I used 3/8" thick x 3" wide balsa and cut out the shape shown below. I basically traced around a portion of one of the wing ribs that I didn't use, but I extended it so it would end at the tip of the aileron.

Here's a couple of pics of my 4 star 60 arf. I added a balsa cowl, mounted the engine horizontal with a pitts style muffler, used a sullivan tailwheel and some triangle stock to reinforce the tail. I like those wingtips that kerrydel built, hum, another mod in the works?

Nice bird, JT! I like the cowled nose.
I am going to get a fiberglass cowl from Fiberglass Specialties for mine. Yes, I know I said !QUOT!I'm going to build it stock,!QUOT! but I just can't resist the finished look a cowl gives...and since the cowl is made specifically for the Four Star 60, it shouldn't be too much of a much. A skilled local builder has offered to help, too, so I'm a bit braver now...but not a lot!
Love the wingtips, too. Once again it adds a finished look.

Its been some time since the last post in this forum, but I thought I'd include some pictures of my recently completed 4*60. Before I started building I looked at a lot of old posts getting ideas on how I wanted to modify my 4*. I haven't flown it yet, so I can't say how good she flys, but I'm proud of how it looks on the ground. No new/original mods were done, but I tried to do as much as possible to make it not look like the stock 4*. (cowl, clipped wing, wing tips, sheeted turtle deck, cockpit dash, flaps, and fuel tank hatch)

Hey,
I am looking at all the modifications that you guys are saying about the four star 60, or 120. I have a Four Star .40 ARF brand new in box, and I wanted to make more of a faster, sporter plane for my brother. What you recommend to do?

I built a 4*60 with flaperons. I didn't need to do any mods to the airframe. The kit starts out with seperate servo bays for each aileron. The only thing I had to do was not use a Y-harness and connect one aileron servo to an AUX position on my reciever. The plane really flys great!
For landing I rarely use flaps because the plane just gets too slow for me. A little wind and the plane is off course for landing.
I use a OS .70 and that's plenty of power, the plane is a little slow though. Takeoff roll is about 10-15 feet without flaps, and with flaps it's about 4-5 feet. I have plenty of power for climbing and manuevers. I am at sea level, though, so if your at a higher altitude you might need the bigger engine.
I built mine stock (except for the flaperons). I have no complaints about the roll rate. I probably will extend the rudder in the future because it doesn't have as much affect on yaw as I would like.

I'm adding some more info to this post because I've recently received a couple of questions about my wing tips. I simply removed one wing bay and then added the tip on. It was 3/8" thick balsa, so I just glued it on. I figured that the Monokote would keep it all together.
Below is a could ideas on how you could use thinner stock and add some support/stiffeners.

Has anyone tried this with no dihedral in the wing? A buddy did it too a PT40 trainer and it flies awesome, not like a trainer especially on landings. Does still float nice though. Was just wondering if it would give it a little more speed and aerobatic ability? I know it's not a 3D plane, just want to try to increase roll rates and that sort of stuff. Have already done the wing mods and I do beef everything up while building so i can push them harder than normal. I also use spruce stringers on the turtle deck before sheeting. The current one is right at 8lbs dry after the mods.

my cousin that is 84, and has been building sence he was in dipers, made one 4 star 60 with a cavan top-wing, and then a 4 star coupe. I'm going to make a 4 star bi-plane out of mine.

If you don't use the quick reply at the bottom of the thread, but hit the reply icon, there is a way to load photos at the bottom of the page. Your other alternative is to use off site photo storage like putfile.com. They will usually give you code that you can cut and past into your reply. When I use putfile , I do have to modify the code slightly to get it to work here though.

your stick stick looks like a tango 40 that I have. I'm building a 60 4 star with a top wing and using a 40 size tiger 2 wing on the bottom for a bi plane, and going with a 4 stroke 70 os for power.
