dumas walnut scale stick &tissueWaco for indoor R/CusingParkzone Sukhoi gear this pastWinter.

Thanks for any info you can provide!!

I’m looking forward seeing you at Top Gun in a few weeks.
Five hundred pages and over 12,000 posts is quite a thing. With over 200 members that has to say something about the Waco and the men & women that build them. This year will be four years since we’ve met and you’ve been a good friend. With all the pictures I have this has to be my favorite.

bhall01, can't help with specific Barth info, but I have been flying a 25% UPF now for 10 years. Basic info, if it will help, 90" span, AUW 16lb, ST G2023 (2300?), 19x8 Bolly gf prop. Balances at 22% MAC without ballast, but with the 1100 nicad just behind the firewall. Carries a small video camera these days which I swap out for the pilot when flying scale comps. The only mod which I recommend to other G2023 users is to replace the carb with the equivalent Jett version, I have had no engine failures while this carb has been installed on this engine. Can't say better than that. Airframe-wise, do modify the U/C so that the oleo action actually works, coupled with nice squashy, soft wheels it will save the structure, and make all your landings look really good.

Hi bhall01,

we normally recommend to install a Laser 300 or 360, so the Saito you may use will make a good fit. With such an engine the model will normally not need any weight for balancing. Of course if you will add some reinforcements which is not necessary at all you will have to consider this for the CG. But be assured even if you will use a heavier engine the model is not to suseptical. You can easily achieve the CG by moving Servos and battery.

Glass fiber parts are on their way and should arrive depending on the forwarder.

Have fun
Peter

Barry,

It was me who had the G62 and the 18oz of tail weight and that is with electronic ignition on the engine. The plane flew well so the cg was ok. You might want to consider a DLE-55 which has just a little less power than the G62, but weighs quite a bit less.

"Only recall seeing one post that specifically mentioned the balance - seems like one fellow used a Zenoah G-62 and ended up adding 18oz of weight to the tail. Seems odd for a bipe, but okay! "

"1 1/2 scale,"

I think that would be 1 1/2 inches to the foot, which would make it 1/8 scale.

Getting close to the end in my Waco ARE build. But I have a little problem in how to create the strut cuffs or fairings on the removable wing struts. Here is how it is shown on the plans and on the full size. I'd appreciate any thoughts, opinions or methods for accomplishing this.
Thanks

To All,

Sorry not a Waco question

hi brothers I have a problem with three view dwgs.. We eventually want to build a Great Lakes special. Currently we have three views from Harold Krier's ship but the struts are uncommon to "normal" Great Lake designs. Normally they have N-struts. As Krier's version is a radial which is perfect we would also like to built the boxer engine version. To enable both version in one kit we are in need to have the dwg. information for the boxer version as well. Unfortunately I have not found any usable dwgs. for the boxer version. The only address seems to be Steen Aero lab.. The are offering a lot of Great Lakes dwgs. but no information what's on the sheets (e.g. radial-, boxer- or in line version). Does any one of you know where I could get hold of a boxer version dwg set 3 view or even more views with section details would be nice.

Thanks for your support in advance.

It is closer to 1/7th Scale, 360" (Full size in inches) / 52" = 6.92.
