the old st 61 has a deep roar to it, not the high pitched whine like the newer motors. i have
never had a 4 stroke, all of them are 2 strokes. i want this plane to be as close to my first one
as possible. besides in the last 6 years i have sunk a boat load of money in 1/8 scale buggies.
i dont want to stir the wife up no more than i have to!

Ok..sounds like you have a diplomatic plan. Better stick to it, otherwise you will hear another high pitch sound in the house.

How's the Hog coming along?

Hello all:
This is my first attempt to post a picuture I hope it works. Here's a shot of my Hog, got it finished late in the fall and haven't had the maiden flight yet. Weather here in Indiana HORRIBLE we are enduring 15"+ of snow with high winds second day of snow emergency. Getting a lot of reorganizing of my build shop and trailer done.
Built the hog with diehedral called for in the plans. One servo per aileron and also flaps. Just for kicks I animated the pilots head with a servo, I can switch it to follow the rudder or switch it to a slider on my EVO , kids love it.
OS 70 Surpass II
Wheel pants by Fiberglass Specialities.
Monokote with Monokote trim had cut.
Futaba on board. EVO for transmitter.
Thanks Kev.
Pardon my spelling I looked everywhere for spell check, guess I missed it somewhere. Boy have I gotten spoiled.

WoW!! nice scheme. I noticed the muffler pointing towards the LE? Will that get goo underneath the wing too?

the wings are ready to be joined together. i have already sanded and shaped them. it seems the older
i get the more attention i pay to detail. if im gonna do it i might as well do it right. i just finished building
a pete and poke for a friend, he bought me the hog in exchange. i will work on it every night just taking
my time. its still easier than building my sailaires, they were time consuming.

no not exactly. i was flying at work one day and i made my turn near my plant infront of the silo,
only problem was i was closer to it than i thought. i caught the top of it, at half throttle, and little
pieces fell to the ground for what seemed like 5 minutes. i was mad at myself for weeks. but the
motor survived the hit, still runs great for a 15 year old motor!

Not real sure about the muffler angle, I figure it will get the goo everywhere anyhow I'd just like to keep it off of Joe Pilot and the cockpit that's where my switches, charge jacks, & voltwatch are.
Thanks Kev

Hi there, i also have a astro hog kit i am just getting ready to build. I am building it as a tail dragger too. I got all the items i needed to fininish it before i started so i had no hold ups in the middle of building. I have a asp 91 2 stroke i plan on putting on it and i have a met green with white color schem for it. like on the box. I have a sop. pup almost built then when both of these are done i have a goldberg super chipmunk and a 1/4 scale top flite corsair i want to build into a show bird. Also Jack Staford alonII aro coup. As you seee i love building also. I have a 1/4 scale flybaby to rebuild the wing on. I collected about 4 crashed birds last summer i would like to rebuild also. I am very interested in watching this thread and seeing your birds when there done..

I have only a switch at the cockpit, now with a pilot doll, I may want to install the plastic windshield. The original was damaged, so now I am thinking, if I buy a think acrylic to do the windshield, how am I going to mount it?

I also damaged the plastic sent with the kit. I used Pactra paints for R/C car bodies silver and black and painted an aluminum looking lower frame with black to simulate rubber then simply screwed 2 servo screws on each lower side and put some lite ply inside so the screw had more to bite into than just balsa. I thought I had a picture I'll have to snap one after supper and post it.

I have made three astro hogs and one hog pipe. They are great planes to build and fly. I consider Sig kits the best on the market in terms of quality, plans, and instructions.
A recommendation I would give you is to cover the wing tips with 1/16 to 1/32" balsa. Also, put foam in the tips to give the balsa support. I have done this on every hog I have built. This technique has protected the wings from minor damage and really doesn't add much weight. It also makes the wing look better.

I might do that in the next, if I ever build another..
Thanks for the tip.

I had four beautiful flights on mine today. Great weather, blue sky and white clouds, the orange really stands out...
I was running at 8000rpm on the Saito 91 with a lot of smoke with 20% nitro. I love this plane, its looks retro too....

Mechplas,
I used to have a Master Airscrew 14x6 on my Hog. I see from the pix that you have a Master Airscrew. I switched to APC, and even though it is not nearly as attractive, the difference in power made it worth it.

I had a very deep cut from an APC blade tip before, since then, I refrained from using APC props.
sigh..... Maybe I should give it a try again after staying away for so many years.

Thanks for the pic. I get the idea. To date, I am still flying without the windshield. OMG.

mechplas,
Your Hog does look real good, nice job, if it is not already your favorite plane give it a little time because it will grow on you.
I just flew mine again Wednesday and it really is a sweet plane, easily my favorite bird in the flock.
The aileron throw on mine is maxed out and it does very graceful axial rolls, when the ailerons were set to the recommended deflection the roll rate was lacking for me. It will knife-edge with the right wing up at about 3/4 throttle, for some reason I cannot really do it with the left wing up, there is plenty of rudder but I can't hold it on line.
Just out of curosity what kind of RPM are you getting on your Saito 82 ?
I am not really interested in the peak RPM the sustained RPM you set to fly is what is important.
My numbers are OS 91 Surpass with 14x6 APC on 15% and set the RPM to 10K for flying.
