Starting Issues with K4.6 Engine - Replacement recommendations?
I own both a Savage SS 4.6 and a Hellfire with the 4.6HO. At first I thought it was an issue with just the savage engine, but in no time the problem began to show up on the Hellfire.
Both engines have been broken in correctly with the help of a very knowledgable friend of mine.
The one way bearing doesn't grab. It doesn't matter Roto or Pull start - it's like it slips in both directions. With the glow-plug removed it will turn over all day. Tearing the engine apart and cleaning the one-way bearing fixes the problem. I've spoken to a few other K4.6 owners who look at me like i have three heads - I seem to be the only one with this issue.
My Rush Evo and Ofna UltraLX both have the external one-way bearing (in the Roto start backplate) which I have never had an issue with, hence they get more road time.
I'm done with the K4.6 engine. Looking at other engines it seems all the .28 sizes from various manufacturer's have an internal one-way bearing. One engine that looks promising is the Picco .26 - it has an external one-way bearing and has received good reviews. Would this engine bolt right up to a Savage? Are there other engines recommended to work with the Savage which have an external one-way bearing?
I greatly appreciate any help....
James

Did you try replacing the one way bearing? I had the exact same problem as you did, except in a Picco .26 Outlaw. Found out that the bearing housing was cracked, so the actual one way bearing slipped inside the housing. Replaced the one way bearing and haven't had a problem since. Also, what kind of fuel are you running? Fuel with high oil content tends to have more oil seep into the one way bearing and pullstart and cause problems.

I have replaced the one-way bearing P/N 15233 four times at $20 each. I contacted HPI and their answer was to clean the part with denatured alcohol which does in fact work for the next run. Let it cool and try starting again - same issue. It is almost as if the one-way bearing is gummed up from the fuel or something - that and my experience with my other external one-way bearing engines is what makes me want to go with a model like that.

hi
i have the same problem with one ways bearings in my savage 4.1
there is an o ring in the backing plate that could be worn out.
also when you take apart the roto plate that holds the one way
put a small o ring on the shaft before putting back the one way.
that will help with oil blowing by and getting on the one way bearing.
i did that with mine and it helps.

Buggymangp, the bearing is inside the engine pressed into the part that engages the connecting rod, not outside where the roto-start is. It wouldn't be nearly as big a pain if you could simply pull the roto-start back plate and replace the one-way bearing, but you must take the back plate off from the engine (and screw up the O ring) to get to the one-way bearing.

I opted for the OS 30VG engine. The OS starts every time. Gave the K4.6 to a friend of mine. I warned him, but he still took it.

dam boy this is an easy fix hey, all u need to di is, take ur OWB out, and sand the shaft not going around the shaft but going with the shaft, going up and down, that way even IF theres oil on it, the little grooves from the sand paper will make it grip.
