Cubnut what cowling did you use? Is it the one that came with the kit? The ABS one ? What do you guys prefer fiberglass or abs? I built the engine from Cubman and want to put it on the cowling for scale appearance. How did you cut out the holes also and make it correct? Thanks in advance,Hacksaw

I attached ther cylinders to a piece of 1/8" plywood and glued some spruce to the front and back edge of the ply to screw into to attach it to the cowling. I made a template for the cutouts using pics for referance. The cowling is the stock cowl that came with the Cub. I plan on buying a fiberglass cowl in the future, the stock cowl is developing cracks.

RE: Sig 1/4scale C/W Cub build
Got back to work on my 1/4 scale Sig Cub over the weekend. I bought a disc sander a month or so ago and was anxious to get started cutting the horizontal stab and elevator pieces from their 3/8' balsa plank. I scoured the manual for any note about sanding to the line, or sanding the line off. Finally reasoned that it would not look good to have all those lines on the parts and sanded till they were gone. Well, as I layed the parts out on the tail drawing, I was horrified to see how they were about 1/2 to 3/8 short of covering the drawing! But, the joints were perfect--that sander really works. What to do? I thought about calling Sig and ordering a new printed plank, but ended up laminating enought 3/32 balsa strips to the leading edge of the stab, and the trailing edge of the elevator halves to make up the difference. This is a rookie mistake that not only held up the process for a while, but is also embarrasing. Other than that, construction is going great. Fuse is nice and straight, 5/16 cabin wires went in without a hitch. Hope to complete the fuse tonight and start on vertical fin and rudder. Sure is a lot of epoxy used on this bird.

Hi Greg,Im not a pro at all it was also my first build.I dont think your idea would be a bad one but you better watch out for the tail weght.Mine is a little tail heavy so far for the engine I put on it{page 15} Im thinking I will have to put a magneto back on it for that reason. I might end up running just 2 cycle gas but can run mix of nitro also. so watch out for alot of glue.

Larry--It's still a little undersized and I used thinned white carptenters glue, but the thought of picking up weight crossed my mind. All along, I have been intending to use a 26 sized gasser that would have required a little more tail weight, but now am having second thoughts. I can buy an Evolution 26 that will fit nicely, but adding the required pitts style muffler will put the whole affair in the $500 range. The Zenoa 26 is a little less expensive, but by the time EI is added and pitts muffler, it to will be in the $500 range. I'm not cheap, but I have a Saito 1.80 sitting around picking up dust (not really, it's in the box) that would provide more than adequate power that I now think will be used. It runs fine on 15% glow fuel and I have an on board glow for it as well (although its not needed). This engine would fit nicely inverted. Yes there is exhaust residue, but what the heck, I already own the engine. If I get the chance to pick up a small gasser in the future, I guess I could swap it out without too much work. The 1.80 weights about 33 ounces. I might put elevator servo in tail, but will use pull pull on rudder up in the fuse.

Anthony,
On that front dihedral brace, I thought of using aluminum instead of it. Or I thought of doubling it. Or is there a need? I have heard of them breaking on a hard bounce. What do you think?

I think stock is fine,
I have not had any problems but then again I haven't had a hard landing or even a nose over.

I thought of a one piece wing like yours but I dont think it will fit in my rig. Do you think this 1/4 scale will fly better, easier than my GP 40 size cub arf? I love it, and it flies great.

I have flown the Goldberg and Great Planes 40 size Cub and the Sig 1/4 fly's better. It is very steady and predictable. Landings are a breeze, most of the time I will land with power on a grease it in on the mains and touch and go's are a blast.

The plane fly's great with the Dihedral in,
I am sure it will fly good without it also. I am sure your plane will be nice when your finished.

Crashland--I left the dihedral in mine as well. I thought about reducing or eliminating, but decided that the model was designed to have it, so left it. Here is a photo after much of the framining. I am working on the wing tips and landing gear now. I am not happy with my soldering of the gear and will try again tonight.

I've about got the RH wing done. I am putting another blind nut and screw in the rear wing jig thingy. Just for added measure if I nose over or something so's the wing wont tip forward and break that plywood. I am going with that 2 piece design.

Nice work on the cub. I am just starting to cover mine and already miss the building, always my favorite part. I built a 3 piece wing on mine and decided on using a Supertiger G2300 for power. Just could not bring myself to cut up the cowl for a gasser. Here are a couple of pics, and please keep us posted on your build.
Thanks JEB
