I'm thinking about building a 4 star 120 with a gas engine. Has anyone done this and are there any build threads on this plane?

I "had" a CRRC 40cc in a 4 star 120 ARF and it flew quite well. With a 25cc Poulan weedeater engine it flew but was underwhelming, so i went with the 40. I'm not sure about the kit built, but the ARFs were known to need extra nose weight so the big gasser took care of that. I fly at 6000 ft so a bit extra power is needed. I've read elsewhere here that they are flying with good 20cc and up. I also clipped the wings one rib bay and it doubled the roll rate ( not sure that was an advantage). My ARF flying weight was just shy of 14 pounds, I see the kits show 10.5 to 12.
Other than figuring out an alternative or modified cowl there's no reason not to use gas. But with rear carb and pitts muffler that may not be a problem.

So maybe a better combination would be the 4*60 with the evo 15GX. Has anyone built one of these?

Yep, DLE20, inverted. Flies nicely. I also chopped a bay off either end of the wing.

Thank you for that information. What's the clip wing span? Did you have to make any mods to the airframe for the DLE20 to work? Did you use the RA or side exhaust?

Hey all y'all. Referencing my post #3219, anyone else out there that might be interested in a ZIP containing EVERYTHING I've got for the SIG History website? Just PM me with your address - I'd like to get a few more copies out there.

Well took a break from the hogs. Took the Rascal out back and fired up the 3W120. Wow. The little rascal should fly good with that motor.

My next thing is how bad do I want to put in new 2.4 JR or keep using 72 that i know works. I have less anxiety with a 72 because I’m not comfortable with 2.4 yet. I’m thinking with a new plane to go with what i know

I have had good luck with Futaba, not so much with Spektrum. I have a bunch of Orange RX that I use with my JR and so far they seem to be pretty good. In my workshop I have bind issues with the JR, but I found at the field the binds are good. Must be too much scatter being in the basement. The Futaba though, never ever had an issue with any RX, even the cheap ones, save for one Frsky RX that didn't want to bind at all.

Since I know how 2.4 works with these radios I have less fear of issues, a lot fewer than 72 has since 72 can be shot down by someone turning their radio on that is on the same frequency. The 2.4 is pretty robust since it has thousands of channels to search out, and does a scan before assigning the channels. You are never locked into a single channel.

The only thing that does interfere are WISP towers and their backhauls. If you happen to fly through a backhaul signal, you could get knocked out. Since they are narrow beams though, that is rare to happen.

I think there's a reason why nobody will pay 50 cents for a good used 72mHz radio. I was very hesitant to switch to 2.4, but now anything bigger than a park flyer is definitely 2.4. My favorite features on the new radios is model-memory match and not worrying about pulling up the antennae.

BTW, every few days I've been getting messages from Tower Hobbies with the discontinued items; latest was the Sig Wonder. Thank goodness there are copiers and laser cutters.

Wonder hasn't been discontinued, more likely HH is discontinuing selling SIG and just selling off what may be on the racks.

I think the more interesting question is what suppliers like SIG loss in the way of overdue revenue from the bankruptcy proceedings and if they can afford to absorb the loss. HH bought assets and did NOT assume debt so first you have to see if the previous vendors want to sell to HH and then if they can survive the hit to their bottom line and fill the orders HH places.

It's still available from Sig , as well as all the other Sig kits at the same price Tower Hobbies sold them for.

There's nothing wrong with 72MHz radio systems. I have a Futaba 9CAP that I don't see any reason not to use. So, it's not the latest and greatest, who cares? As long as it works, where's the problem?

What's the clip wingspan of the 4*120 if you remove one bay from each side? I want to see if it will fit in my truck.

Well i am calling it, no Saito 72 and 82 show down this weekend. I forgot how long it takes to build a hog let alone 3.
I will finish up the Hogs after Sig.
The 168 Rascal also took a little longer to finish but at least it ready and its not and hour before I leave for Sig.
So off to clean out trailer and off to the greatest event of the year.
