Default Astro Hog Biplane

I just bought a new Futaba 14-SG radio and a Sig Astro Hog Bipe kit as my test bed airplane for the new radio, anyway I noticed the kit states that the airplane will weigh in at between 6.5 and 7.5 lbs. completed, however the kit in the box weighs over 9 lbs. when I placed it on the scales and the airplane still needs to be built, an engine and mount installed, fuel tank, radio gear, batteries, glue, covering, and all those odds and ends needed before it can be flown... You know what that means; over half the lumber in this kit needs to stay in the box during the build along with a strict diet on everything else in the airplane or at least the way I see it. So we will see how it goes. Anybody out there have any current weights on their completed Astro Hog Biplanes?

What powerplant are you planning?

The old rule of thumb was the plane would weigh what the kit did.

Knowing your airplane diet regimen, it will come out malnourished.   Good luck!

You know, it has been many years since I purchased a glow engine, but I will most likely get the lightest most powerful .40-.50 engine I can find.

I am not really set on anything yet, I guess I need to start researching power plants for airplanes this size.

Gary, I got to agree. You don't want your hog screaming through the air like a mad bumble bee, but grunting along with a nice grunt, or rumble of a 4 stroke.

I've not owned a hog, but a couple of them have show up at the field. Seems a 90's size4 stroke ws the choice if I remember correctly. One was an O.S. the other a Y S if I'm correct. I have a Great Planes Super Aeromaster built per the plans that is almost 10 lbs, and I have a Magnum 91 four stroke itn it. I've yet to fly it though.

A pal helped me move and, in a rare moment of generosity, I gave him my unopened Hog Bipe kit. He still hasn't started it. To add salt to the wound, I'd like it back and will probably pay him for it.

Oppps, when I saw Hog, I was thinking Hog Bipe. However, a nice 70 or 90 four stroke would still be in order. The Saito is a nice light weight one with good power and is easy to tune.

Dib

Damn, they keep moving the keys on my key board.

DON

The Saito 100 would be a good choice.

A few years back, I was "Back Home" in Michigan and ran across the local club's "Air Show" One guy was doing some pattern type flying, and he was totally unaware there was a throttle on the TX. Six minutes of wild screaming from a 40 two stroke that coulld have been 12 minutes of smooth, throatyflight on of four stroke.

I surely hope this scientific method of determining the weight of your plane is not serious! Your plane will be fine. I did a maiden on one of these last year and the builder did an absolutely terrible job. I think it had a Saito .80 in it, but down to a .56 would fly it well. His plane still flew pretty well considering the alignment issues.
The weight of the box will have nothing to do with your finished product. You will love this plane.

Do you mean to tell me that you don't like leaving all that extra lumber in the box? LOL

Must be that heavy cardboard box, lol.

I find it interesting we didn't worry all that much about finished weight back in tha day. With the latest motors which are much more powerful, one would think it would be even less of a concern. Nothing wrong with watching weight, I just pay a passing concern on .40 or bigger planes.

I do watch weight somewhat, but not to the point of checking servo weights, etc. If I like a certain engine and its not grossly heavy, on it goes. I dope or poly-u the tank compartment, put on whatever covering I feel is strong and appropriate. Fabric, and a 4-stroke for a Hog Bipe is my taste. Period trim scheme.
That's how I roll, y'all!  [8D]

I have a weight regiment I follow that includes even removing the the brass from the servo rubber mounts, and they say I am over the top...

Soooo...,  I'm gonna guess no turtledeck.

Or one rendered in gossamer, with spiderweb stringers.   I've no doubt you'll get it under 6, Bob. A YS 115 would really haul it around.

Actually I want a turtle deck, wheel pants, full canopy, and engine cowling on this one and the 115 would probably be stump pulling power for this thing.

I just finished one for an older gentleman in our club. It has an after market cowl. Saito .82 for power. It came in at 8.5lbs. The kit had some pretty heavy balsa in it. The only thing I changed out was the elevator stock. That felt like it was made of oak. I was worried about it being tail heavy. CG came out just right with the battery under the fuel tank. It think it will fly just fine.

Actually, my name is going on the trophy. I entered it, but it's his plane. It's all good. I had to work, so I wasn't there.[&o]
