w8ye,

Thanks for your confirmation on the OS 91 Surpass adequacy to fly the Hood 80.......This will be my first option if I decide to put aside the use of the G23.

I just receive a response from Horizon folks who have reps there for the Zenoah engines and posed the question about mounting the G23 without the aluminum backplate and they confirmed it and as you said it was acceptible to monut it that way in you experience......

Removing the backplate when mounting the G23 will also lessen the weight several ounces...I may need the weight back to get the CG correct....I'll tackle that when I complete the frameup and assemble the plane in its bare bones.

Thanks much.

As I said before, my 80 is scaled down from a 99. Mine may have a longer nose for I suspicion that they may have shortened the nose on the kitted 80" ?

My 80 with the OS 91 Surpass II does not have any nose weight. Everything is mounted rather normally with no extra weight anywhere.

don't worry about losing weight in the nose, with a maloney 100 up front mine was nose heavy so much that 2 1200 mah battery packs are mounted in a box aft of the wing trailing edge.

Do I need to measure the distance from the leading edge to the firewall for you?

My 80 measures 6 3/4" from the front of F-2 to the front of the firewall.

I measured my 99 for a matter of record and it was 9 1/4" from the front of F-2 to the front of F-1 so I guess my scratch built 80 does have a shortened nose?

The front of the firewal on my Hood80 is 5 inches from the front of the windshield.

Once I construct all the parts then I will setup the placement of all the internal componets (electrical, servos, tank, etc) and try to balance at the CG without having to add weight (or possibly adding very little if possible).

Correction/update

The front of the firewall F-1 on my Hood80 is 5 inches from the front of the windshield.

Once I construct all the parts then I will setup the placement of all the internal componets (electrical, servos, tank, etc) and try to balance at the CG without having to add weight (or possibly adding very little if possible).

Hello everyone. Cant believe I searched for a plane and found a fresh thread! Seems like discussions I find are always years old. I have destroyed my favorite (Sr. Tele) and have had this Robinhood 80 in the attic for about 25 years. I guess its time to fly her! I did not build this plane but it is well built and I am going over her to get her ready to maiden.

I will try to provide input as well as ask for advise here.

On the firewall discussion, interesting, mine is at 5.5 inches.

I have a few questions also...

Earlier in the thread yall spoke of sheeting in the CS and glassing that section for aerobatic purposes. As I have no plans or anything, would someone expound on that? My wing has 11.5 inches of sheeting in the center but no glass under the covering. Is that wide enough on the sheeting? How nessessary is the glassing? Is that nessessary WITHOUT wing struts? My wing has twin blocks outboard for mounting struts and I intended to use them. I do not have any struts for it so I will have to fabricate them. There used to be (25yrs ago) strut material available but I cant seem to locate any now, which brings about my most important question. What are your ideas on the best way to construct functional struts?

Wing holdown. Mine has one center bolt in the front of the CS. Maybe with the struts its enough? Just doesnt seem right to me on a plane this large...Your thoughts?

Thanks...good to be here....Shane

PS....Its a Maloney 125

Make sure the front and rear wing saddle mounts are better tied to the vertical members on the fuselage sides. I used simple plywood gussets and they worked fine. If the wing bolt holes are in a solid block then convert it to twin nylon bolts front and aft, or use a single metal bolt in a big washer and a T-nut. I have owned three RH80s with nearly every size engine from a .60 to 1.8. Make sure the control surfaces are stiff and have fun.

The single bolt in the front is not good. The wing will want to rock.

Make the struts from Bass Wood or spruce. Use aluminum tabs at the ends to fasten to the wings.

Sounds good and thanks for the quick replies!

Okay, so, no single hold down on front...
Reinforce hold down blocks to vertical structre...
Make struts...guess Ill grind down some hard wood dowel on the ole belt sander...they will certainly be strong!

What about..
Sheeting?
Glassing?

And Kweasel...what do you mean stiff? No slop? tighten the covering super tight?

Thanks guys...Shane

Make sure the grain is straight on what ever wood you sue for the struts.

Mine has no struts and no fiberglass.

It has two nylon bolts at the front and two at the rear.

I have a OS 91 Surpass II engine

It is covered with Solar Tex.

.

Marked and noted

Now the obvious question is how hard would you say you fly it?

Thanks...Shane

Mine flies just like a Piper Cub

The 91FS has plenty of power for it

Landings are not too much float but easy enough to land power off also.

Has a lot of adverse yaw with the ailerons. Put in a little rudder with ailerons

Robinhoods don't need struts, they are exceptionally strong as long as the spars are tied together and good shear webbing is used.
