Hi guys,

I'm sitting here trying to remember the "basic" manuvers.

I recall seeing a show that described "4 basic manuvers" from which all other manuvers are derived:

1. loop
2. roll
3. ?
4. ?

The others I can't recall, but I think that Spin may have been one of them? And Straight Line the other?

Maybe there were only 3 basics? Does anyone out there know what the heck I'm talking about, or am I ready for the "Loony Bin"?

You are not ready for the loony bin. You are right on the money. Loop, roll, straight flight, and spin (or autorotation) are the basic forms of flight that all other aerobatic manuevers are formed from. Some people include take-off and landing, but these are not basic forms of aerobatic flight, they are basic manuevers.

Example: A Cuban 8 is two 5/8th loops with 2 stright lines and two half rolls.

Example: An avalanche is a loop with an autorotation on the top (a snap is an autorotation just like a spin but nastier).

Mark: How would you classify a hammerhead? Straight line vertical, then what? 1/2 spin?

Vertical up line, yaw around the planes CG with less than 1/2 wing span displacement prior to the down line.

Right, I know how to perform a hammerhead, what I'm wondering is: what is the wing-over at the top considered, considering that there are 4 basic manuvers (loop, roll, straight line, spin). Would it be considered a 1/2 loop (even though it is done on the yaw axis, it is still a half circle) or would it be considered a 1/2 spin?

I'm guessing Spin, but I'm no expert.

No it is considered a stall turn.

I don't think a stall turn is one ov the 4 basics, is it?

In the film "Daredevils of the Sky" which is film about aerobatic pilots, they list the four basic maneuvers as the

roll
loop
hammerhead
spin

PSK, are you positive about that? I was sure that straight line was one of them.

So how about this: loop, roll, straight line, stall.

"stall" would cover any manuver where the wing is stalled IE hammerhead, tail slide, etc. A snap roll would be a combination of roll and stall, etc.

A hammer head is a stall turn!

Frankenthumb. Those are the maneuvers the short documentary about aerobatics listed. It was a film made by "NOVA", "Daredevils of the Sky".

Is a tail slide a stall? I thought it was a ballistic manoeuvre.

The wing never reaches it's critical angle of attack.
