Default LT-40 engine

Hey Club Saito Guys,
I was wondering if a FA-82 would be to much engine for my trusty old LT(kit built)?It has almost no dihedral(3/4"under one wingtip)is a taildragger and has flaps(oversize flaps and ailerons made out of 3"aileron stock).I figure the FA-65 weighs more than FA-82 so I would be saving some weight and gaining some HP.Win win right?
Any advise would helpful.
Thanks. Jim

I had a highly modified LT-40 taildragger with no dihedral that I sold to a friend. He put a OS 70 fs in it and it flew great. Quite lively for a trainer. Not Saito, but a similar set up-hope this helps.

The Saito .82 will be an excellent choice, you'll be at 1/3rd throttle most of the time but fuel lasts forever that way and when you want to hotrod, you can.

BJ, a 12x8 three blade might be worth a look.

At fourstroke and Diesel rpm there is no difference in the performance, I'll run a couple of 12x8 3 blades on my .82 today and give you some numbers.

I've run several engines on my LT-40, and the Saito .50 (yes, a .50) was just about the best. That plane would putt around all day. The .82 is a lot, but that's what the left stick is for. I've often found that more engne (and weight) isn't always better. The .82 is plenty of engine, but it may just add more weight.

It's not like an LT-40 can't handle a couple extra ounces of weight. They float.

Hey Guys

Thanks for all your input I think the 82 will work out fine.I don't think weight will be to much to worry about,the FA-56 that I have in my LT-40 arf weighs 410 grams. The original engine that I had on this plane,a kit built LT-40,was a FA-65 it weighs in at 550 grams,and the FA-82 weighs 462 grams.I don't know why but my LT came out tail heavy,and when I put the 82 on the nose it needed quite a bit of nose weight to balance.I ended putting a 4200mah 4.8v reciever pack in the nose to finally get it to balance.I will probably fly her later this week with the 82 on the nose not much time for flying this weekend(Mom&Mother inlaw day).I'll keep you guys posted again thanks for your help.

hey bj;
.82 will be very nice. i have flown my lt-40 with a .46 2 stroke, an enya .90 4-stroke, and an o.s.7o 4-stroke. after a few hundred flights and a rebuild as a tail dragger, flown with a saito .90 a supertigre .90, both glow and the gas conversion, and now with an os pumped .91 4-stroke. you may notice i favor the 4-strokes, as they match engine torque and prop speed better to the speed of the model. our field altitude is 6002 feet. hope this helps you.
