Hi Tony and Members of the Brotherhood,

Sign me up as #14. I'm a big Carl Goldberg Chipmunk fan and recently came across this thread. I hope to give it some visibility to expand the brotherhood and naturally it has a long story with hope you'll enjoy.

I started modeling in 1972 when I was 8 with my Dad who started in the 1940's. You know, he started with control line on to primitive single channel RC, reeds, and finally proportional. I started with a Sig Kadet moving on to a Jensen Ugly Stik, Kaos, and Dirty Birdies flying pattern in the late 70's. My Dad being a product of WW2, we loved scale, which was the half time show at pattern meets, and built many Top Flite, Royal, and Dave Platt models. It was of course before giant scale WW2 which I've moved on to now also screwing around with giant scale aerobatics.

But, I've always had a Goldberg Chipmunk since they were introduced in the 80's! That's how much I like the model. It is one of the best flying sport scale models ever made.

I cant remember what year I built version 1.0 but I've built and flown 3 of them and am finishing number 4. You see, I live one mile from a small RC field which is too small for my giant scale birds. I love having the Chipmunk handy for the quick trip to this field. I do remember it had an Enya 90 four stroke and the original fin and rudder outline. This may sound strange but every Chipmunk I've built has had flaps, finished in Cub Yellow Coverite and RCAF Canadian markings like Bob Nelitz's nats winning model in the 70's. The last 3 have had the fin and rudder outline modified to mirror the full size de Havilland shape.

Here are some pictures of I believe version 2.0 with an OS 120 Surpass. I know, I was young and had the need for speed. It wasn't over powered though. I had to move the firewall back and put the battery in back of the servos to balance it but it was a great plane. I was flying in a dead calm one day and pulled up into a beautiful loop. Somewhere between the top and the down side, I lost the radio. I'm not sure if it was the switch or the battery but the model proceeded to do 7 or 8 beautiful loops each subsequent one a bit lower than the previous. No throttle, no elevator, nothing. Just beautiful loops until of course the last one, not so beautiful.

Hope the brotherhood enjoys the photos. It took me a while just to find the boxes of prints let alone the pictures themselves to scan. I'm thinking about a build thread for version 4.0. I'm quite far along but it may be worthwhile to show the mods, radio install, and finishing.

Best Regards,

Bill

I came across some more photos of what I think is Chipmunk version 2.0. My Dad was an avid modeler and belonged to 4 different clubs. He owned a small Hobby Shop which was more of a hobby than a livelihood so he belonged to each local club and was president of his favorite club with his closest friends. He actually started the shop in the 70's to be able to buy at wholesale prices to make our obsession more affordable. We were building models of all types during the northern Illinois winters and flying at Fun Fly's, pattern meets, and scale contests. We'd take 3 pattern planes to a meet. To start, all were glass Dirty Birdies, Proline radios, Enya 60X's with pipes, and Rhom retracts. It got pricey. It moved to UFO's and pumped OS 61's.

One of his accomplishments was organizing the first Float Fly his club sponsored. It was a great event. The first picture is of his 2 Sea Masters and Cub behind the trees. The rest are of my, you guessed it, Chipmunk on floats. They are Goldberg 36" floats with a servo in one float to control the float rudder. It flew great. Some of my favorite flying recollections was flying it at our cabin up in the Upper Peninsula in the evening when the water was like glass. Even with floats, it was a floater. Flaps slowing it down for gentle landings. My version 3.0 Chipmunk used the same floats refinished, mounted a little differently and without the servo in the float. There is plenty of rudder to steer it on water or snow for that matter. Did that too.

I see the Goldberg floats are still available. If I do a build thread I'd be happy to share how I mounted them. I'm planning on using them on version 4.0.

Tony,

Thanks for letting me in the brotherhood. Last night I found a picture of Chipmunk version 3.0. This one I had the longest and is part of a funny modeling story. It was powered by my old trustworthy Enya 90 four stroke. You'll recognize the pilot figure as the guy from the original version 1.0 and in this "modern" digital photo you can see the Robart wheels and struts and the Klett tail wheel.

I flew this model hundreds of times to the point I retired it 8 years ago. The elevator was getting sloppy and it definitely had some hangar rash. I stripped it down and stored it in the crawlspace. 4 years ago I saw it getting out Christmas decorations and realized how much I missed it. I ordered a cowl and canopy from Fiberglass Specialists, cleaned it up, patched some holes, and fixed the elevators. I removed the covering from the elevators and cut 1/16 inch balsa inserts to fill the area between the elevator ribs. I also made 1/16 ply pieces that were counter sunk over the elevator joiner to tighten things up. I made these mods to the model I'm building now. I got the old Enya 90 out of mothballs and since I didn't have a JR receiver available, I used an old Airtronics narrow band radio.

2 years ago I was out flying alone at the field where I grew up and was setting up my landing. This model lands so easily and the flaps work great and are fun to use. On this flight though, when I hit the switch for flaps, it rolled and went in. No idea what happened. There was corn that year on the west side of the runway, I got my bearings aligned to a tree on the other side of the corn and set out to retrieve it. It was late August and the corn was at it's full height and I was going against the rows. I would go 10 rows or so and crouch down to look for my plane, 10 rows more and crouch. Nothing and naturally, I couldn't see my reference tree. My arms were getting cut up pushing the leaves out of my way and it was hot. I finally got to the end of the corn and what do I see? An enormous field of sunflowers. Seriously, sunflowers? Who grows sunflowers anyway? Look again at my beautiful Chipmunk, my beautiful yellow Chipmunk. Crap! I walked around a bit and decided to give up and go home.

That night I thought about my buddy out in the field. It wasn't the model so much, It was after all out of retirement. It wasn't the Airtronics radio. It was out of retirement as well and it was probably at fault anyway. It was the Enya 90 engine. I loved that engine. It always started on the third flip, idled well, and died only when the operator ran it out of fuel. I had to get that engine back. I went to the field in the morning, its a 100 mile drive, got my bearings from where I was standing and lined up with my reference tree. This time though, I opened the compass app on my iPhone, it was 280 degrees west, and I headed out. When I came through the corn, I marked where I came out and headed into the sunflowers looking down at my iPhone compass occasionally. I was shocked, at some point 20-30 feet to my left was the tail of my Chipmunk sticking up between the sunflowers. Who grows sunflowers anyway?

The old guy was definitely repairable. Fin and rudder knocked loose, wing tore loose from fuse and one gear ripped out of the wing. I thought it was time for a new Chipmunk though, stripped it down, and sent it to the model hangar in the sky. 2 years ago or so I decided to buy version 4.0 and waited too long. Discontinued? How could Tower Hobbies do that to me? I saw them on eBay going for way more than retail. Believe it or not, my wife found one on the internet at a Hobby Shop in Florida. Probably a better place for sunflowers and happily, a good place for Carl Goldberg Super Chipmunks. Thanks for the Christmas gift Honey. I started version 4.0 last year. If you see one on eBay or at a swap meet or even old inventory at a Hobby Shop in Florida, pick it up.

OK, I guess I really need to join the masses Please sign me up! I promise to behave (within reason). I have 2 complete kits and 1 wing kit . None have been started as yet as I am finishing up an Elder 40 that will be followed by a Lou Andrews Aeromaster. The Chipmunk will be done up as Art Scholl's was. I was a big fan of his and had the opportunity to talk with him on more than one occasion. Very interesting guy with some scary stories about things that can go wrong at an airshow. I'd like to build a wing with retracts installed, but I'd like to hear from someone who has actually done it. From what I have read the landing gear is a weak point.

Friends, here I present the reason for my Chipmunk Brotherhood.

Yesterday I successfully maidened my Black Horse Chipmunk, powered by a NGH 9CC engine and controlled via FUTABA R/C equipment. It was a short flight as the engine was not fully runned-in and it worked "just" for the flight but sounded wrong and I didn´t want to risk the model. I know well the fame -perhaps better infamous- of this engine but being honestly I managed to make it work and now I will try to fully running-in and fine tune it. If not possible I will switch to a ENYA .90 four stroke as originally planned.

It only required certain right trim and just a pair of clicks for down for flying beautifully and I even have time to try first flaps position as well as making a pair of rolls deciding it was too much flaps for first position and too much ailerons for scale aerobatics.

Hope to give further good news in a couple of weeks.

Best Regards.

Edit: I do not know why thumbnails show correct but when clicking actual photos show inverted????.

Default Another Chippy getting readied

I picked up a Carl Goldberg Super Chipmunk at a swap meet, about 6 years ago. Planning to pull it out of moth balls and start building in November.

I am am going to modify to use 2 servos for the ailerons, pull-pull cable for rudder. I have a new in the box Super Tigre G60 blue head that I’m thinking of using, but also considering a Magnum 90 four stroke. Also going to purchase fiberglass cowl and pants, and not use the plastic supplied in the kit. Thinking about shock absorbing wheel struts on the mains. Is that a bit of overkill?

I would love love to hear your suggestions and advice, before I get too far along. Thanks in advance for any help. Tom

I never knew there was a Chipmunk Brotherhood....

Here's a pic of my latest. Goldberg Super Chipmunk powered with a Saito 100 and a 13-8 prop. Graphics by Callie's Graphics. It might be the best flying plane I have ever had. Absolutely no coupling whatsoever. I can do super slow rolls right on the deck and fly horizon to horizon knife-edge. Lomcevok's are also easy to perform and are very impressive to watch.

I believe this makes Chipmunk #9 for me. My first was a $25 garage sale rescue that became my second RC airplane. I soon built a CG S. Chipmunk as my first kit. I even put a YS 1.20 in a couple of the Chipmunks but flying qualities suffered. The Saito 100 is perfect!

TonyBuilder - I would love to be added to the Brotherhood. I built and flew my first CG Chipmunk around 1996 - it was traded off for something else at the time but I've acquired another kit that I plan to build this winter. Been slowly getting away from glow and hope to power this one with a Saito FG-14 (which is the same case as the Saito .82 glow version). Not looking for crazy unlimited vertical, just nice peppy scale flight. Any thoughts out there on this engine?

I always wanted to have one. Might get a chipmunk kit as my second build. not sure where to get though. I'd actually prefer a laser cut kit and those that have slots like the one in the picture. it seems that, that way, it wouldnt be that easy to go wrong.

I'm now on my way to finishing the SIG 1/4 Cub which happens to be too intimidating and too much challenge for a newbie builder like me.

So which make or manufacturer do you guys suggest? Thanks in advance!

Smile Want to join the Brother hood

I have a 100" model I am going to finish in the Art Scholl Super Chipmunk Scheme.
But my first one was an EZ- ARF Art Scholl Super Chipmunk back in circa 1985, I was positioned in Puerto Rico for a year and I brought my Chipmunk with me. It had an OS .25 engine. I joined the Local R/C club in the San Juan area, and entered into the pattern contest. As being it was my first one ever, I signed up for beginners class. It was a great fly that week end. The best part was I won the event by the skin of my teeth, it was a close tie. Later in the 1990's my uncle was going to surprise me with a large Scale 100" Super Chipmunk. However, long story short, my uncle passed away and never finished it. I have it now, and is on my sights to want to finish it.

I started flying Free flight back in the 60's, (Started when I was 11 years old), Flew what I built, repaired what I crashed. Also learned to fly control line. RC at the time was primarily read control, and proportional was just becoming available. WAY TO MUCH MONEY for a 12 year old. So my first R/C was a single channel "Push Button" radio by COX. So, when I was 12, a club member gave it to me as a gift. WOW, I was now able to control my free flights!!! Anyway, I have built and flown ever sense. (there are so many stories I could write a book.)

I have been in the R/C hobby for over 60 years, and have flown free flight, U-control (combat) and R/C from 1/2A to Giant scale RC. Love to build and fly, as I was partners with my uncle in an a small trainer (.35 to .40 Size) R/C kit manufacturer. flew a lot, and then worked for a few years at JetCat USA as the electrical technician. And now (2017-2018) I am the Production Manager for "Graph Tech RC". The manufacture of Carbon Fiber landing Gear for IMAC style and other aerobatic aircraft.

The De Havillands I have owned:
#1 EZ-ARF .25 Art Scholl Super Chipmunk ~1985- 1987 Won the Caribbean Beginners Class Pattern Contest in 1985 with that plane.
#2 House of Balsa 1/2 A .049 DHC-1 De Havilland, But I converted it to an Art Scholl Super Chipmunk ~1985 - 1995
#3 In construction 100" Art Scholl Super Chipmunk. Build started in ~1995 - ?

Please add me to the brotherhood.

I will be posting pictures of the craft.

Hey [email protected] that 100" Super Chipmunk deserves a thread itself!. Here youu have your first follower for that.

By the way I also learned aeromodelling from my uncle Jose Maria "Pepe" Cardín here in Spain.

Best Regards.

ID:	2251696Hello all, I'm a big Chipmunk fan, I acquired an ARF 1/5 de Havilland Chipmunk (not a big ARF fan), I enjoy building my planes, 5 yrs ago. It was in the Royal Canadian Air Force color scheme, which I didn't really care for. I pulled off the skin, did some beefing up of the wing, adding webbing between the ribs as it didn't have any. Beefed up the firewall to make sure it could handle the DLE 30cc engine I planned to install. I fly nothing but float planes, and wanted to make this one a float plane as well. I went with the Tri-float system from seaplanesupply.com. I was a challenge getting the set up right and the strength inside the fuselarge to carry the floats.

Here are photos of my Chipmunk, a great flying airplane!

Hey fellow Chipmunk lovers. I’ve been in love with The Super Chipmunk back in the early 80s seeing it fly along with Leo Loudenslager, and the French Connection and their Cap 10s at the Sussex Airshow in NJ.
I have an original Sig at my dads house in his garage. I’m just not sure if the shape that it’s in.
Im also getting interested in the big scale Super Chipmunk kit that I saw at the ama expo east show. Just need to know if my DA 100cc twin will fit in the cowl. I post a pic of the one I saw.
Frank!

The paper in front of the Chippy says the kit is available from National Balsa. I searched and located the kit there under Wendell Hostetler kits. It states the plane is designed for up to 120cc engines, so my thoughts would be a 100 would fit in easily. The kit lists for $425 plus $89 for canopy and $125 for cowl and wheel pants. 112" wing span, 26-301b weight. Also available as a short kit for $295......Gene
