I'm looking into building another Waco and the Barth's are an option. His US supplier sent me copies of the manuals for both the quarter and third scale models. The quarter scale manual was dated 2002 and the third scale was dated 2010. I was under the impression that he updated his quarter scale design to reflect the changes he made in the third scale model, however the manual doesn't look like it. Has anyone built the quarter scale, and if so what is the date on the manual? Comments on the quarter scale would be appreciated, the plus's and minus's. Some pictures of it framed up, would also be appreciated. Are there any dedicated threads on either size, a search in RCU comes up empty.

I don't know when, or if the quarter scale has been updated, but Peter is on this thread, and probably will comment. I can tell you that if I were going to build a quarter scale version, it would be Peter's model. Probably the same for the third scale as well.

Chuck, Errol in S.W. Africa is building a 1/4 as well as I am as far as scale this is most likely the closest you can get. I've had mine almost 2 years and i feel like I've bearly put a dent in the building process. Yes my instruction booklet is a 2002 version. The plane is designed and builds lite, the european rules seem to have a tighter weight restriction then we do, so the woods you find in the kit are very light and the fit tight. all in all if I were to build another kit, as Bill said either Peter's 1/3 or another 1/4. Here are some early build photos I've gone backwords since then.

If you plan to compete with the model, be sure to check all the modifications that have been posted here prior to cutting your first piece of wood. It becomes too late once you have started.

Happy to see Scott maiden his Dad's 40% model at Monster. I'm also happy that Scott is as good a pilot as he is. Too bad that AMR (and others) subscribe to the wrong point of balance. At least Scott is approchable on the subject and will rebalance the model. I think that he will find the change remarkable.

Several weeks ago, I asked the Brotherhood how you guys added the leather coaming around the cockpit. So far, no comments on this. Does anyone have any suggestions? I can see where it would be much easier on the larger scales, but on the 1/5 scale, it gets to be a problem.

Hello Joe.

For the leather coaming around the cockpit, I used the handles from one of my wife's old purse, even the stitching is perfect.

No problem on not seeing my post, Thanks for your reply. I'm still a month or so away from this step, but I'm trying to get ahead of the game a little,

However,your reply does not help me a whole lot with respect to how you attached it, or what you did to give it shape. Ihave a strip of rather thin faux leather but my attemepts to wrap it around a thin piece of tubing and then trying to stitch it to the edge of a piece of balsa wood were not good. I did about a half inch and gave up. I do have a piece of 3/4 round black rubber that was sold by Foremost Products many years ago for that purpose. It goes on fairly easily, but it looks likea piece of rubber tubing, not leather,

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

I used a piece of "foam backer rod" found at home depot in the weatherstrip area. It's used for stuffing into cracks and gaps for weather sealing.
It comes in different diameters. I cut a slit about 3/4 of the way through it, and fastened it to the model using white glue or canopy glue. It comes in a gray colour and can be painted...I think acryllic paints work best. I does have a sort of "grained" pattern to it.
Just a thought.

Dash, on the 1/3 Barth go into the building pics Waco YMF5 section of the trend and the first posT "REDCESAR" has a photo step by step pictures of his build and if you follow his build you wil also find "BIGBOY99's" build also of the 33% kit plus a lot of modifications both have made that make a lot of sence. I do beleive they check into the forum from time to time but a PM to them might generate the help your looking for. They live in The Netherlands, and Germany, their birds are well thought out and well built-good luck-the 33%er is a PROJECT.. but a beautiful one.

The purse handles were U shape and I simply used a razor blade to split them open, then glued the stiching from the back side to keep them from becoming undone. there are several pictures on page 500 that will give you a better idea of the finished job.

I also used the Goodwill purse idea for all the leather in my cockpit. Worked Fantastic.

Glade you made it home OK long drive. Sure enjoyed you and the Waco to bad it wasn’t this weekend it was a beautiful day today.
I was working in the shop about 2:30 today and had a Stearman (I think) flying right over the house it was pretty neat got the camera out and took a video. If I get a chance I’ll post the video.

I just started my second Waco. It's a Barth 1/3. Had been in storage for a few years. Don't know how old it is. Bought on RCU. Some mice lunched on spars and sheeting. Lumber must be metric, but I'll work around it. First Waco was a Pepino 1/4. It was a real pain, but I got lots of good help here. The Barth manual is pretty skinny. Parts list is in German. Are there there build threads with lots of photos like the ones by Waconut out there?

Not as many Barth build threads but there are several guys who have built and are building Barth kits that post here. You may just have to prod for pics and help as needed.
