Would I qualify for BUSA Brotherhood membership if I'm not a current builder or flyer? I've built and flown the Bristol M1 and I currently have a BUSA 1/4 scale J-3 I intend to build as a L-4.

I couldn't remember if I had posted any photos here so I thought I would share a couple of snapshots of my 1/4 scale Camel. No maiden yet. I still have to get new gaskets for the carburetor. Another converted Homelite. It's not a well documented aircraft but I liked the markings. Callie Graphics really came through for me. Things keep showing up on my bench so it may be spring before It gets to the field.

Hi, khodges, yes. you can be a member of the Balsa USA Brotherhood. Please post your first name so I can add it to the roster. Nice Bristol M 1, let us know when you make the maiden flight. Post some pictures/videos of the the flight. Also, when you start building the J-3 Cub do a building thread on this site or RCSB. You will get plenty helpful advice and suggestions from other builders. Welcome to the brotherhood, need help. just ask a brother.

It would be helpful for me if all BUSA Brothers would post their BUSA Brotherhood number in their signature. If I have missed anyone please let me know.

Hey Matt, nice Camel, I like the color scheme, won't see many like it at the flying field. Do you make the conversions on the Homelite engines, what CC? Post some pictures/videos of the maiden flight, we all would like hear a after flight report. Keep us updated on your projects this winter and thanks for sharing the pictures of the Camel.

Thanks, It is an RNAF Camel. The British Navy was a little more flexible on color schemes before they combined with the RAF. The Homelite is the same as the standard weedwhacker at 25 cc's. The conversion is pretty straightforward with a flat backplate, turned down flywheel and prop adapter made from a modified adaptor from a G-26. I wouldn't call it a power house but being a side intake-side exhaust engine it is relatively short and fits well under the cowling. They tend to be heavy but that is an advantage on a biplane with a short nose.

Just curious, Matt, didn't the full sized Camel have a solid axle. I know you said this one was for the Navy but it has, as I said, gotten me curious.

Yes, If I were truly building to scale there would be a lot more wire bracing and a spreader bar structure between the wheels. On the Camel there are two axles that each pivot at a point about one third of the distance between the wheels. The kit plans show the landing gear built as shown but provide for a simulated spreader bar that fits between the wheels. It is one of a number of items that need to be wrapped up before the plane is really ready to fly. I have seen examples where people have built a more scale like landing gear. I will definitely make the spreader bar as it really helps prevent the landing gear from splaying out when the airplane taxies. I have the Nieuport 17 in the same scale and the spreader bars both looks better and noticeably firms up the landing gear.

Default Covering.

Advice please !

Many years ago I built. Busa Cub, 1/4 scale, OS 160 twin, beautiful flier.

I covered the model with Solartex which was perfect.

Solartex is no longer made and I am about to cover my finished 1/3 Cub, OS 320,

What covering do you guys recommend to give that authentic fabric appearance ?

David.

WOW! you folks just consumed 2 days worth of reading just this thread! I too am building a 33% pup and about at the covering stage now. Mine is the kit from the late 80s or early 90s?
I got it from the widow of a friend and it has been quite the unit to build .
my question is are there anything in particular I need to look at before covering so I can fix it? ( any week spots in the design)?

to add to this , I also built a 1/4 scale cub years ago... it was a kite compared to my other large bird at the time, a Byron's Originals Cap 21.
I too would not mind being a club member too as I plan on building another WW1 bird when this one is finished. As I love bipes!

Nice Enforcer, looks fast. How does it fly, have you had the maiden flight? Post some picures.

Hey Skyeyd2, post some pictures of you Pup to show us how fart along you are. I have built several BUSA WW I airplanes including the 1/3 scale Pup. Most of my WW I birds are quarter scale. It is late now, I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

Did you find any issues with your 1/3 scale pup as far as weakness? Things to look for when still naked? Mine will be getting its clothes put on as soon as the stuff arrives!

Thanks! I have to wait for the snow to melt off of our field, probably mid-May before I can do the maiden flight.

I would like to make small clevises for all the cabane turnbuckles but they are pretty small and my eyes are not what they used to be! And I really don't like it! But its life. .
