Yeah, mine dates right back to the beginning - fall of 1972. It's been repaired and rebuilt so many times that it no longer really looks or flies like it should anymore. I took it out a couple weeks ago and was lucky to get it back on the ground in one piece - trims were so far off and it wasn't correctable without REALLY becoming squirrelly. Brought it home and took all the gear out of it. I'm planning to modify the LT40 just slightly, to make the cockpit and nose area a bit more rounded, like the Mark-1, and I'm going to round the vertical stabilizer a bit for the same reason. It'll kinda be like an LT40-A (or sump'in).
Definitely going to cover it in the Mark-1 scheme though. Gonna use SIG Koverite & dope for a change (yeah, going back to the way I used to do planes). Was thinking about just getting a Mark-2 but I really don't want to mess with that plastic cowl. Had enough of that with my GP J3 Cub-40.
My biggest "undecideds" at the moment are; Am I going to built it as a 3-channel and leave the dihedral in it or am I going to build it as a 4-channel and take the dihedral out almost entirely (leaving just 2 degrees), like I did with my Sr. Falcon all those decades ago? I'm also not really sure whether I'm going to put the old Enya .35 (that powered the Mark-1 originally) in it, or a OS-40LA - - or my OS-46LA (all 3 have a lot of years on them - especially the Enya) and give it a bit more power. I'll probably decide that at about the same time I'm getting ready to actually mount the engine (as in, whichever I grab at the time is the one that goes in it).
Definitely looking forward to the "build". Haven't had a plane on my building board since my Bird-of-Time (sailplane) - 3 years ago.

Dave,
I am a constant builder, currently I have a modified Top Flite 182 on the bench I'm trying to complete. My LHS often refers to me as "One of those Scale guys" when he catches me discussing details with other customers. I also have inherited several partially completed kits and a partially completed TF Corsair I traded for waiting for my attention. I have recently had two short kits cut for a pair of 1/5 scale Ryan Sports Cabins of my own design and a short kit for a Richard 1/4 scale Globe Swift.

I inherited a Sig LT-40 ARF wing and still had a fuselage kit NIB (the wing was elsewhere). I've modified the fuse with pads for floats, a tow hook aft of the wing, and wedges in front of the nose gear to 'straighten it out' instead of slanting 6 degrees aft, in line with the firewall. Still gluing pieces together.

Sounds great! I saw one other Kadet on floats a long time ago - she literally skidded over the water, so light she wouldn't actually set down until she was down to walking speed. Definitely a pretty cool plane. What you planning to power it with?
#656
Give me a number and take away my name! I taught myself to fly with a Kadet Sr about 22 years ago after failing miserably with a Duraplane. It had all the grace a style of a Mack truck but I loved it. Now I have a Seniorita on the work bench, plus an original MK I and a junior waiting their turns. Still want a MK II and maybe I'll try an LT. I never seem to get tired of plodding around the pattern, seeing how many takeoffs I can make on a tank of fuel. I built and flew Scale and racers for a long time but ended up coming back to the Kadets just because they are so relaxing and fun.

Oh yeah, the other trick is to trim it up nice and level at altitude with very low throttle and walk over to the pits to pour a cup of coffee. That always gets the spectators attention and then they come back for more and if you work it right they can be infected, er converted into our hobby.

Oh, I like to get in at least one tough and go every 30 seconds on the runway. I'd settle for fewer per minute when using less conventional surfaces( picnic table, roof of van, plywood deck laid out on rowboat) That was the other thing I really liked, I didn't need a fancy flying field with lots of acreage, just a potato field with at least 100 feet between trees.
#662
Count me it too, I love Kadet's!
I built my first Kadet Mark II in 1982 and another one recently that I'm just finishing up. I went with Koverall and dope on the last one and it's going to be my best one yet.

T'is my total honor to have you, Mr Mike!! Actually, I must admit that I'm a bit surprised that Gary didn't e-mail SIG when the brotherhood was started, back in February. T'was an oversight, I'm sure.
Skyrat71 - you're rather near my own "old stamping grounds" - welcome to the family!! Spent a fair number of years (8) in Anchorage with the Air Force - - they had to drag me out, kicking and screaming. That's where my "Old Reliable" (Kadet Mk-1) got her start back in late '72, and now she's flown in 11 countries and 14 US states. Gotta tell ya, I'd like to see that touch & go from a picnic table or van roof - you're WAY outside my expertise level.
Hm, I remember I did a "touch" onto a fence back in 78 or 79. Of course, the "go" didn't happen for several weeks, after the wing got put back together again.
scooper - I like your Kadet - - why is it that Kadets always look better in red? Or is it just me?

A "short" Kadet Senior Story.
Once upon a time, there was an old bloke who loved Kadet Seniors. He had several in his shed when a young bloke dropped in and started talking about getting a plane and doing some flying on his dad's cotton farm near a little town called Trangie in the very flat country in the Western Plains district of New South Wales, Australia.
To cut a very long story short, the young bloke went home with a Senior with a near new Enya 40 in it and a radio. The old bloke gave the young bloke a couple of flight on his own ten year old Kadet over a couple of weekends and the next he hears, his young friend has been flying his Kadet on his dad's property.
His flying field is several thousand acres but his landing strip is a narrow dirt vehicle track and he has been flying the Kadet and doing "touch and goes" on this narrow track.
No wonder l love Kadet Seniors. And thanks to Sig for designing and selling such wonderful kits. The Kadets, the Four Stars, the Astrohog and many more. They are really great kits which build into wonderful aircraft.

50 planes! Geez, and I have a hard time keeping all my 13 in the airworthy category at the same time. I'm impressed!!!!
Hey y'all - you're in!! 308jockey has #115, bparker3 has #116. Can't believe how much the brotherhood has grown, just since Feb.
Spaceworm!! Yeah, I remember that logo from a few pages back - would love to hear the story there, myself.
Larry! (livewire) - glad to see you're still up and about - - an oxygen concentrator, ye gads!! What kind of radio system does that use? No, seriously, I'm glad to see it's working for you, and I hope it doesn't interfere too much with flying.

Great story about a great airplane. Thanks for posting it. I hope the kid is still flying R/C.

Now I see it! Missed that in the first picture. That's the old "SIG Mini-Air Force" emblem that I designed way back in 1974. The story of how that emblem came to be is a bit unusual. Glen Sig bought a homebuilt Smith Miniplane, all built and ready to fly. On each side of the airplane, just below the cabane struts, was the logo of the EAA club the seller belonged to - the "Jerseyville Brew Angels" - see pic below of the airplane at EAA Fly-In in 1968. Thinking that even if we could get that emblem off without damaging the paint underneath, there would still be a very visible difference in the white paint - unfaded where the emblem had been, UV faded everywhere else. So Glen tasked me with coming up with a new emblem that would lay right over the old. Thus the "SIG Mini-Air Force" emblem size and shape. Glen and Hazel ended up putting the new emblem on all their aerobatic airshow airplanes (except Hazel's Clipped Wing Cub, which pre-dated this emblem).
SIG still sells a decal sheet of various sizes of the emblem. Looks like someone had a spare to add to this child's toy.
