Hey guys. I'm working on wing tips need some advice on the shape before I go any farther in to it. Is the top of the wing straight all the way to the tip? Does mine need to come up until it's on the same plane as the top of the ribs?

Steve,
Here’s a pic John posted back some time I dropped the bow tip down ¼” then I think
W-7 was 1/8” down and W-6a 1/16” hopefully John will jump in and confirm this.

Thanks Dan. Some pics looked like it was on the same plane, while others looked like it sloped down a bit at the tip.

Well, hopefully that's right, that's exactly where the tip sits now. Down 1/4 roughly in the center of the tip bow.

All,

From general walk around photos the shape is difficult to see. I was able to photograph a YKS wing under restoration at CCA for the HARM, as the wing construction is nearly identical to the YMF to try and show this. I am using the Pica plans numbers as reference to the rib numbers.

During Top Gun, one of the Waco guys was scored down on the tips and this brought the problem to light with the Genesis kit. The plan form (top view/outline) is ok; it is the front view profile that is incorrect (Taper towards the tip). Ken (khodges) also noticed the problem (wrong top and bottom taper) with the Cox ARF and corrected it. Terry Lamb (TRlambsr) worked with Dany (Genesis) and has contacted me for these photos to correct the Genesis kit.

On the full size, with a straight edge placed along the tops of the ribs, at the high point and parallel to the front spar, W-7 is approximately 1/4-5/16 lower and W-8 about ¾” lower. (These are measurements from the full size wing)

Along the bottom of the aileron spar, the taper starts between W-6 and W-6a (point A). This requires the Aileron spar and Aileron LE to be reshaped slightly and the last W-6 rib to be tapered along the bottom(from the rear spar to the aileron spar) to become W-6a. Also the top of the aileron spar has a slight taper near the tip (point B) that starts at the endof the hinge (almost at the fourth corrugation of the aileron). The main spars start to taper (top and bottom) at W-6a and are shaped a bit different. The front spar tip has a rounded taper ending at W-8 and the rear spar is a straighter taper ending at the tip bow. The front spar is further forward than the Pica plans show.

3400a – Rear view of the wing aileron bay and tip uncovered
3400abc – Same as P1 with reference points.

Additional info;

Taper in the aileron spar starts about 29” from the tip end(tip bow/spar junction).

Distance from the wing tip to W-6a at the aileron spar isabout 24”.

(I only showed one of the photos previously posted)

What size screws are you all using for the piano hinges on the ailerons? I'm concerned about them departing the wing in flight.

I wish I could help you. I, unfortunately don't know anything about that engine other than that I would love to have one. I'd bet someone in the saito forum could though.good luck finding the info you seek.

According to the box cover it is indeed a 53cc engine.

Steve,
Did you remove the pins from your piano hinges and replace them with smaller size so the hinge moves more freely? When you do you can put the hinge back together and stager the screw holes so they don’t bind together when closed.

No, not yet but was planning to do just that. I'm still working on the tips and still need to finish the aileron corrogations yet. I'm no where near that point. It's a slow road I'm on here. I was just wondering about the screws as I need to place an order with microfastners soon.

On the AMR wing plan, offers were made, drawings and photos were sent. All were refused. The kit will continue as before, "Stand off scale".

What a beautiful model! I had to double check the N numbers to make sure it wasn't modelled after the same plane mine was. Except yours has a much, much nicer fiinish!

Hopefully this is the last reassembly till the flying field, (depending if it fits in the van this way!). As you can see the new windshield is slightly smaller than the previous one that came with the plane, but think the dims are closer to scale. You can just catch the faux front pit cover. Cut a piece of light ply, followed the edge with small tubing and covered the entire assembly with light black leather left over from doing the arms on my office chair.

All systems are installed and tested out. You can see one phase of the display for the LiFE pack in pic #3. Simply took the stock system and added a NO pushbutton to the neg lead. The blinking red LED above the locking ON/OFF switch, (left over from my aviation days) is there to remind me the power is on. The pilot is removable to access the remote glow. Just finished programming the new Tx for aileron diff. First flight will tell if I got it right.

Have left the cowl off till the engine is set up to my liking. As you can see the new standoffs are installed. Cut from a length of alloy angle and tapped for 4-40 button head screws. Cowl is a bit chewed since it came cut for an OS 120. The cowl is also oriented so the Saito 125a valve covers fit into a pair of bumps. Would have been nice to grab a new cowl at Toledo the end of next week, but Fiberglass Specialties is MIA again this year.
