Tho best way that I can think is to use something that will hold the doors open(spring, thin metal?). As the tailwheel retracts, I might put something on the ends where the cables are to pull it closed.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Hey Guys,
I want to let you know that I am finally making headway with the retract setup and will be sheeting tonight, bar any imperfections i find in the prep. Hope to post some pics tomorrow or over the weekend. For grins and awe, I have decided to post a quick picture of why I have been getting so much done on my model.

Hey, Zope and guys. Love this 1/6.8 Mustang thread.
I've got one on order, now. Tower is out of stock at the moment, so it'll be awhile.
I'm going to use the Robart 622 1/6 scale mains (with the Sierra cams) and an OS 120AX propped for 100mph +. (15x12) I've scratch built and crashed quite a number of smaller Mustangs and have managed to learn this lesson: with P-51s, speed is your friend. Every time I got in trouble, it was due to insufficient ground speed during wind shear conditions.
I'm going to use 332nd FG colors like Jack Erickson has on the full scale bird he keeps at the Tillamook, OR museum. I really like the gray, something different from the typical build.
Hope you guys all had a nice Christmas, and Happy New Year.
We've been snowless here in Cadillac, MI until the last couple days, but once it's built up, the skis go on the Ugly Stick and I'm flyin.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Well I got the main skins on tonight. Man that was not fun. It felt like i needed atleast 6 more arms to get it done right and easily. Anyhow, I am happy with the result and will get all the areas that the main skin doesn't cover tomorrow. Then comes the filling and sanding for all of the imperfections. I hate that part. Anyhow, I hope to get some pictures up soon, but I may lower the resolution so you cant see where my dog stepped on the sheeting, the blood from another cut from the xacto, and the list goes on. At least shes once again moving in the right direction, and really everything else from here on out is smooth sailing (atleast thats the plan). Have a happy new years everyone!

Beautiful P51. Was supposed to go snowboarding today, but I slept in. I guess I can work on the p51 and get the wing mounted to the fuse. Hope all is well with everyone else.

Well, Wing framed up and waiting for retracts. Has anyone used the Robart 606 model? My local hobby shop has a set and I'm tempted to buy them. They are a little more heavy duty than the recommended gear but I didnt know if they would be too much.
By the way......still mulling over the electric option.........maybe by the time I'm ready to commit.....those A123 cells will come down in price!

I may be mistaken but the only difference between the recommended is that it is only an 85 degree retract.
I am using the 551rs and while they are ultra duty, you'll have not a fun time getting the retract to fit in the wing when retracted as it won't be below the sheeting. You'll be removing alot of material. Also if you tilt the 90 degree retract so that it is straight up and down when extended, this will place the wheel further into the wheel well. How i know this? I am having to go with super skinny tires for my wheels to fit in the wing with inner doors. Let me know if you have questions, I'll try to answer. The whole retract fitting thing is actually what has held up my build all this time.

Zope:
You're right about the difficulty of fitting retracts. I've never done it before, so I'm going to build a mockup, one side only wing center section so I can do a "trial run" and get everything right before I actually start the airplane. I'll post pix of it as I go. Problem now, is the delivery date for the kit keeps changing. Early Jan, now.
The thing I like about the Robart 622s is you can change the cam to have either 85 or 90 degrees retraction.

Yeah, your right, the 606's are the same version only 85 degree. Now for the $64000 question.........I thought I had seen somewhere else in the tread where some fellows are using 85 degree retracts, why is that? Do they extend extend (or retract) in a more scale position or do the enhance the ground handling? Or as you may have guessed regarding my fixation with the 606's....I already bought some and hope they dont look too goofy canted inwards a little bit.

no you'll be fine. i have the 85 degree retracts as well. the wing has a bunch of dihedral and this is why people use the 85 degree. If the retract is installed parallel to the wing when it is extended the retract will be perpendicular to the ground rather than strattled with the 90 degree retracts.

Thanks Zope! I was a little worried there till I started going back through the tread. Hopefully gonna start back on the Mustang shortly. I got side tracked with my new Christmas present.......one of the new Hanger 9 Sopwith Camels. Anyway....thanks for the tread!

I built them by putting a notch in the ribs and then soldering them with another rod to create the connector where the flap servo
connects
