Default oh no, not flying wingtips!!!

Hey all,

I am building a Sig Astro Hog. Following the plans and manual to a tee I inadvertantly discovered a mistake! Per the plans I glued the wingtip on to the right wing only to discover later - after the glue had dried, of course - that the leading edge of the wingtip does not match the datum line (from the center of the LE to the center of the TE) of W5 as it is supposed to be.

The question is what to do now? Leave them as is and have something like "washin" rather than straight as it should be, saw off the wingtips and lose 11" of wingspan or call Sig and have them send me another wing kit.

Sadly, these things always seem to happen on a weekend when no tech help is available.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Confounded in California ...

I'd be tempted to cut 'em off and do it right. That plane has such a lovely flight envelope, I'd hate to mess with it.

I agree, I don't think I could bring myself to change anything about that plane. But never fear. Unless they changed the kit the wingtips are made from a curved piece(s) of light ply, balsa sheeting and some sticks. I think the curved pieces are light ply, (I supose balsa would do in a pinch) so all you would have to do is scratch make thoose arcs. The low tech way would be to lay some tracing paper over the planes and trace the arc. If you have a ship's curve, a metal template that resemables a nike swoosh, you will be able to make prettier lines. Then take some carbon paper (wal-mart, kinko's etc.) put the carbon paper between the wood and the tracing paper and draw around the line agian. If you happen to have a scribe agian you will make a prettier line. Then use the outline on the wood to cut out a new arc and sand to the plans. Bam! A new wing tip in the same amount of time you would have been on hold with Sig's techie support.

Tailskid,

I cut the wingtip off, cleaned things up and reglued everything back nice and neat, the way it's supposed to be. On to the next wing now ...
