Default 1st kit questions

I'm looking at purchasing my 1st airplane kit that's not an ARF. I would like to build a Cub with a 80-90" wing span.
Is there a big difference between laser cut and die cut kits?
Who makes the best and most complete kit?

Default Best kit

There is no "best" kit. Some people will choose the ones with the laser cut parts (great fit). Others, like me usually end up with die cut parts, but with great instructions (IE, GP kits). I have heard that the sig kits can be a real bear to build due to some of there poor instructions (Older kits). Some may differ from this idea. I have built a Carl Goldberg Cub and it was easy. I built it when I was 15 so anyone should be able to do it. I have built 4 Great planes kits and all of them were easy to built. In my opinion there instructions are 1st rate. Lots of pictures to guide you and the plans are detailed and accurate.

Here is a link to the GP Cub. They have 3 of em, 20, 40, and a 60 size. http://www.greatplanes.com/airplanes/gpma0160.html Pick the size for you and there should be no problem for a 1st time builder. They also offer on this site the ability to download there manuals so you can see if it will be feasable for you to build.

Good Luck, Phil (Mesa, AZ)

Goldberg (IMHO) has the best 40 size Cub. GP comes in a close second, and I have heard that Sig's 1/5 scale cub is good too.

PS Whichever one you decide on, build the clipped wing version.

Hi SunDevilpilot, hate to tell you but if you ever build a Sig kit you'll find that they have some of the best instructions of anyone.Yes there is a big difference in laser and die cut. The laser is more precise and the fit is almost perfect,on some die cut parts the fit is so bad that the wood needs replacing,or the wood is crushed.THERE ARE GOOD KITS IN EITHER METHOD OF CUTTING,Great Planes,Goldberg,Sig,Balsa USA,there's other good kits as well, but over the years this kits have been the most fun to build and fly.

I agree with the goldberg being a great kit, but it is smaller than you want. I also have the Balsa USA 1/4 scale and it is big and flys so good. I would go that way if you want one that big. My friend has an OS FS 120 in his and it is great. I have a Saito 180 and its better.
