Barth sells a beautiful quarter scale Waco kit. I'm presently building the third scale Waco and built the quarter scale about 6-7 years ago and could answer questions is you are interested. I'm still gluing balsa, but am looking at using a DLE-170. It seems like a lot of power for this type of plane. If anyone has a suggestion, please jump in. I can get about 15% off from Tower if it order before the end of the month.

Personally, I like to have extra power. If you manage your throttle, and still fly it scale like, but you have it if you need it. As long as it still some what fits. That's just me. Steve.

I have a 3W-157 in my AMR 1/3 Waco and it s more than enough power. It will pull it through huge loops. I beleive the AMR kit builds heavier then the Barth kit as well.

I crashed mine last spring and it is going thru a total rebuild at the moment, nothing wrong with how it fly's just pure pilot error. Gotta keep power on during final, too slow will get you in trouble.

Very windy and cold weekend up here in Maine, so I spent the afternoon building a dummy radial for my GP WACO ARF using the included plastic dummy radial and pushrod tubes. I mounted the plastic motor to a lite plywood backer plate so that I can mount it to the battery tray which is mounted to the firewall instead of gluing it to the cowling as per the instructions. I added a few details to try and represent the wire harness and spark plug wiring. It's cut out to provide cooling air for the single cylinder Saito 125 and the muffler. The firewall has right thrust built into it and the battery tray has it as well so the dummy engine sits at an angle in the cowl but it does fit around the engine nicely. I may see if I can add a wedge behind the mount as I continue to work on it to see if I can change it's position. I plan to add a lower support post as well to reduce vibration. Not bad for an afternoon's work.

Hey guys, long time no see.
Does anyone have photos of a full size pilot seat for a Classic Waco? photos and measurements are what I need. I know someone that has one of the 3D printers and would like to try making me a seat in 33% scale. Any help would be appreciated !!

If you want to look back, you can find where I made the scale seat from aluminum tube, card stock and aluminum sheet. Took an afternoon but well worth the time.

I should have some photos in a few days. Getting close to being finished . It's looking like I'll be at around 15 1/2 pounds dry for my 1/5 scale. How does that compare with the average? Power will be the 1/6 Gemini..

I've been meaning to post - does that count?

With a little guidance from you all, some good old fashioned luck and some patience, I scored what I think was a nice deal on an un-built Pica 1/5 kit.  It's the older one (80's, blue plane on the box), and though I was hoping for the newer version, I could not pass up the price on this one.  It will actually be a while before I can start building, but I'm excited, and in the meantime I'm working on reading this thread.

Don't throw rocks at the older kit. Look on the end of the box. There should be a number there. Please let us know what that number is.

Joe, the Gemini will handle the weight with no problem. Fifteen and a half ain't too bad. I've flown them at over 20 and the only thing is a tad more speed on approach is needed. Ask Mitch. He flew a third scale that you would not begin to believe the weight of. Great job Mitch (in case I didn't tell you). It's kind of like you flying a Dash7 With a load of large girls on board.........

There are three different numbers:

KIT RC-12 printed on the label
1203 stamped on the label
74012 stamped on a sticker

Do tell the significance of the numbers.

Unfortunately, that was never a problem We only had one flight attendant. I watched a program last night on the A380 making it's first flight from Frankfurt to SFO. It had about 25 flight attendants. Some were guys, but mostly GOODLOOKINGgals under 35 (a guess). If a guy couldn't connect with that to choose from, he had to have a problem!

Thanks for your comments on the weight. Ifeel better already. I still haven't tried to see if it will go in my van assembled. I might try that today. At least the fuselage. It's cold an ugly here today, so I'll be working on the model.

Can't comment on the number on the sticker. If the number 1203 is stamped on the end label then the production number should be 203 from the 1981 run (if my research is accurate). The RC-12 was the Pica designation for the kit.

Thanks for the info. The sticker w/number looks a lot like an old price tag, although there is no remnants of a price, just the 74012 number (Stock # maybe?).

However, closer inspection of the number stamped on the label reveals that I was wrong. Yes, it's the end label, but the number is 41203. The 4 has faded a bit and Ididn't see it at first.

Then the kit should be from 1984 and would be production number 1203. This should be one of the last kits prior to going to the white and red kit.

Hopefully the dies had been sharpened prior to crunching the parts.

A cursory examination suggests that maybe sharp dies were not a priority on the day this kit was punched.  But I'm not deterred, I'll just refer to your signature line often throughout the project.

I'd recommend using your scroll saw and use the die marks as your guide. Carefully cut the parts out and you will have better luck with your kit. Takes a little longer, but after all, it is a hobby.

If the ribs are all plywood, do your self a big favor. Make up a few plywood forms and cut new ribs from balsa. This way, they will all be the same size, and much lighter. The area around the dihedrial joints can be confusing , so go slow there and make sure you understand whatis going on. The spar doublerswill require some thought. My first wing, the lower one, had me cutting openings for the spar doublers and Istill got it wrong. I made the upper wing with my own balsa ribs, and it went together much better. Not only that, I saved six ounces over the ply ribs, and the wing is actually longer!

If you redesign the wings moving the spars to the correct location and then build the center sections using a spar doubler that goes from the center of the wing out 3 bays in the wing, you will not only have a more scale airplane but a stronger one as well. This was all covered back 3 or so years ago. Look at Dan Hudson's wing templates. They have the spar in the correct location to be able to install shear plates to mount the interplane struts.
