Default RE: Savage SS .25

I just got finished painting and mounting the new Savy X GT2 body. This is my first 3 color paint job, but I think it turned out ok. I think it compliments the new wheels too. I am not happy with the pics though. I'm trying to find a good back ground to show off this new body, but my pics didn't turn out nearly how I would have like. I will take some more later though.

I can't wait to get the new motor in there too. That purple head just doesn't look right through that body. I'm gonna get the blue triple rate springs all around and I'm thinking about ordering the Twisted Toys black .5" Extended LCG TVP's for it. After I get all of that, I'm still gonna try to replace all the stock purple aluminum with blue. That's all I have planned for the truck and I know I will be happy with it once I get it there. Anyway, here's the pics. Expect more soon.

Looks good. The tires are Proline Mashers.

What color head do you guys think would look the best poking through that new body of mine? (Gray, Black, or Blue) I was dead set on the Axial .32, but then I started thinking about just stripping drivetrain parts all the time. Its still an option if I'm wanting a black head though. But I was thinking about the STS D.28M with the gray head or the LRP .28 Spec 2 with the blue head. The only reason the LRP is an option is because it is in stock at my LHS so I wouldn't have to wait on shipping. I've had the extra money for a new engine set back for a while now, but I keep changing my mind on which one to get.

I finally made my last decision on which motor to run, and I went ahead about bought it before I could change my mind again. I decided to get that LRP Pro .28 Spec 2 6 port motor that my LHS had in stock cause I didn't really want to wait on shipping for another engine. I got it installed and am going through the break in process right now. So far I've only got 2 tanks run through it, but I can already tell this is gonna be a strong motor. I'm very happy with my selection.

It might be slightly overgeared right now though. I switched to the 18t CB and then I had a 47t and 52t spur gear to choose from. Well, the 52t was my first choice for break-in but the motor adjustment did have enough room to allow a 18t CB with the 52t spur so I had to settle for the 47t. I think a 49t spur should be about right so I'm gonna order one of those blue aluminum/steel ones off ebay when I order the blue triple rate springs.

The 52 tooth spur will make it rev very quickly. I use a 16/49 combo which works very well. Plenty of wheel stands and quick enough.

I just thought I would tell you guys that the Hot Bodies heavy duty composite clutch shoes are junk.[>:]They would constantly slip with this new motor and they made the clutchbell get to about 300 degrees. When I pulled them out, they were almost melted and really deformed. When I bought my Savage used, it already came with aluminum clutch shoes. They were starting to get worn out so I thought I would try these composite ones. Bad idea. So I pulled out the ole Dremel and smoothed out the old aluminum clutch shoes to try and get more life out of them until I can order some new one. Would it be worth it to upgrade to a new 3 shoe clutch and flywheel, or should I just get a new set of 2 clutch shoes for this new motor.

On another note, I finally got through the whole break in procedure. I used the "heat cycle" method since I've had good luck with it before. So tomorrow I can hopefully put a nice performance tune in it and see how much of a difference the aluminum shoes will make. I can't wait. I also had to readjust the shiftpoints with the new motor and gearing. This thing should be a rocket by tomorrow.

One of my buddies is already wanting to dragrace me with his Sportwerks .26 MGT. Bigger truck, smaller motor. I should kill him. I guess I will find out soon enough. I want to get as much fuel run through mine as possible before we do run them because I wanna make sure my motor is loosened up enough.

Three shoe clutch will be better for your new engine.
I got these shoes and they seem ok so far.

You will need a different flywheel ( 3 pin ) than your original though.

Do you have any suggestions on a nice 3 shoe flywheel for this thing?

Also, I found a big crack in my stock fuel tank. I'm wanting to do the mid tank mod, but I need to do a little more research and figure out how I wanna do it so I went ahead and bought the HPI racing primerless Savage tank that was in stock at my LHS. That will be my temporary fix until I can get a nice mid mounted tank.

I just use the stock flywheel. has worked fine for me thus far. RRP makes a 2 shoe flywheel, not sure if they ever got around to making a 3 pin one.

Well, the old worn out aluminum clutch shoes I have are definately an improvement over the brand new Hot Bodies Heavy Duty composite clutch shoes. No more nice pretty paint job for me.[] The LRP .28 with 17/47 gearing is a wheelie monster. I slid about 50ft. upside down numerous times so that kinda added some, uh, character to the body and head. Who cares? Thats what the Savage was made for wasn't it?

This motor was giving me a fit trying to get it tuned right, but I think I got it now. I did strip a spur on it though and the only ones I have lying around are the 52's, but they won't fit with the 18t CB.[]

I'm getting ready to order that blue/silver aluminum spur for the truck, but I was wondering if I should get the 47t or 49t version? I'm also going to get one of hardened vented clutch bells and I'm debating on the 17t or 18t in that too. I'm thinking about trying 17/47 or 18/49 but I just don't know which one to get.

I currently have 17/47 in mine with a spec 2, but I'm running tires that are a good 3/4" taller than yours. It's a wheelie monster, it will pull the front tires up with ease in second gear. I'm switching back to Panther Pythons though, so I'll probably stab a 18/49 combo in there and see what happens.

What is a good clutch combo for this thing? I'm thinking about the Robinson Racing 3-shoe vented flywheel, Ofna blue aluminum shoes, the HPI racing 17t vented clutch bell, and the GPM blue aluminum/steel spur 47t. Do you guys see a problem with this? I'm getting ready to order it, but I just wondered what you guys though about it. I'm also going to get the Savy-X wheelie bar, blue progressive springs, and the HPI dual stainless brake system. I wanna order one of those complete Ofna throttle mods off ebay if I can find them again.

I'm still waiting on a clutch combo for this, but while it was down I decided to add a few hop-ups. I bought all eight silver aluminum A-arms for this thing off ebay. And my LHS had a sale today, so I picked up a silve aluminum brake hub and a new brake disc for it. While I have it apart, I'm going to give it a good cleaning and strip all the stock purple aluminum stuff to make them silver. I'm also gonna install the 3 speed. I hope to order the TT 1/2in. extended black LCG TVP's for it and I'm wanting some new shocks. I just don't know whether or not to try the CEN's or the LST's.

I just got a great deal on a used roll bar like the ones off ebay for my Savage. (freebie) It's purple so I don't know if I'm gonna run it or not yet. What do you guys think about them? I love the way it looks, but I don't like all that extra weight up heigh like that.

Also, if I do decide to run it, its missing the mounting brackets. Do you guys know where I can get them? I emailed the seller off ebay, but he hasn't replied to me yet.

I just got finished stripping all of the stock purple aluminum parts to silver and got them polished up to a nice and shiney finish. I also finally found the blue triple rate Savage springs I've been looking for so I got them ordered and on the way along with a stainless steel screw kit. This truck should look pretty sweet once I'm done. It should also be faster, more powerful, handle better and accelerate harder too. Actually, now that I think of it, it should just be a whole new truck. I can't wait.

Yea, I guess I did. I traded for it a while back.

I did have a few problems today. At first I didn't have enough shims behind the new flywheel it tightened down against the engine block. When I would try to loosen the flywheel nut to get it back off, the crank would just spin. I didn't want to scar up the new motor in any way so I filled it full of afterrun oil to hydrolock it and keep it from spinning. Well that worked great and I was able to get everything assembled correctly the 2nd time. But when I tried to start it, I must not have drained all of the afterrun oil out and I ended up pulling the pull start handle over the rope knot.[>:] Do you guys think I can take the pullstarter apart and get that rope back out without unwinding the spring or messing it up?

Also, I was anxious to see how everything looked assembled since it was all silver now so I decided not to wait on the new TVP's. They are on order though, so I will just add them along with the blue springs once they arrive. Here's a few quick pics of my progress so far.

for the pullstart, you could fix it without tearing it apart. I'd try taking it off and rotating the spool counterclockwise, or use a small flathead screwdriver to feed it through

Ok, thanks man. I'll give it a try and see if I can fix it.

I just noticed how much weight those new aluminum A-arms added to my truck.[X(] What do you guys use to weigh your rides? I would like to see what mine is puttin down right now cause I just might go back to the stock arms, or atleast RPM ones.
