Here is tonights installment. I finished up the tail feathers. All that was needed for the vertical stab and rudder was to tape them together and sand them to match, a bevel was then sanded on the leading edge of the rudder.

The Horizontal stab and elevator were next. End caps were glued on the horizontal stab, once dried, ther were shaped. The elevator halves were joined with the joiner wire , taped to the horizontal stab and sanded to match. Like the redder, a bevel was sanded on the leading edge for the hingeline.

Here's a pic of the finished tail feathers

I also made cutouts in the fuselage for needle valve and muffler clearance. A hole was cut in the firewall for the fuel tubing to pass through

I started sanding the airframe tonight in preparation for covering. I wont be taking pics of the sanding process as there really is not too much to see....

I'm back on the build! The wing still needs a bit of sanding and filling, but I needed a break from the dust and decided to do some covering. I've got my covering scheme laid out in my head. To me, the airplane looks a little like a homebuilt airplane, so I'm mimicking a couple different schemes I saw at a local airport. Mark, I hope you like how it's turning out so far. In the last 2 pics nothing is glued together yet, it's just dry fitted together for the picture.

He is into Nito Car's, he is in the Air Force, and they have a place where they go race them at over there!! You take care, and the plane is looking great !!

Been away for a bit! I had to finish up my winter build and get that sucker in the air! My winter build was Sig Hog Bipe, I'll get some pics up of it later. Back to the mid star. I glued the vertical stab to the horizontal stab and hinged the elevators. I find it's easier to do this while the parts are still loose from the fuselage. Next I used some Sig Dope to fuel proof the engine compartment. Once that was dry I glued the stab assembly to the fuse with epoxy. The next pic shows the rudder hinged.

Next I drilled and tapped the engine mounts to accept the Magnum .46 Mark has chosen for this plane. The next pic is of the plane as it sits right now, I like to take a break from covering here and there so that explains why the wing is still bare. Also, Mark, I wanted to show you how the plane looks so far so you can decide if you want the canopy blacked out or left clear, I need to know before I cover the top of the wing. Hope you like it so far.

BTW, I weighed the plane as it sits and it's coming in just a hair over 4 pounds. When it's finished, I shooting for a weight of 5 to 5 1/4 pounds

The fuse is complete. I installed the control horns on the surfacesand made up the control rods. I built a servo tray and installed that in the fuse followed by the servos. I also made the cables for the throttle and nose gear steering. You can see the little support brackets I make to supportthe cables. They are not pretty, butthey work and look a lot better than scrap chunks of balsa glued to the fuse sides. THe fuel tank was assembled and installed in the tank compartment. Mark, the servos you gave me did not have set screws for the servo arm, you'll need to pick some of those up. Also, I am not attaching the control rods to the servos. You'll need to attach them how you wish. (z-bends, ez connectors, solder clevis etc). You'll need to support the end of the control rods once you choose your attachment method. Finally, you'll need to install your switch/battery and receiver

The canopy is completed! I installed the 4-40 threaded insert for the caompy hold down into the basswood block, next pic is the canopy installed on the plane. I should have the wing covered by monday evening. All that is left to do then is to cover and hinge the ailerons and stick a aileron servo in her and we'll be set

It sure is looking great, maybe we will be able to fly it next weekend, after the races !! That would be cool !! I did my first solo the other day, I am thinking it was WED. it was so nice out with no wind !! then I ended up going solo 2 more times taking off and landing !!! It felt so good after I was able to do it !! also I did it in front of the safty and trainer, Bob and George. watched me and graded me on my flying !! Hey Sat. that fly for fun they had !! One of the Big Boy's came out to the field, he was hotdoging pretty good, and he lost it and it went down in the corn field !! it was a bad crash, and it was new and he had about $2300 in it !! I bet he was sick !!

Have a good weekend !!

Later
Mark

CONGRATULATIONS MARK! It is a great feeling after your first solo! Just keep at it and soon you'll be boaring holes in the sky like nobody's business. If you want to fly it Sat. I'll need to get it too you this week sometime as you'll still have a bit of wour to do on it, but nothing that will take you more than an afternoon to do. I'll see where I'm at after the weekend, Maybe I can get it to you early this week.
