Good combination ... but wish I had at least a 91 ...
Saito 80 with 14x6 provides plenty of vertical ... but not enough to knife edge loop of hover for any length of time ...
Still will do most every thing else ...
You will love it ... best chipy I have owned yet
Sure beat those ARFs!
Lots of Pictures ...

Not your conventional "ART SCHOLL" look ... I had to be different!

You will LOVE your Chippy, but I would consider a bigger engine. I pulled the tired Saito .91 out of mine last year and treated it to a a brand new Saito 100 . WOW. From me, this is purrrfect power . I now run 30% nitro heli fuel through it. Man oh man, it performs. This is more than just an "entry level aerobat" for me, it is my primary sport plane.
On our short grass field I was ALWAYS having problems with the wire main landing gear. I took them off, beefed up the fuselage underside just ahead of the wing and installed a set of bowed aluminum gear that I had TnT bend for me. I can put the wire mains back in at any time, but these gear work GREAT.
I too didnt want a cookie-cutter Art Scholl chipmunk, so here is MY covering scheme.

Hey Cheech,
You got a cool looking 'munk there ...
So, can you tell me ... since you are running the saito 100 from the 91 upgrade ...
did you have to make any major mods to the cowl?
buy a new mount or use the same one and redrill it for the 100.
I was going to upgrade from the 80 ... to a 91 just so I could bolt it in with no hassles ...
You say the 91 was still a tad on the light end of the power side ...
I know my 80 works quite well and its not fully broke in ... but I know it will never deliver what I want ...
in any event, I have flown several 60 & 40 size chipys ... and this is the best one in its size ...
and I have been flying since R/C 1980 ...

"did you have to make any major mods to the cowl? "
My 100 is side mounted, so was my 91. The only change was making an access hole on the TOP of the fuselage to provide access to the low speed needle.
"buy a new mount or use the same one and redrill it for the 100?"
I bought a NEW mount that is exactly the same as the old mount. I used the same firewall holes to mount the new mount. I have a bit of right thrust and down thrust shimmed in.

The 91 was plenty of power, but my Saito 91 was old. I kept pushing it too hard and running leaner than I should just to extract best performance. A fresh 91, especially on heli fuel, is probably plenty. I'd do what I did. Get a new mount that will bolt to the firewall with no new drilling.
"You say the 91 was still a tad on the light end of the power side ... "
You get the 100 and it's additional 1/5 HP (if you believe those numbers) for a tiny two ounce weight gain. Instead of spinning the 91's 14x6 or 13x6x10 prop, you can spin a 14x8 or 15x6. I'd say it is worth it.

Just like you, I really like my 'munk. Mine has tons of flying time since it was built in 2000.

Drool ... now if I would stop spending money on EBAY ....
I do have a Golden Knight saito 120 .... humm ... I wonder how much weight I would need to add in the tail? ... nah ... that would be pure insanity!
or would it?

D_Dawg, you have a bunch of nice planes. I'd like to get the Patrick Ultimate, I just don't have the $$ or the time right now. I'd get the ARC and cover it myself, just for something different. An astroturf field would be cool.
Our field is very small, 100x200 patch of grass. But it has pretty big flo over area and it is private.

I fully understand the thing with money ...
And even more about the ARC vs ARF ... if you got to have the same plane as every else ... it should at least be a different color scheme ...
I am hanging on to every dollar to get a Enya 1.55 R to place in the nose of my Citabria pro ...
Why? becuase it will bolt in where my Enya 120 R sits with no modification! ...
It is all a matter of which do I fly more? I could buy that Saito 100 ... but ... I Like my Big One Winged open Cockpit Bipe ...

I have a super chipmunk with a saito 91. i have not flown it yet but i was wondering if 2-56 rod is okay for this plane. Will the retracts be okay and then will th flaps need elevator mixed in?

I just bought a chippy used of a fellow flyer.
what a great plane. this is my first flight with a low wing and everything was smooth as silk.
two flights with two perfect 3 point landings.
jpeters,
I found that when I put the flaps down I needed a touch of down elevator. I suggest you try is out without mixing first to get an idea of how much but its easy to control.
I landed with half flaps both of my flights and its plenty for that plane (im sure its even good no flaps) maybe next week I'll try a full flaps landing and see how slow it will go.
also stalls with full flaps have no tendancy to tip a wing at all... just drop forward slightly.
as you can see im a happy chipmunk owner

just make sure you get some airspeed before lifting off and check its stall characteristics at altitude before you go to land.
Im sure you will be pleased with this plane... im considering buying another as a kit so I can cover it in my own scheme (I soon may have to recover this one anyway, because the cover is starting to show its age.)

My Chipmunk seemed harder to land when I first started flying it a couple years ago. You end up getting comfortable with it very fast. It DOES slow down and has no bad stall characteristics , but it isn't a trainer.
I have inboard flaps on mine. I have a bunch of mixes set up that put the 30 degree down flap onto the 3 position switch on my radio. I have a "flaps down" setting and a "crow/airbrake" setting. In crow, the ailerons come up a little. On BOTH mixes the appropriate amount of elevator is mixed in to counter the changed lift of the wing. Flies GREAT!
