Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
The only way that your crash happened is because of poor building or craftmanship
I have used this setup in 2 other 60 size planes and not had any problems
Also what was your control throw. As I have tested this you wont need much to get good preformance
If you flew it balls to the walls, then I would expect it to fail
What might be a better setup is to mount some kind of plate just above the assy to keep it from coming off
I also have this setup in an UltraSport 60 and have flown this ship for two years with no problems

Sabre,
If you are talking about the aileron coupler/ball link set up for a single servo aileron control, the nylon coupler will and has flexed and come off the ball link in higher preformance planes like the P-51. The TF P-51 1/7th GE is too large a plane to use this linkage on in my opinion, especially when using larger engines. It does not take much pressure to "snap" the coupler on or off the ball link. It might be ok for smaller P-51s (.40 size) or a 1/5th size "Cub" type plane flown realisticly, but I prefer the 2 servo setup, I feel it is less complicated to do and a stronger linkage. In the past with a single sevro setup, before the handy-dandy double ended coupler, I always used a wheel on the servo and the control rods had "Z" bends into adjacent holes, no way for the linkage to fail.

Mikemedic & Mustang Fever,
How did I miss that. Wow, it looks really good. It is on page 32 of this thread, posted by Cpig, however, most of the pics are gone. Thanks so much, I might try it.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
I have seen two sizes of ball links and this setup is very hard to get off
I think that if you put it on and off enough times it will wear and fail
The key to this setup is to only put it on when your done with everything else so that you get a tight fit
I have found that there is a smaller ball end and it slips out easy when you put it on so you have to make sure you have the
right size too

Don't worry guys I figured out they were shear webbing...... has this happened to anyone else? using parts for parts and then realising they are meant for other parts lol

NEVERLAND Did the samething with wing spars used one for stab TE. Found my oops when I started the rudder. I could only find one
rudder LE, only one was laser cut. Found the stab TE during my search felt really dumb. learn as I go. Like a few have said here you have to read way ahead. The plans are not for first timers like me. LOTS OF HELP HERE THOUGH.

Yee who sits on the couch makes no mistakes! A mistake is but yet another opportunity to gain more knowledge when you’ve learned not to repeat it.

LOL, At one time or another, I think we've all been there. As for me, I like to mix up parts often so I dont forget how it feels.

My appologies for being lazy but how did you guy's mount the aileron servo's? I am at the point of the build to install them now. I was wondering if there were any pic's? I am doing the two servo mount. Thanks in advance.

I havent mounted mine yet, but plan on mounting them in the same fashon as the flap servos. There are some pics on page 14 by Asphalt, AKA Sticktickler.

I'm to that point also. but had a different question about the flap servos. I see some have gone with a single servo and how they set it up but not how they will connect to the flaps?

Buck:
Luckily I saved the pics of how this guy did his. Can't remember who it was, but it's slick.
He evidently ran the rod from the servo forward to a sort of "torque rod" for the flaps, but the ends of the torque rod go DOWN, so I think he put horns on the ends of them so he could run pushrods rearward to the flap horns.
Hope this helps.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Back on pg. 41 of this thread Flying Beagle did a lot of work and compiled a list of the different retracts people have used for this kit. I know the retract issue is a huge bag of worms and I don't intend to reopen a big debate, but was interested in getting feedback from those of you who've used the CJM retracts. According to Beagle's research, most people have opted for the CJM gear and I am seriously looking at them for my P-51. However, I've seen some bad reporting here on RCU in various other threads about them and have some doubts now. Here is a whole thread dedicated to bashing them:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3977263/tm.htm
I think those guys are complaining about the bigger sets that go with 1/4 and 1/5 size planes. How are the CJM gear for these 1/7 size planes...are there many problems with gear bending or breaking, etc? These are the set I am closely considering to use with 4" Robart scale tires:

Thanks,
Tim

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Here are my pics. Cosmetically I am finished, but I am still putting in all of the hardware. Hopefully I will have the maiden by months end. I am running a YS 91AC, Century jet retracts (main and tail retracts), PCM receiver, futaba and Hitec servos (9 total). I saw the thread that dicusses the "t" ball aileron joint. I went with Horizon hobbies ball joint which looks to have a little more meat to it.
I will keep everyone posted.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Tim,
The tail wheel is a mechanical steering century jet retract. It can also be pneumatic with a small piston. Main gears are Century jet. Tell them you need the Top Flite Gold Edition 1/7 scale P-51 retract and they will hook you up. I had to replace one of the brass barbs, to which they replaced it for free. If you need assistance, ask for Charles, he is great.
