Prop Alteration ?
#1
I am building a 1/6 WWI BASU kit and am getting close to covering. I am looking for a prop that looks like it belongs on a WWI airplane. Lots to choose from in the larger scales, but not in the 1/6 scale 11 - 12 inch range. I have taken a few props and rounded out the tips, in an attempt to make them look a bit more scale. I have tried not to change the overall shape or contour. They balance fine, and I plan to stain them, urathane and give them a try.
Will I create any major problems? Vibration or strength issues? Performance degradation?
Thanks
Mike

Wooden props have to be slightly compressed into the groves of the backplate or prop spacer to keep them from slipping and if overtightened in the process they can splinter in mid flight, or more frequently during starting. The modification you made to the tips of the prop will not cause any problem if they are balanced, but I am concerned from the looks of it that you may have already compressed the hub of that prop too much. This may be a problem when you install it on a plane and attempt to tighten it. Be carefull, if you hear any cracking before it gets tight enough not to slip, throw it away. Just my opinion.

I've bought one or two diameters bigger than needed and cut them down to resemble the WWI types. I don't care if their efficiency suffered for they flew just fine for me.

Hi!
Welcome to the world of modifying props!
No problem what you have done, the modification was so slight. Might even be better now, so try it out! Modifying props is soo easy to do and takes only some pratice.
Being a pylonracer for more than 30 years i have carved and modified many props, wood as well as plastic. Even molded my own carbon fiber props.
Here is a pic of a flying prop I made for my Marutaka DC-3 some years ago.
