Hey Safts,

Yeah, I also ordered my retracts from Tower and they are really hard to beat for speed of shipping. Really impressed with their service everytime i've ordered from them (more than i care to own up to incase the wife see's!)

No, the cockpit kit has not yet arrived. It's not holding me up at the moment so its not too bad, but it would have been nice to have been here by now. Just about to start bolting down the R/H retract......

Who is your build going? Any pic's??

Thanks

Hey Safts,

When i ordered my retracts i managed to get $30 off which was effectivly free shipping...

My wheels are 3 1/4", are yours 4"? I have screwed down my wheels between posting and it looks pretty good. just on minor shim to get the rake the same and it's all good...

I'll wait a little more on that cockpit if it's alright with you? Hopefully the one i ordered will turn up this week. If it doesn't, i'll PM you my address.

thanks

Hey Safts,

Yeah, I've already made a start on the fuse (see the pic below). I'm at the point where i need to install the retractable tailwheel. I'm waiting for the push-pull cable set to rig the steering for it.

I'm also just about to go back through the thread an see the pic's some of the other boy's have posted regarding it's set-up.

Been side-tracked the last day or so because my mate gave me his Concept 30. I used to have one of these and it wasn't that great to fly but this one doesn't have any where near the slop mine did. Luckily it's only missing a few parts and i have located them in the internet because parts are becoming harder and harder to find for these old choppers. Came with the kyosho hughes 500E body too.

Thanks

Ticketec,

As I mentioned a few pages back, I had the tailwheel all mapped out. Well, I spoke too soon. While I have it fitting in its place to my satifaction, I ran into some difficulty with the set up, location and assembly of the pull-pull yoke. How do you plan to do yours? Will you be kind enough to post pics when you get to that stage? Thanks.

p.s. your 'stang is looking good.

No, I haven't heard from asphalt. I'm very anxious to hear of his maiden flight.

I too have stalled. More of a money issue tough ( it's fishing season, ya know ). I have too many hobbies and not enough jobs to support them all!!

Hey Bull51,

I haven't done very much lately.... but i have started back up on the tail wheel area and will post pic's as soon as its complete.

Well, the cockpit kit finally came in!!! It only took about 7 weeks to get here. I'll translate that for those struggling with the numbers Over 1 1/2 months!!! The worst bit was they only shipped it just under 2 weeks ago but didn't tell me they hadn't shipped it or even said sorry they were running behind when i asked where my order was at.

So Buyer beware about ordering from bob divley or scaleaero.com. Just my experiences.......

Having said that, i ordered two cockpit kits from them, one for the mustang and one for my 60" Ju-87 Stuka. the Stuka kit is not much good. In that it was what i was expecting in terms of quality. The Mustang kit was acutally a suprise as it was better than i was expecting!

The decals for the insturments are throw aways for the most part, but the vac forming are pretty good and look to be pretty scale from my information. I have some pictures of the mustang insturment panel and i'm hoping to make up some new dials to suit from those. Safts, i'm happy to make them available when i'm done. I'm not promising anything, but they will be better than what mine are. The dimension at a quick glance look pretty good for the TF kit. I think with a little massage, it will make a fine cockpit.

I'll flat out at work at the moment and working right through the weekend, but i'll post some pic's as soon as i start to get some work done on the cockpit items.

Thanks

Well,

I've been putting in the hard yards with the Mustang and most of my mod's are complete.

The pics show a step-by-step view of the changes i have made to include the retracting tailwheel (left hand servo), and rudder servo with push-pull cables to the tailwheel (right hand servo connected to the carbon yoke in the center of the servo tray), and the relocation of one of the former about 3/4" back to allow the cockpit kit to sit in the right location.

I tried as much as possible to use materials included in the kit to make this mod work. I ended up buying some ply to make the new bulkhead. I could have used the original had i sanded it down to fit, but i wanted to leave it in place so that i wouldn't distort the fuse when i glued the replacement one in.

The elevator servo has been relocated to infront of the original servo tray and actuates via a sullivan golden-rod. The throttle servo sits opposite it, and the retract servo/valve are located in the wing where the aileron servo would normally sit ( dual Aileron servo set-up used) and this allows for only one quick disconnect to be used..

Hope this helps Bull51,

thanks

Ticketec,

Looks great!!

Yes that helps alot. it is very similar to what I have been trying to set up, minus the relocation of the servo tray. Where did you get the carbon yoke?

Hey Bull51,

The carbon yoke was cut from a approx .040" sheet of carbon i have at home[8D]. The composite guy's at worked vac-bagged 12 layers of carbon for me in competion with the sheet metal guys to see who could manufacture the lightest motor mount for my EP Concept chopper... they sheet was 1ftx 1ft and i just took the left overs home for these kinds of jobs.

You could also use G-10. The bearing, etc is from the bellcranks supplied in the kit for the ailerons.

Well, I have been steaming ahead with the Mustang. The wing is now bolted into place and this required a lot of sanding of the wing saddle. The instructions called out to oblong the wing dowel holes to get the wing to sit right, but i didn't like that idea. Sanding the wing saddle was far more work though. I used the great planes laser incidence meter to maintain the required +1/2 degree incidence. The stab and rudder are now also glued into place and although i really wrestled with the wing alingment for about 2 afternoons, i was pretty happy with the stab and rudder almost straight away.

I have also started painting the cockpit and i'll post some pic's when it is a little further ahead.

thanks

Hey, just saw this thread. I absolute love this plane. I built the same kit in 1999. Here is a picture of my "glassed" version.
The plane is a dream to fly and land. I have retired the plane to ceiling duty, but just bought a new cowl and plan on repainting changing from Big Beautiful Doll to probably a Cripes A Mightly color scheme.

Good luck with your build up. Looks good. I originally used thin sheet metal for the landing gear doors, then traced the outline on the wing using 4" wheels which takes quite a chunck out of the wing. Not in the plans but I always double wing sheeting (1/16x2) the under side where the wheel wheels are cut out and heavily apply diluted 30 min epoxy and alcohol.

A picture of my horse:

I have used a YS91FZ, OS120, and YS120 on this plane. I usually run a simple MA 14x8 prop w/91 and OS. I flew the plane most w/YZ91. I personally think a 4 stroke is necessary to get the CG right and improve handling when landing. When running in the local warbird races, I swapped to higher pitch and shorter probs w/the YS120 like 12 and 13x13N. Please continue to post pics of your build. Hope this helps.

Hey Pbooth,

Thanks for the info.

I was feeling a little dumb for posting pic's of the build again where they are available in the thread earlier on, but i'm happy to post them if people are interested in seeing the progress.

I just had to do the "tape together and see how she looks" photo's. I temp installed the gear for the photo's and also plonked the canopy into place. I have been woking on the top decking and mass balances for the controls. I've got to sheet the small section between the horiz stab and the vertical stab as i should have realised that this sheeting would come in handy. No big drama, just a little more work.

I hope to finish the tail area in the next few days as i have been given the green light to order my engine, spinner, mounts etc and i'll also get the last items i require at the same time. This means i should wait till this order comes in before i start on the forward top decking area.

There is starting to be fewer and fewer parts in my kit box!!! I have really enjoyed this build so far and i have to say that it's been the first in i don't know how many years, that looks like it will get complete start to finish! most tend to languish in the garage for a few years before i become excited to finish them again.

thanks

P.S. i placed my S&B models electric mustang on the wing for size... She's only 32" span but a pocket rocket on a brushless set-up.

Hey Guy's

All's quiet on the Mustang front??? Am i the only one left?

I received my engine and mounts!!!! I have install the firewall and engine mounts, and have also complete the top decking. I was pretty happy with how it came out.

I have a few little jobs around the airframe to complete before i start with the nose section, and i also ordered the spinner but it arrived damaged and so i'm waiting for it's replacement to arrive.

I'm now starting to think about exhaust's and what to do. I would love to have a keleo exhaust but can't justify another $130 for the powerplant department. I could make my own but can't be bothered at the moment. It's just that i feel like i've done all this work so far and i would be short-changing the model if i didn't do something nice up front.

The other down side of a scale exhaust is the mess it leave the model in after every trip out to the model field. I made an exhaust for my WM zero and it looks and sounds great with the smoke coming out of the right places, but man is it a pain to clean at the end of the day....

thanks

Ticketec,

You are not the only one left. I check this post daily. I just have not had the time to put into the stang recently. Not to mention I need some radio gear to move forward and I just dont have the cash right now. I do appreciate your posts and pics, they will help me so much when I get going again!

What size O.S. is that? As for Keleo, I think the only exhaust they make for O.S. is for the .91, is that true?

Thanks,

bull

Hey Bull51,

Good to hear your still around...

The O.S. is a 1.20 FS pumper. As for keleo, he specialises in custom exhausts so i do not doubt he could make an exhaust to suit my needs, but he does have an "off the shelf" exhaust for the .91.

thanks

I am in the middle of building one of these kits and have really got myself stuck. I cant figure out how to get the radiator corner pieces to bend into place. I've tried soaking them in water for 5 minutes and still cannot get the wood to bend as much as it needs too. Is there a trick to getting these things on, I'm also thinking I'm going to have to use some 1/8" sheeting and just laminate until I get the correct thickness.

here's a trick for bending balsa that has worked for me take a little windex like 15% and water in a spray bottle then spray/soak the balsa you want to bend if you have a jig then tie the wood down to forn it and let it dry if you dont get the full bend out of it the first time after it drys then respray and bend it some more til it bends fully then let dry after it drys it will keep its shape
