Elevator servos; external or internal?

A question for the experts out there; to help balance my plane (CG Extra) I was planning to mount the elevator servos in the rear of the fus. I have never done this but have seen it many times.
My question is; why are the servos always mounted (external) vertically and not horizontally? I was also considering mounting the servos inside the fus. with an access panel and mounting the servos in a normal orientation with the arm protruding horizontally outside thru a "slot" in the fus. (like a aileron servo mount) Is this possible? I have never seen this configuration.

I'm not expert but I've mounted a couple of servos 'back there' and yes, they can be mounted in any orientation you desire - just be careful they don't bump into each other back there as the space gets pretty crowded near the tail.
I've also mounted the rudder servo extending outside along the bottom of the plane! A man's gotta do what he's gotta do

Recently mounted an elevator servo midway in tail section (location for balance)-used a piece of brass for elevator horn soldered to the elevator joiner rod-used a short pushrod and all of the hookups are hidden. Never did like to have servos hanging outside-

Here is how I did it, I put a 150 in mine so I had to move mine, I took one of the punchouts from the bottom of the fuse and used it for a hatch and mounted a servo tray in the rear of the fuse, Didn't need any nose weight added just had to move the battery to the rear of the wing sattle.

Thanks for the replies.
I have come across yours before Dauntae (searching for CG Extras) and have seriously considered this application. It looks as if the push rods cross each each on there way out. So the servo moves the opposite elevator?
Any comments on the aileron type application where the horn would extend out a slot on the fus. side?

Yes the do cross but causes no problems, It worked out that they exit the fuse right where the factory exit slots are so they are crossed. Actually I think your idea would work also but you would have to get creative with the servo mounts. I'm using Hitec HS475 servos for the elevator (60 ounces each) Rather too much than too little. What setup are you using in yours? Mine came out a little on the heavy side with all the extra stuff and my kit had some strangely heavy wood also but at just over 10lbs ready to fly it has no bad habit's and is VERY predictable on the stalls, You can almost see them coming and it stalls at a surprisingly slow speed too. One other thing I would suggest is to laterally balance the plane too, I'm not aware of any issues with this plane dropping a wingtip but mine never drops one wing before the other unless I want it too for a spin. This is the best flying plane I've yet to own. Keep us posted on yours and post some pics of the servo setup, Might be a idea I'll use in another build.

Thanks, I will take some shots and post when I get the servos mounted. I'm using Futaba 3010, 70 oz torque. With that torque I could probably get away with one, we'll see. I'm putting a 108 up front so I'm guess total wt. of 9 lbs. Will balance laterally for sure because the 108 is mounted 90 degrees and has a lot of mass hanging to one side.
