I have an older Instruction manual and the throws are as follows:
Elevator-3/4" up & down
, Rudder- 1' right & left
Ailerons-3/8" right & left
No CG point on the plans...says to Balance each plane indiviually ! (??)
My Hog flew CG'd at the spar, or a tad (1/2") behind.

I need a template to cut out a new windshield as I have lost mine. Does anyone have a template for one?

started the hog about a month ago, and am up to covering.

Going electric, so have a hatch on top, and upper front section filled in, underside open.

I have one 20 yrs old still good to go. Taildragger, Saito 91, took most all dihedral out of wings, enlarged elevators & rudder about 35% and made them rounded. everybody always asks "what plane is that?"

Found this thread awhile ago, have been enjoying it. Now I figure I'll add my HOG to the collection.
OS .91FS As you can see I did mount the LG up front (clearance for the prop was the reason) I mounted it with rubber bands (old school method) and it has gone a full season with nearly 100 landings with NO troubles! I do replace the bands when they get slack.
All Mono-kote covering. The windscreen is the GP Stearman ARF unit. The pilot is a dead ringer for the one holding the radio (me).



The checkerboard pattern is hand cut squares. The LG and wheels are "old style" which sort of goes with the age of the Astro Hog vintage. She fly's like a dream!

c of g was spot on as planned. Redback 91 installed, with 6s 500 lipo. Wattmeter showing 1250 watts pulling 55 amps with a 15 x 8 prop. Havent weighed it, but doesnt seem heavy. May swap out for a 61 sized motor if it is overpowered, and use the 91 for a hog bipe that is on the building board. Underneath of wing is white for orientation.
Maybe at the field next week?

Broken Wings, Did you get those wheels from a stroller? I have some like that on my Senior Telemaster!
Good use for them, it gets the fuselage up a little higher.

well, maiden was mixed.

plane flew well, but roll rate was very slow.
turned left under power, glided straight, so some right thrust was required.
once trimmed, flew straight, but very 'mushy' in recovery from manouvres. Again, could be some learning and adjustment required from pilot!
cuban eights fine, loops fine, inverted ok, rolls slow and 'mushy', but that could have been the pilot.
landing approaches straight and fuss free. Glide easy to manage.
on third battery, though, managed to stall it, drop a wing and it now needs a new nose.

never mind, a few hours work will see it back in the air.
91 sized electric seemed about right. Takeoffs at about 70% throttle. Plenty in reserve, vertical performance fine

Congratulations on the maiden flight! Thanks especially for the information about the power performance. I had a glow powered Hog years ago and was wondering how it would fly with electric power.

Where are you guys buying these Hog Kits? Tower doesn't carry them anymore and neither does Horizon, Hobby King or Hobby People! I've got a spare Saito 82 that I want to put on the Hog and really enjoy kit building. Just finished a 60 size Kaos with a OS 91 four stoke on it.

Thanks, guys for the info, however, I tried to order directly from Sig yesterday and they told me they were OUT of stock and wouldn't have them in for a few months. I guess I can watch Ebay and other sites to see if one comes available before then.

I finally found a kit and low and behold it was at my local hobby shop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm building the left wing now and am wondering if the "angle for the dihedral" will be to MUCH. What have you used for your hogs and how did they fly? The plans call for 6 degrees. What does that get you in inches at the wing tip? What is your best recommendation? I would appreciate any info you guys could give me!

I built it just as plans show with a few exceptions. I moved the landing gear and secured them as seen in my pictures a few posts up. Don't bother messing with the dihedral, the plane is too classic for 3D so no need for flattening it.

Thanks, Red_Jeepster, I did read your posts, but did wonder if anyone had any success with moving the dihedral. On other RCU forums for the Hog, they state that about half of the dihedral gave them a better flying plane. I just wondered if anyone on this forum had the same experience as I am at the point of setting the W1 rib angle. I don't do 3D and just want a very acrobatic plane, i.e., loops, spins, knife edge,inverted, etc., the ususal stuff. Just gathering information as I have been flying RC for over 30 yrs. I presently fly the KOAS and really enjoy these type of older acrobatic models. I also intend to make mine a taildragger and contacted Sig for the kit whicn is $6.99 with a reduced shipping charge of $4.99.

I believe Sig uses half of the original dihedral, which still leaves quite a bit. To me the point of building old kits is for the different look and different flying qualities. The Hogs I've seen with more dihedral taken out really don't look like Hogs anymore, and so the way I see it, what's the point? I think Sig got a nice compromise that still looks really good. I would just go with that.

Compared to a Kaos, the Astro Hog is a much earlier design, and my inclination is to treat it as such rather than try too hard to make it into something it wasn't. If I want a Kaos I'll build a Kaos. But it's a hobby; I'm only giving you my own point of view. Enjoy whatever you decide!

Again, I appreciate the views on dihedral expressed. I do want a very acrobatic Hog so I'm considering using just slightly less than the 6 degrees that Sig recommmends. I hope that it will be "less self-corrective" so to speak and be more precise with rolls, etc. Thanks for the input.

I finished a "new" Hog last year and It has the stock dihedral.
I think you are right that it might fly a bit more precise with less dihedral, but I think it might lose it's old time charm.
So far my Hog has done everything I've asked of it. I think due to it's shear size, it will never be a performer like a smaller trimmer plane.

I'm putting in about 4 degrees of dihedral to make it fly a little better. Your Hog looks GREAT pd1 (very nice pics)! Hope mine turns out that nice as I am planning on finishing it in the PT-19 color scheme. Good job and a very nice consise setup for your servos!
Looks like you finished a little nose heavy is that why the battery is behind the CG? What engine are you using as I'm planning on the Saito 82?

It came out a bit nose heavy with the electric motor and large 6 cell battery pack. Moving the flight battery a bit to the rear cured it.
I also lengthened the main gear legs a little too. I could have used a smaller electric motor, but that's what I had in the drawer. The electric power is a lot more than my last Hog had. That had a K&B 45 green head.

Interesting that you went electric as I have just started with an Eflite Pulse XT 25e. Like you said, you can just adjust the CG by moving the battery! I think my Hog will be slightly nose heavy too as I am building it as a taildragger.
I usually build a little compartment near the tail wheel for weight and it works out great. My Saito 82 uses a 13 x 8 prop and I should have plenty of ground clearance so I intend to use the Sig taildragger wire gear set. I'm taking my time with
this kit and am still working on the wing. Looking forward to flying it however as everyone seems to really enjoy the Hog.

A 13x8 will have plenty of ground clearance. Mine is using a 16x10, needed a bit more clearance.
