Would you put landing gear on the fuselage so that handling the wing would be easier? I am ready to install the gear in the wing when one of the guys at the field showed up with a hog and said he changed the gear to the fuz and it handled just as well and thought he had less of a noseover chance.

For heaven's sake... Build the Hog like it was meant to be !! Landing gear in the WING !! Not a trike and NOT with a dorky metal gear hung under the fuse !! It wll not nose over if you taxi it like a real tail dragger... with the stick in your crotch! Hold a little back(UP) stick while taxiing to keep the tail down and start releasing the stick when she's up on the mains and she'll take herself off !

I have planned to mod this landing gear to the front from the begining, as I saw a few successful ones on the internet. I chose this alternative because I know I will mess up the moment I start bending the 5/32" music wire.

Hi Ugo, I know I may not be doing justice to the Astro Hog with such modifications, but I chose the lazy way out..LOL!
I had a PT-19 before, holding up elevator is a must. Its not the nosesing-over that I am avoiding, its the bending of the music wire.

Yes, I have seen your built on the Hog in your avatar. You used a number on the wing...was it for racing? Fantastic work!!

Thanks Charlie, I have those 645's salvaged from a 40cc gasser Extra and thought that I should not spend another cent for servos but channel them to getting a new Saito82...

I have an OS 91 Surpass in my plane and IMHO it is not overpowered at all.
You will like the way the 82 flies the plane

I think a 60 class 2 stroke engine will work fine on this plane.
This airframe will handle a lot of different engines, don't be afraid of power, just use it wisely.

Gee thanks! I like it. I was about to consider the original design printed on the box.

The wing disappears into the sky when I am landing, not a good color scheme.
The top and bottom of the wing are the same, hard to tell top from bottom, not a good color scheme.

OK one last post, I personally like the gear mounted in front of the wing, I don't like fixing broken ribs caused by less than perfect landings.
Break out the 220 grit sand paper and prep that metal gear, then paint it (Rustoleum will do nicely and if you are worried about matching colors go with black), while you are at it paint the wheel hubs the same color too unless you picked black.

I am looking at servos and I was wondering what size I will need. I have some used ones that are in a much smaller plane, Has a .15 engine and 32" wingspan, but I think with all the time I have invested I should purchase new stuff. Also, I have already planked the wings and have the control arms epoxied to the ailerons so I would like to put a servo for each aileron in the center area of the wing where the plan calls for servo install. Is there enough room? Is there a small servo that will be acceptable? I will be using a jr radio, do I have to get jr servos?
Thanks for your help

(Nothing technical but feels good).I think any 3kg servo would suffice for this plane. I guess someone already done this mod in the center of the wing to accommodate 2 Aile servos.
Hitec servos or JR servos, really depends on your budget and future plan for it. I am using JR too but all my servos are Hitec with JR leads.

Trial fitting and positioning of the fuel tank. I would be glueing on sponge lining around the walls later so that the tank sits snugly.
Do you guys spread finishing resin around the fuel tank hull for fuel proofing or paint?

I use epoxy to fuel proof, thin it with some alcohol.
If you put finishing resin (a polyester / fiberglass resin product) over epoxy it may not harden correctly.

It looks like you are doing a great job with your build.
Thanks for taking the time to post pictures and comments.
I have an Astro Hog on the way from Tower right now, when I saw limited quantities on this kit I decided to get one to have on hand.
Right after I built my Super Sportster 60, that kit was discontinued. I still have it but when it reaches it expiration date I won't be able to replace it. That is a shame too since it is a reaaly nice flying plane.
I like the Astro Hog so much I don't want to risk this kit being discontinued too.

Hey guys, just wanted to move the thread back up front so that maybe we can get more to chime in. Mechplas must be taking a break and I just started my hog and have almost caught up with where he was on his last post. I screwed up a couple of times and have to back up some for my mods, etc. since the plans don't warn you about which order everything must go. That's what makes it fun though. Keep the posts coming. I can use the tips. And I have started on fuse not the wing. That's where I'm up with him.

Hi Cubfloater, I took it slow for a few days as I was down with a cold. Nevertheless, I managed to do some work on the front gear mounts. I used four pieces of 5mm blind nuts and Nylon screws to fastened the aluminium gear brackets.
