Default covering material strength

I am going to be building a dch sailaire a.k.a. sailpig and I want to cover it with coverite micaflim. The look reminds me of my silkspan days. The question is,is the micafilm strong enough for such a large open wing? I know the tech data says 2 to 3 times lighter and 700% stronger that plastic films. But as with all advertising claims I tend to be skeptical . As always thanks for the info.

I use Micafilm Quite a bit myself and it is, by far the strongest of any of the films. Take a piece and try to tear it, and do the same with the plastic film and see the difference. Takes paint well too. go fer it.

yes, Micafilm is very strong and reasonably light. One of our club members has a giant Quaker (it has a 13 or 14 ft span) and the whole thing is covered in unpainted Micafilm. Flies around at about 12.5 mph it's so light for its size.

I believe you have to attach it with a glue made especially for it, though.

Yep, extremely strong stuff. A wing covered with micafilm seems like it could be used as a baseball bat. Use Coverite Balsarite or SIG Sticksit for adhesive. Thin the Balsarite some with acetone so it doesn't glom up and make lumps under the covering. I use 2 or 3 thin coats and sand lightly with 320 or 400 paper then cover.

OK. I'm interested. Where do you get Micafilm?
