Hey Jamie,

looking good. I have given up trying to make sure she is perfectly scale because I thinks this would end up being too much work and i would have been better off starting with a set of plans from the likes of Platt, Taylor, etc...

Your door look pretty good, scale wise too. I've done the same but have blown up to the right size the gear doors, a good three view i'm working from. Because i'm going down the same/similar path as you are, with working doors......

The Electric model airshow is about 3 weeks away now so i can't wait to get back into building the Mustang.

Thanks

That was what I originally did too.......

It was then I realised the kit u/c geometry was all wrong, so I changed the blown up plan as neccessary to make them work as best I could. The inner doors are very close, with on the radius of the forward curve being increased by about 3/16". It's the outer doors that have been butchered, with the pivot point being moved rearwards by about 30mm.

Hopefully wont look too bad when it's all together.

This will probably be my last Top Flite in honesty, as I agree that Platt/Taylor etc plans are basically better. They're more accurate, build lighter and fly on smaller engines. Now that laser cut parts are available for them, there's no real reason for me to start with a sport scale kit after this one.

After tracing the gear doors onto the wing last night, it twigged that I'd need to build the belly fairing on first. That's almost finished now, just getting the last little rubs of filler sanded off. I'm really happy with the looks of it. It looks so clean that I think it would be criminal not to have working doors now

I also realised that the thrust line was about 1/4" too low as well, hence the wrong shape of the upper cowling and decking fwd of the windscreen. Something else to be changed.

I'm almost finished designing my radiator shutter control module. As you probably know, I've built a cooling duct through the fuselage and out the radiator exit. I've got a thermocouple on the engine and a servo operating the shutter door. The control module uses the shutter door to maintain a temperature range on the engine. It's looking promising so far. When fully closed, the exit area is roughly twice the intake area, and when fully open, it's around 8 times the intake area.

If anyone else is stupid enough to like the sound of this, just shout.... [&:]

Ok. Since I've been lurking here, I thought I would share my P-51 (before the crash). This was build and flown in the 1995 time frame. It had a ST-90 (the source of the crash) and CJM retracts. I have a NIB kit to start rebuilding any time. Still have the crashed model too to use as a guide.

Hey Shafs,

RCmustangs pic's look very top-flite-ish. Buy the way RCMustang, where did you get the drop tanks? they look pretty good!

Shafs: Are you building a gold edition kit or one of the older red box? Good to see i'm not the only one building a "B", starting to get lonely.....

Where abouts in Melbourne are you from? I moved up to Bris-Vegas about 1.5 years ago but am a Melbourne boy.

Thanks

Hi Gents.

Yes it was a Top Flite .60 kit. It's the same version available now. Top Flite used to offer the Drop Tanks. They are scale. I had added working bomb mechanisms to the plane. They were removable. I had 1/7 scale drop tanks (still do have them) and 1/8 scale hollow bombs that could be filled with Talc or flower. The drop systems were removable if I wanted to get rid of the weight in the wing. I had cut an access hatch that had two flavors of panels. One panel had the hard points. One panel was just a cover.

I also have the scale spinner and 4 bladed prop set. Somewhere I have a snapshot of it, but it's not digital. I'd need to find it and scan it in.

I can post a closer pic if you want. I'm not near my camera right now. Like I said above, I still have the old wing and I think I still have the drop system in tact.

I'll also post some pics of a "real" or full scale "Big Beautiful Doll" that flies today. I took the pictures at the Andrews AFB a show back in 1995 or 1996.

Ok, here are pictures of "Big Beautiful Doll" from the Andrews AFB Armed Forces Open House in 1995 or 1996. I got to see this plane fly in formation with 3 other P-51Ds and a B-17 over DC during an Arlington Cemetary funeral for an Air Force general. I was in a high-rise in Virginia when it went by. It was breathtaking!

Hi

How Much progress have you made with your B model ? i will be starting this week and i will post pictures of it. i think i will be going with a 120 FS so i dont have to add much weight in the nose and its always better to have heaps of horse power. what club are you in?

Regards Paul.

Hey Shafs,

I have already built my wing and sheeted it. I only have the little leftover bits on the top side to complete. I have started on the fuse, an am about to do the control runs install and the retractable tail wheel. I haven been able to do any on her because i'm getting ready for the 4th annual S&B models electric fly-in here in Brissy.

In Melbourne i used to be in the KDMAS club in Keilor. I flew once or twice at your culb with Rick Busuttil, and with Justin Church? from memory. Help me set-up my Raptor 50. Here in Brisbane i'm in Pine Rivers Aeronautical Model Society (PRAMS)

What cockpit did you get? I have been seaching all over the net looking for something that would fit to no avail.... And that static prop would be handy to make a copy of because it's no longer available. I have the same gold edition kit with the B conversion.

I also hope to go with the O.S. 1.20 FS pumper but we'll see how the funds are going when it comes time to order it. I have an O.S. 91FX here already if all else fails.

RCMustang: She sure is beautiful...

Thanks

Hey Shafs,

THe world sure does seem smaller..... That a great looking chopper you got there, and that Mustang..... Awsome. I which i could Justin to set-up my chopper again, because i change t/x's and lost the set-up.

From what i can tell from the pic's, you would have to do some serious mods to get the TF kit to that A-36 apache version, including the removal/reduction in the change in leading edge angle at the root of the wing, inner gear doors, etc...

I guess you also got a pretty good deal off ebay? I got mine at almost half the LHS prices! I just found that the scale static prop is still available at about $35AUD.... I have looked everywhere on the net for the royal cockpit, but no luck so far.

Thanks

Hey Shafs,

I aligned my T/E so that they meet in the center, and that way the excess is on the outboard ribs and just sanded off. If you look carefully as pic 15 you will see the excess hanging off the end of rib 6. There was no real crushing of the balsa to speak of on mine.

I was looking around the net again for the royal cockpit kit and came across the ebay item you mush have bought. you did get a good deal!!!

This is great that there is someone else building the "b". The electric airshow is now a week away and i'm gonna be "modeled out" if that's possible so i'm going to need some encoragement to keep building.

thanks

Hey Shafs, welcome to the thread.

Hey Asphalt,

Any updates?? Surely you've had her up for the maiden flight. I'm still trying to get my pull-pull system together. it's not as easy as thought. I gotta get some servos in to see if everything fits o.k.

Was that the p/n I-127 for the Top Flite that you ordered? I'd be interested in your opinion of it when you get it.

Seems like I have always had a TF P-51! I'm still flying the one I built in 1997! I used to fly the old Red Box P-51 converted to the D and painted in Miss America markings, that was in 1984. Anyway, I make a reproduction of the Royal cockpit kit. It's not a super scale thing but it looks nice when painted up and installed. I mounded the servos for the rudder and elevator behind the cockpit in my TF P-51B. I also make the drop tanks and a 1,000lb bomb. I drop these from my plane, the drop tanks look pretty cool when they fall.

Pictures are of the tank I make, my plane as it was new and how it looks today. I know I really need to get some struts for it, but it just keeps flying!

Hey dionysusbacchus,

How did you find the CoG with the servos behind the cockpit? I was thinking of installing mine forward of the cockpit and using sullivan golden rods to actuate the rudder and elevator, because of the tail heavy warnings people have posted here.

Your p-51 looks great! Those scale props are a must for the static photo's aren't they. Really makes the model look awsome.

I really like the look of your drop tanks. What are the chances of getting a set of those for my girl???? Out of interest, what bomb drop mechanism do you use? I have the one available from Tower Hobbies, and use it on my P-38, but have just got some from Hobby Lobby that can with bomb for the same price as Tower's mechanism alone.

thanks
